At this age I would be happy to be alive and able to pee - that these guys can still do this is amazing
Yes it is amazing. I have just recovered from a mini-stroke. I spent months practicing, but I still can't quite get my chops back. But one never gives up. Mind you I can always manage to get to the bathroom in time! I've met and spoken to all three of these guitarists, and even played a couple of numbers with Charlie Byrd in the 80s. Barney too, was great company, for about thirty minutes when he appeared with Herb Ellis and Marion Montgomery. Class evening of Jazz. Whenever I got to see these guys play, whoever they were, I made a point of seeking them out and talking to them. They are wise and are unselfish with their advice. That's always been my experience at least. I am in my 80th year by the way...
Hey man thats amazing, hope you doing great! I checked out your channel and you play really nice man i loved it, i even subscribed. Hope your still playing guitar and doing well.
If my english is weird sorry im from spain.
I had the profound pleasure of gigging with Herb Ellis one evening in 1994. It is one of the best memories in my life.
All night long I kept playing double-time stuff all over the place, and Herb played tastefully, melodically. At the end of the night, he called "I want to be Happy" at light speed, and simply annihilated me.
A total gentleman. Very encouraging and musical.
Lol
Yeh Herb could burn which as you said is surprising as he shows so much taste and restrain. He made a couple albums with Joe Pass and some numbers hot!!
One of the true old masters of Jazz guitar. we're all going to miss you Herb. RIP
In 1 I had just moved to Santa Cruz, Cali, from Shiraz, Iran. I was attending Aptos High. One day he music class we had Mr. Herb Ellis as guest. What a wonderful experience that was!
I still remember his warm smiles.
Nothing like watching the result of a lifetime of dedication and commitment. This is beyond great.
Rest in peace, Herb man, you were one the true greats. So long pal.
What a legendry Jazz performer is our friend Herb Ellis..what an amazing life in JazzMusic..!!
I used to have an old Herb Ellis album, live at Montreux, the first track was this song and it is one of the best jazz guitar songs ever
I praise the Lord for giving Mr. Ellis such a beautiful talent.
the way he highlighted each chord is so sweet.
The most beautiful and extrordinary version of the lovely old standard "Exactly Like You" featured Herb Ellis on the guitar. Back in 1969 when I was 10 yrs. old and discovering a lot of Rock, my Dad and I started what we called "Album Listening Night". We would each bring in an album and as we played them LOUDLY on our old Magnavox counsole stereo (much to my Mom's distress), explain to each other why we thought they were great. On this occasion, I brought in Iron Butterflys "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". My Dad brought in the Oscar Peterson Trio album "Hello, Herbie!" It was recorded the first time Oscar and Herb had seen each other since Herb left the trio and was replaced with drums. I was transported to another realm. I have never heard more beautiful guitar passages by any other guitarist....even by Herb himself....than his performance on "Exactly Like You". True to the rest of the world or not, that performance AWOKE me to the beauty a guitar can hold in the hands of a TRUE jazz guitarist. My Iron Butterfly album is long gone. Sadly my Dad is too.....nearly 10 years now. But he left me all of his vinyl album Jazz collection. Come June 6, the anniversary of his passing, I will pull out "Hello, Herbie", put it on the turntable as I always do, and for just a short while my Dad, my mom, Herb, Oscar, Ray Brown, and Bobby Durham will all young, healthy, and back together once more. Herb Ellis....thank you for your elegant and genteel artistry. You will never be forgotten.
Steve Marko Great story , Steve, and very touching too.
+Steve Marko
Oscar Peterson.... I'm having an orgasm,
+Steve Marko
You left out Byrd - was it intentionally ?
+Steve Marko What a poignant story, Steve. Thank you for your words.
lorenzo magazzeni No...just typing in a hurry. Chalie's albums take up a whole shelf in my book case....especially "Summer Nights" and the duos with Ella. Byrd is an undisputable icon as well! :)
More talent on that stage than in some major cities today.
nowadays is culture dead !
"Uncle" Herbie - thank you for all the inspiration and warm, beautiful swing you shared with us. I understand it if you have an eternal session going with Django, Charlie, Joe, Barney and Oscar. The Heavens are swinging tonight!!!
In Brazil we have something like this (but adapted to a diferent rhythm, in case, the "samba"). We call it "chorinho". Both of them are incredible beautiful. Just like a medicine to the ears and minds. Saluds from Brazil. Ray Charles forever!
You watch this old guy like a senile high court judge and think 'that's not much' - then look away and it sounds terrific. So much effortlessly beautiful music from those ancient fingers!
even time won't be able to stop these guys, their sound will resonate for` ever`...
Oh! respect messieurs, je tire mon chapeau
Herb is awesome!!! A master at his instrument !!! I wish I would have been able to see him live.
Man, Tal's chord work behind is just masterful!
slamming!.. sounds great!
Herb was a real nice guy and gladly answered my questions!
I have been playing guitar for near 25 years. I grew up on satriani, vai, jimi, etc. But this is on a different level intellectually and physically. so much jazz chord and scale knowledge memorized mixed with feel and listening to the rest of the group. outstanding!
YES!!!
Jazz is next level bro. I grew up listening to 2000 music. I only discovered jazz around 2008. Soon it became all i listen to.
absolutely amazing.. Herb Ellis is the man
wow. That was GREAT! So flawless. I hope when I am that age I can pick my guitar, let alone sound even close to that good.
In a word: Great, well two words, wonderful.
thanks for his emotional music master..
Molti chitarristi giovani devono ascoltare queste note piene di esperienza. Vera arte e grande jazz !!! Herb Ellis , fantastico ed emozionante. La musica arriva al cuore.
Fantastic rendition from some of my favorites of jazz.
Used to watch him in the afternoon when he was in George Gobel's house band. What a treat!

Brillant!!
My point exactly! A lot of blues players use downstrokes. Clapton does a lot of downstroking too. Yeah I love Herb Ellis. One of my jazz playing friends learned form him and stayed at his house.
What a cool guy!

Nice subscribed. As a guitarist.. I would have loved to be playing along. The band is excellent. Hoagy knew his music. I just closed my eyes and listened.
Smoooooooooooooth.
Well, lets hear him play some Yngwie Malmsteen Rising Force! Just kidding. These guys are the true masters of the guitar. To have that kind of soul, heart and joy of playing the best instrument on earth is a gift.
YES!!!
Just found out that he passed away. What a nice cat. I remember playing a tune with him at the Frankfurt Music Messe years ago.
RIP Herb!
I saw Herb Ellis play solo in Reno when I was in college. An unforgettable night. I was kinda incoherent for an hour or so afterwards.
docsketchy you went to UNR?
@easguitar - I saw this beautiful man play with two other great souls: Oscar and Ray. I had a feeling then that I would never again hear such beauty. That was thirty years ago and I think I was right. Herb had the chops to keep up with Oscar - few could.
like how Tal picks up on the quotes
カッコいいね!!

Amen.
Killing it big time with a basic A-minor pentatonic scale!
Ciao.
That was pretty sweet to my ears, I don't know why anybody would be criticizing it. I must one piss poor player for not understanding how awful it was.
Talk Farlow comps using inversions that span five frets.
old guys playing jazz, does it get any better?
did ye aye
The cat was great
