Am I the only one who just typed in Natasha Lyonne music video and happened to find this song and is very damn grateful that they did?? Because my god this song is fucking awesome and I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with it😭
333 is half of 666, a half devil that is half of the singer, coming along for the ride, and real close. Robert Smith knows too and sings about the same devil in "Close to Me," among other songs.
"All the devils that you don't know can all come along for the ride / I want to be as close as I can get to you" The song is about falling in love with a person and wanting to let them get to know even the terrible things about yourself to get as close to them as possible, and celebrating that closeness, celebrating being prepared to share that level of vulnerability. Some of the lyrics seem dark but Laura Jane Grace was quoted saying it was meant to be an optimistic song. So as the video starts the man and woman wake up and are both dissatisfied. It's pretty vague about what, but probably about their relationship. It seems rather unfulfilling. After the man leaves, the woman cleans the house compulsively, goes over her appearance compulsively, imagining him watching her, even practicing dancing ... she seems imprisoned in the house by this. It's like she has OCD or something. But it's also like she has something to hide. Like there's a distance in the relationship because she isn't letting her partner see the dirt. The face without the makeup and jewelry. The devils. So at the end she takes off the makeup, takes off the eyelashes and jewelry and all the other crap. And she's happy and she's liberated, and she's finally going to let her partner see that. Whether or not he's abusive to her as some people are guessing ... I'm not sure. Kinda comes down to "why did she feel like she had to hide so much from him?" Could be that he was abusive and forced her to. But we all hide things from each other all the time. Especially for trans women, sheesh, that can involve LOTS of hiding, even hiding from a partner who shows you nothing but love and support. Will they stop loving you if you stop pretending to be this person? You don't know until you try. But without being authentic, the relationship is doomed to end anyway, and at the start of the video it seems like the relationship really is dying. So if the guy's abusive then I guess it's probably time for their relationship to end because she's not gonna take it anymore. But if it's more that she was scared to show him the devils ... then their relationship seems like it's about to get a lot better. I prefer that interpretation because it fits with the triumphant feeling of the song.
🙀Wow, you nailed it quite succinctly, though, can you explain why I felt like this woman before starting HRT?-'Cause I have, Seriously. Maybe it's Post Sex Anxiety? Hmm...?🤷♀ Maybe just relationships can be damn stressful as hell? Plus, Hola! to the Awesome Actress from Firefly-Awesome Job of conveying all the emotions! Bravo!!🙀✌✌💯😽😽💋
i think the video is about a woman who isnt very close to her husband (and who also seems very paranoid and stressed out) so she fantasizes/hallucinates him being home and even though she seems to resist it at first she gives in and dances with him because she wants that relationship so much.
First I saw it as if the role of the "good wife" was driving the main character crazy until she decides to give it up. But now with your comment I thought maybe she goes crazy playing this "good wife" role while in reality all she wants is to be loved?
Stellar peej -one thing about the twist is while it looks intimate with all that pelvic movement, you don't actually ever touch your partner. So maybe it's the illusion of wanting someone. Just my thoughts
I've had such an actor crush on Natasha Lyonne ever since But I'm a Cheerleader. Seeing one of my favorite actresses in one of my favorite bands music videos is amazing~!
I'm honestly going through so much s*** right now and I keep seeing the number 333 everywhere so I searched up the number and came across this song 33 is the number of God think he's guiding me through this rough patch I want to be as close as I can to him
I got this album a few days before it was released and it's still impressing me all the time. I can't think of a better punk band with such a great singer since fugazi. I do have question though, what's this song about? Any ideas?
Wow. I WAY love the song, but I don't quite get the video. (+1 for Natasha Lyonne, tho!) I confess, I'm a newcomer to Against Me. My first exposure was on Seth Meyers last month. I DVR'd the show and I haven't been able to delete it for the band's performance. As a musician myself, both in whole and in parts, the song & riff & chorus just sticks in and haunts my head. I will certainly be checking and back-cataloging this band I've obviously completely missed! Glad I found u guys! Please play Milwaukee soon!
Nah, you are just so brainwashed by our ageist society that you think that old dudes are still good looking but women stop being pretty the moment they turn 30
here's my theory. the house symbolizes her state of mind and she symbolizes her physical self trapped in her own house "state of mind". the man is her inner demons. she can never escape the house because of fear of her inner demon. she cleans obsessively to try to hide her inner demons by presenting her house in to societal standards (spotless clean). but she exhaust herself doing so, and can't keep up with trying to put up a facade. the man appears on and off to really express he's her inner demon, and he comes back to taunt her ever now again. the scene where she sleeps and dances with him shows how she both loathes him but embraces him at the same time (kind of like to putting up with him). the sad conclusion is she can't escape this state of mind because she is always in fear how she presents herself (mostly mentally) because society puts the standard to be a certain way. so she can never come to accept that her mind doesn't have to be spotless and perfect to society's standard and untill then she will be trapped with her inner demon unable to escape
She looked high , especially when she cleaned the vent, the devils and demons are the addictions to whatever it is she take that gets her that high, she's thinking about the dude ..... wondering if he is real or not cause she's that freaking high, she's relieved when she sees him cause he's her dope dealer ....or what u said
Love this video! Shoutout to Nikki from Orange is the New Black. :P I just saw Against Me! live in concert opening for Green Day. I posted a whole video about it. Such a great time! LOVE Against Me! LOVE this album!
I didn't like the song much at first, was one of my first am songs, and only liked the video because of Natasha, but now I love both of them, they go great together.
I love how even though Laura is going through hormones again her voice is still as raw and angry as it was in Thrash Unreal. Even though the new album isn't about anger she's still just a mad sounding gal. Love her so much, she's such a huge inspiration.
+Becca well I know that, I just mean she hasn't tried to change it which I love. Most of the time when my trans friends are going through hormones they voice train (I'm voice training as a trans guy) but Laura isn't when she sings and I like that she's still got the edge to her voice that she always has had.
Little M hormones effect Trans guys voices but not Trans girls because for the guys, it lowers your larynx. for women, it can't shrink or go any higher so one would have to train it
I love the sound of this song which takes me back to the sound of one of the greatest bands of old "Sweet " for those of you old enough to remember that fantastic band and their song "surrender " , have a listen to that!
Sorry got my bands mixed up, was actually cheap trick, still another great band without the fame they deserved. Performed with Pearl Jam live in 2016 as inductees into rock and roll hall of fame
I've always had a hunch that this song had something to do with the book Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. It may have a lot to do with that fact that I was reading it when I first heard the song, but the book is a pretty interesting piece of fiction regarding being a Trans woman, so it seems likely that Laura may have read it.
I'm a little confuzzled why this has so many dislikes. This song rules, and the video was...well...interesting, if nothing else. Is it just a bunch of transphobes? Whatever...keep doing your thing, Laura! The new album rocks, and you've been an inspiration to me, and an even bigger inspiration to my LGBTQ+ friends! :)
Wasn't really into "crash" tbh so I wasn't expecting much, but wow I really liked this song! The video was interesting too, is that one of the ladies from Orange is the New Black? lol
Yeah...Crash was an odd choice for a single for this album. It’s the weakest track and almost doesn’t really seem to fit the record. IMO of course...the rest of the album is pretty great!!
I love the song and the video (and natasha lyonne ofc) so much. like seriously i'm obsessed with this!! needless to say, laura has been my biggest inspiration and has helped me so much with accepting the fact that i'm trans.

I heard this live last month, and it was wicked awesome. They opened up for Green Day, and it was one of the most fun concerts I've been to!
This song is really growing on me.
should have made the running time 4 seconds longer so the time would have been 3:33
Chris Kurland you know I'm not transgender dysmorphic but Laura (Tom) has a great voice and the writing is flawless

Hormones don't actually have any effect on a person's voice. Any newfound voice a trans person uses is all just from their voice training
