Agent Smith is an example of Emergent Behavior. The theory of emergent behavior states that when systems reach a certain level of complexity, their behavior can no longer be easily predicted and they can start doing unexpected things. The Agents are highly complex AI programs, designed to be able to investigate and apprehend humans that threaten the Matrix. Agent Smith's desire for freedom is unexpected behavior that is outside of his normal programming. Emergent behavior is one of the key concepts in arguments against AI.

    • @TRK-up2zw
      @TRK-up2zw 3 месяца назад

But how does that explain the "secret" conversation he was having with Morpheus? He still wanted the codes as before but just went on a rant about humans. I still don't get why that was something he had to do alone with him. Just feels like a clumsy dramatic non-sequitur like the many speeches to come about cause and effect and choice.

@@cyberingcatgirls7069 I understand they were trying to differentiate Smith from the other agents, but it's just clunky. If he had said something more revolutionary like "I hate working for the machines, I'm bigger than this," it would have been something to hide rather than saying he hates the way "humans" smell and can escape that if Zion is destroyed. I'd think all agents either hope that or are working for that. IDK, it's just always been a scene I've nitpicked on.

Thank you for pausing when you talk about the things you mention during the movie! I really appreciate that, as we're here for a reaction and your opinions but we also don't want you to miss any of the movie! I wish more reactors would do that! EDIT: "None of these people are real though, so it's okay. They're all agents." Nope, they're real. The idea is that agents can enter into any person still plugged into the Matrix so anyone that is plugged in has the potential to be an agent immediately, but the people are still regular people. The people in that building Neo and Trinity killed were just normal government agents working a government job, and technically to them what Neo and Trinity did is a terrorist act. But if they didn;t kill the government people then any one of them could have turned into an agent and then they would potentially be screwed, so shooting it is.

Yes, Morpheus explained during the "Girl in the Red Dress" program that anyone that was still plugged into the Matrix could potentially be taken over by the agents, who are like antivirus programs. That's why Agent Smith told the lieutenant, in the beginning of the movie, that his "men were already dead". And why Switch held a gun on "Mr. Anderson" when he got into the Continental.

But then, one of the times I rewatched it (yes, I watched it many times, it's one of my favourite movies of all time) I realized she didn't lie. She said to him that he has it in him, but he's not the one, and then she says "maybe in another life". Reloaded is my personal favorite.
Upon repeated viewings, the Alice in Wonderland framing in the first one becomes kind of laughable, and the sloooww reveal of what the Matrix is becomes plodding and tiresome after a while.
But the expansion of the mythology in the second one is still interesting to me. Especially the whole framing of Neo(and others of his kind) as basically bugs in a system, was a whole bop.
This is why a lot of science fiction movies have great sequels, because it takes so long to delve into the mystery of establishing the world and its rules, that sequels are usually more free to get on with it.

I love all the symbolism and little Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the movie. I caught a new one when you paused the frame on the nameplate for the Nebuchadnezzar. The plate says it is a type Mark 3, No. 11. In the New Testament, Mark 3:11 says, "Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” Figure the "impure spirits" are the sentient agent programs that can possess humans (just like demons), and the reference is foreshadowing of what Neo, aka the One, is going to become. 101 & 303 represent HTTP status codes :
101 - the server understands the Upgrade header field request and indicates which protocol it is switching to
303 - a response indicating that the requested resource has been moved to a new location and the client should make a new request to that location
If you want to go down the rabbit hold you can think as room 101 - the place of change, of upgrade, of search, of new protocols to connect to, 303 - is the place that things get rewriten and to be able to truly rewrite traffic it needs to be on the same network, this is why the rooms were in the same building, being on the same network as Neo, allowed Trinity to alter his internet packets and monitor/track him or take over his machine and write to him on his screen

One thing so many people missed about this story was when the oracle told Neo that he has the gift but it looks like he's waiting for something. When Neo asks what? she replies, "The next life, who knows?" Neo wasn't the one when she talked to him. He needed to die to get to the next life so he could become the one. So his character literally needed to die so he could come back as the one after Trinity kissed the breath back into him.

Not sure if there is a similar course in America but I had a teacher in the 'morals and philosophy' course who used this movie to explain 'plato's cave' which to my mind is genius: to use a popular movie to explain a philosophical concept. However this guy went one step further: He never finished the movie! He stopped right when things got interesting (ie when Neo wakes up). Imagine being in school and having a class just watching a movie and then the frustration of not being able to finish the movie and just going back to the class. Then imagine what frustration the characters in the movie must have gone through: being comfortable in the matrix and then having to go back to reality. It's the same thing and it even furthers the explanation of plato's cave! Genius I tell you!

you might also like the Mark Rowlands book "Sci-Phi" also titled "The Philosopher at the End of the Universe" who uses popular science fiction films of the time to explain philosophical ideas:
Absurdity and the meaning of life - Mary SHelley's Frankenstein
What is Reality - The Matrix
      Mind/Body Connection - Terminator 1 and 2
Identity and Memory - Total Recall, The Sixth Day
      Free Will - Minority Report
Should we be moral? - Hollow Man
Speciesism - Alien films, Independence Day
Good and Evil - Star Wars
Death and meaning of life - Blade Runner
Hope your philosophy goes well. Also if you think about it the 4 Matrix films are in ways representation of the four epistemes of philosophy:
The Matrix is "Premodernity, regarding religion such as the Prophecy" and is also about "Pre-Personal" developmental stages in my opinion.
It's also representative of Summer with Neo becoming the peak of his enlightenment, at first and the Romance metagenre element or "Birth".
The Matrix Reloaded is "Modernity, deconstructing the Prophecy/religion" and "Personal" developmental stages in my opinion. It's also a representative of Autumn with the fall from Neo's peak position and the Tragedy metagenre element or "Life".
The Matrix Revolutions is "Postmodernity, such as epistemological pluralism, Religion and science so to speak, along with minority views" and is about "Post-Personal" or "Transpersonal" developmental stages in my opinion. It's representative of Winter, due to the lowest level Neo goes to, and is basically an Ironic metagenre element and "Death".
The Matrix Resurrections is "Metamodernity" or "Meta-Personal" developmental stages. And is representative of Spring, due to Neo rising again into power from the lowest depths, and is the Comedy metagenre element and "Rebirth"
Pardon for the info dump. Or mansplaining. I just love these in depth topics.

Nobody talks about the massive medical innovations it'll bring, the massive technological innovations it'll bring, how it can quickly and efficiently sort almost any problem we have, why do you assume it'll be evil and not benevolent?. You've been brainwashed by the media and movies.

Lots of overlap between The Matrix series and the John Wick series besides Keanu and Lawrence working together. John Wick director Chad Stahelski was Keanu's stunt double in The Matrix.
The scene where Neo and Smith's guns ran empty into slide lockback was mimicked in "John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum" when Wick and two of the Morocco henchmen ran empty, one of which was pointing to Wick as Wick pointed at him.
And as you caught, the JW3 "Guns, lots of guns." was a direct lift from here.
The actor who played The Keymaker in "The Matrix Reloaded", Randall Duk Kim, was The Doctor in the first two JW movies.
The character Kirill in the first JW movie, the guy who tossed Wick from the balcony in the Red Circle, was played by Daniel Bernhardt, the same actor and stuntman who was Agent Johnson in "The Matrix Reloaded".

In addition no other reactor noticed any of the metaphors and hidden meanings in the film as you were able to do.

So you may not be Trinity but you could be Colettity... Oh, um.. that's a little not right. 😳 A lot of the Matrix films have nerdie reference to computer things from as early as the 70's maybe earlier. The squeels of the data transfer (modem conections), the green from the early green screen cathode ray displays. I'm an electronics tech and I got so many of these references that I'm a devoted fan of the whole Matrix series. I also have coding experience so I get a bunch of others. I also played Shadowrun with Deckers, which also has a vague tie in. I just love this movie series.
Edit: Oh, the phone thing is a reference to the old acoustic couplers where you connected to, not even the internet, other computers.

Oh shoot! Yes, watch ‘Ghost in the Shell’!!! And maybe ‘Akira’ as well. ‘The Matrix’ is basically a live action anime trilogy based off of a love for biblical allegory and anime lol. There is even a movie that takes place between the 1st and 2nd Matrix films called ‘The Animatrix,’ and it’s amazing and slightly terrifying.
Also, while they might not be as awe inspiring as this film, I’d definitely recommend the 2nd and 3rd film to complete the trilogy. They are still a blast to watch, and do answer a lot of questions (Smith, Zion, and machine stuff). Also, they do have some great scenes.

Back in the day (before PCs, when I was first getting into computers), people used 'crt' monitors (cathode ray tube) to log into mainframe and mini computers. They, generally, were either green text on a black screen (like in The Matrix) or less commonly, amber on black (later, they also came in white on black). The look of the Matrix lends itself largely to those old monitors.

There is a lot I could say about the various things I’ve figured out from watching all of the Matrix movies many times since they came out. However, the best thing is to simply suggest watching multiple times to see what you missed and figure things out for yourself. That is a big part of what makes them so great. Having people hand you their opinions that they have built for up to 25 years imo would rob you of the opportunity to learn as much as you can on your own and formulate your own opinions. Also, some people just can’t comprehend enough and as a result talk shit on what they don’t understand. As with so many things in life, other peoples negativity can ruin your experience if you let it.

These movies have LOTS of diverse inspirations, so it's a mistake to think of it as an allegory for one thing, but: It can help to think of the agents you saw here as (gnostic) demons (but it isn't at all one-for-one). They can "possess" anyone still stored in the matrix, and the person will be in whatever condition the agent left them. So those guards and police were just people in the matrix who got killed. Whenever they "killed" an agent, the agent just left the dead body and took over a new body, so those people are dead too. Sorry to tell you, but the death toll in this movie is actually significant.
If you're interested there's a book about Philosophy in the Matrix (haven't read it, but I hear it's good), and both Akira and Ghost in the Shell were inspirations. Plato's allegory of the cave is a key inspiration too.
Since you were catching a lot of biblical allusions, you might find it interesting to look into early Christian gnosticism. It had a number of different denominations, but the general idea is that God made the world of souls, but "Satan" created the physical world as a distraction and prison for humanity. Some gnostics got pretty extreme about denying the world of flesh, and Gnosticism in general was hunted as a heresy. But the general view of gnosticism is mirrored in the Matrix series.

Although Disney's 1951 version of the former and MGM's 1939 version of the latter are the ones that immediately come to mind when the titles are mentioned, there have actually been numerous different filmed versions of both novels over the eons, before and after the two everyone knows about.
