The funniest question I have ever received was when I told my white co-worker that it was time to retie my hair the weekend coming up. She asked me if I was going to take my hair out to do the retie. I gave her a screwy look and said, "No, all of this is my hair and there is no taking it down. And I don't plan to cut it anytime soon." She was shocked! The whole Office thought my locs were a weave. At that time, my disrespectful microlocks 😁were shoulder length, but now they are waist length and happily growing towards the tailbone.

I can most definitely relate!! I love seeing the look on people’s faces when I tell them my hair is all mine 😂 complete shock and confusion. Keep growing your locs and proving people wrong I’m sure your hair is beautiful!!

I’m only a year in with my journey but I love to watch videos of people far in their journey to gain insights from them. I totally get what you mean by your locs are love! The love and attention you give yourself with the loc maintenance of washing, retwisting, styling, etc. also the love you give yourself to be unapologetically you with your natural strands that grow from your head. The path of least resistance for our hair will always be locs! It took a lot of work to keep my hair detangled. But when I stopped trying to form my hair in a form it didn’t wanna be in, my hair locked right away and is flourishing despite the heat damage on my ends. Locs are just my hairs most natural form. And there’s love in allowing yourself to just BE. We don’t have to completely transform our natural selves to be considered worthy. We are worthy with the hair that grows from us!
My mother also has locs. She actually loc’d her hair first. And me and my mom have always been close but locs of course made up even closer because we have even more in common now. And now my sis has locs. Locs have really opened my eyes to my personal image and my self love. Locs are definitely love. And they are definitely freedom.
Locs and freedom: no ducking and dodging rain, snow, mist, etc. You can wake up and go! You can TRULY “wash and go” instead of “wash and go put leave in conditioner, oil, and gel in your hair section by tiny section for hours” lol. No more product junkie shenanigans. Just need shampoo water and oil. Consistency, no need to think weeks ahead of what style you should get/do on your hair. You can just be you at all times!! Also locs are so versatile if and when you need them to be!! ☮️✌🏾❤

Thank you so much for this comment, I LOVE IT!!! It’s so true, what you said about forming your hair in a form it didn’t want to be in. I feel as though a lot of people have a perception of their hair not being able to grow long, but that’s not the case at all it’s just the hair constantly being forced out of its natural state. And exactly we are beautiful and deserving just as we are, we should never have to go far from our natural selves to feel that way.
It makes me so happy hearing how your relationship with your family has grown because of this journey. I think locs have allowed for my relationship with my mom to deepen as well.
And yesss locs are the literal definition of “wash and go” 😂. One of the things I love is to simply wake up and be, without having to decide how I’m going to beautify myself for the sake of others.
Once again thank you for this comment, you have no idea how happy I was to read it. Sending you much peace and blessings, may your locs continue to grow with love and freedom. ❤️

Your locs are absolutely beautiful! My locs means strength and confidence for me. They’ve been through a lot but are super strong and have given me so much confidence. I love my loc babies…I’m still new only 4.6 years in but I’m still loving the entire journey 😊

Loved hearing about how much your locs mean to you and how they’re sort of an extension of the love you have in yourself and give to others. I don’t have locs, but I’m also trying to be more intentional about embracing my natural hair so I can definitely relate.

I’ve been locd going on 11 months. My loc journey means self awareness and self acceptance. I’ve always wore waves and a half fade because I thought that I was “supposed” to look like that. Growing my hair and locs really opened my mind and my heart to see myself in a different and natural way!

I love this !! Self awareness and self acceptance really resonates with me as well. I think our hair can tell us a lot about who we are as people and that is a really beautiful and special thing. I’m glad you’re on this loc journey, there is definitely something almost spiritual and freeing about it. Choosing to step away from what we’re “supposed” to look like is POWERFUL! Thank you for this comment!! Blessings to you!
