  • This wasn't an easy video to make. One of my favourite pets died. Today, I will talk about loss and some of the losses I've sustained in my pet family/reptile room that I haven't addressed.

Sorry to hear about the loss of inferno. We all appreciate the wisdom you have to share about your pets, and the hobby as a whole. Your message was spot on, just because we have cameras doesn’t mean we are infallible. Much love buddy

I literally lost my female african dwarf frog 10 minutes ago and then I saw your video. I did everything to save her but nothing worked..your video made me feel lets say a "bit better".. For us, as keepers its hard to save an animal sometimes... Is just out of our hands..
But videos like this, needs to be addressed more often. Thank you for your honesty and sorry for your loss..

This video is so important. Thank you for braving the risk of poor comments by trolls. We can be the smartest person in the room and still run into these complications. Keep improving the reptile world one video at a time. Your making a difference. You are appreciated, flaws and all. I’m sorry for your loss and i thank you again for your honesty. Spreading this kind of knowledge is important. Difficult…. But important.

I think you missidentified the cause of death. I noticed how skinny he was already in the last video. I know you mentioned you try not to overfeed them but garther snakes are active foragers that need to eat a lot and often in comparison to some other snake species. It takes a lot of energy out of snakes body to start the digesting process (especially after longer time since last feeding) and takes some time before they start getting nutrients from the food item itself. If you feed a substantial food item to a skinny snake, it can kill them. Digesting rodent this size would not kill a healthy garter. People need to hear this.. not to be afraid to feed their garter snakes. We are all learning and sadly, stuff like this happens. Where is life, there is death as well.

Agreed, mistakes happen but its important to learn the correct lessons

    • @sambrailsford3800
      @sambrailsford3800 3 месяца назад +18

Correct, garter snakes have a higher metabolism than most snakes in the hobby and should eat smaller meals more frequently. The issue in this case was not just the size of the meal but the health of the animal (too skinny) post brumation.

My condolences. Having worked at veterinary clinics over the years I know that no matter what kind of pet you have it is always hard to lose them. Of course I have had to euthanize my own beloved pets. A veterinarian told me once that my pets had a very fulfilling life and that bought me a tiny bit of comfort. I know you work hard to give your pets the same. Take care.

I am not a pet keeper at this time but I do enjoy your videos for two main reasons. First is the diversity of the animals you keep and the second reason is that your commitment to the care of your animals and your generosity in sharing your care techniques with others who may be less experienced with these animals. I am sincerely sorry for your loss, but the one thing I can say is that every animal you care for has had the opportunity to have an excellent quality of life with you.

Sorry for your loss. We have all been there and made errors, a few years back I made a similar mistake where I fed a slightly larger mouse then I usually did to a juvenile green tree python I had. I left my house to attend a family party, when I returned I found the gtp dead at bottom of enclosure, it had attempted to regurgitate the mouse and obviously ended up chocking to death. I was heart broken but I learnt from my mistakes and as you said it made me a better keeper

Your channel is so important because you help teach and show others that we are all only human and no matter how well we try to care for others, deaths will occur. It sucks and im heartbroken for you because people who love and care for animals feel those losses alot more often than some others. That was both heartbreaking and uplifting. Heartbreaking, of course, because of the pain you are going through from losing a beloved animal, but also uplifting, because it clearly shows what your viewers already know about you: that you are incredibly passionate, dedicated, and thoughtful about animal husbandry, and that there is no ego here, no pompous boasting of your skills, or how you have acquired the "rarest" or "most expensive" or any of that folderol - just a person who is dedicated to making all animals in his care live their best lives possible, while educating the rest of us along the way. Your authenticity is why we all are here.

It's really sad to hear when any of our scaley or otherwise friends pass, and it can be really rough to know what exactly to do all the time when information can be incredibly limited or we aren't always dealt the right cards to deal with something like some uncontrollable infection. I really appreciate the honesty with your video, and it's something many of us hobbyists will likely experience at some point with that same thought process of doing our very best to make sure nothing ever happens, while also trying to push it ever happening to the back of our minds. The last thing any of us want is the sacrifice of their well being, and it's really hard when something somehow does. Love & appreciate you man.

Thank you for being so open and honest. I think losses regarding animals in generel is a very difficult topic to speak up about, especially since it is so common for people to be judgemental and say harsh things making it even harder since we already blame ourselves for what happened. Over the past months I have lost a lot of animals, some to abscesses even though I went to vets time after time and it has been so horribly hard - blaming myself for what happened and questioning my ability to take care of my animals even though I do everythingfor them and live to make them thrive. It is not something I speak up about because I dont want other people to think about me the same way I do and it is so tough to deal with the loss on your own. So thank you for bringing such a hard topic up and I am sorry for the loss of your little garter.

To add to my previous comment on patreon, losing baby birds or grown adult birds over the bird keeping time I had was always so devastating. Huge hugs to you.

I am so sorry. It is never easy when it is unexpected. We all do the best we can in this hobby but we are never going to be perfect.
I took had the prolapse issue with some of my red eye tree frogs. It was so stressful. I have 3 that are doing well.

Garters are my favorite snakes... but they do die suddenly when things go wrong. I lost the sweetest eastern garter a couple of years ago to parasites and I should have treated her before it happened... still makes me sad to think about. I feel your pain dude! Wish ya all the best

Totally understand the grief of giving your pets a treat and it ends up hurting them instead, as well as the grief of watching them suffer when there's nothing you can do about it. I hope that making this video has helped you process and provides some closure. And I hope the internet treats you kindly.

I’m so sorry man! May the snake rest in peace now & transition peacefully! Sending you distant hugs man. But don’t be too hard on yourself
Sometimes as a hobbiest we run on “autopilot” & just do things. Things like this happen. I have a desert tortoise & “had” a juvenile Russian tortoise. One day I was super exited to introducing them for literally 30 seconds and that’s all it took. My juvenile Russian caught an R.I from the desert tortoise & showed symptoms when it was already too late, died 3 days later.
We learn but we can’t be too hard on ourselves. We learn & do better moving forward & along with some awareness that’s all we can control 😊

Thanks for the transparency and vulnerability here. You know, my very first reptile as a child was a leopard gecko. We did everything the pet store told us and this was a locally owned and operated store, not one of the big chains.
I was watching tv one and turned to see what he was doing and he was coughing blood at the side of his tank. We actually took him to an emergency vet and found out the sand we were told was safe to keep him on had caused internal bleeding. It basically ruined reptile keeping for me until I was an adult.
We feel your pain, buddy. Loss happens to us all.

Thank you for humbly sharing your experience here. I loathe death, but love, love, love animals… so I keep a lot of animals - cats, fish, frogs, geckos - and I am just as vulnerable to the pain of witnessing death as I was when I was 6 (and I am 60 now). When one loves living creatures as much as we do, we never lose our sensitivity to the sting of death. However, I would not trade my love for God’s creatures for an immunity to the heartbreaking sadness I feel over the death of even one of these beautifully designed creatures. The daily fulfillment of being a steward and caretaker of the natural world’s creatures far outweighs the pain and heartbreak involved. Thank you again for sharing a part of yourself and for conveying critical animal keeping information to help us all succeed in caring for our pets!🤗

So sorry for your losses. You are correct, death is a part of life. You obviously care for all your animals. Mistakes do happen unfortunately. Remember you had the best interest in mind for all your animals that passed. You TRIED to save them and that is what truly matters. We learn from our mistakes. Keep doing the great work you do. May those who passed rest in peace. So sorry
