My “uniform” consists of a suit or a pair of trousers and an odd jacket and I believe that’s as close as I could ever get to wearing a uniform. Cheers from USA

Thanks for your comment! That's probably how I would describe my own style as well, just adding that knits are quite an important piece during winter for me. :-)

I think this is an important point to ponder when you are developing your personal style. and as your personal style development is never finished, its always a great topic to bring up. my personal "uniform" has developed from wearing black chinos and a (black or burgundy) dress shirt to now cargo pants and a black dress shirt. as I now am developing my own garments for myself (pattenmaking, design, sewing, all made by me), I have identified some aspects (like cargo pockets) i dont want to miss, but at the same time, having sartorial elements like hand sewn buttonholes (sometimes silk, sometimes technical yarns like nomex) and classical cuts influence my designs is really great. and of course, as I am trying out different things in my creations, I dont want to stick to a too rigid idea of certain pieces I have to wear every day. even though there are a few favourites I tend to wear 70 to 80% of the time.
(oh, and as to shoes: not very sartorial, but I have found out that I feel most comfortable in fivefinger shoes. these are very binary in perception. there are barefoot shoes that fit to a more classical wardrobe, but I have to invest more time and money into that route.)

Agreed! (Classic) style is a journey and therefore it'll never be finished. That's something I like so much about dressing this way, I learn new stuff every single day and my taste changes over time. It's great that you're basically making your own uniform with the exact features you need and want. I'm not a skilled sewer, so that wouldn't be something for me personally I guess. ;-)

It's hard to say because a uniform can be described as something super strict and always the same or something similar enough to other outfits to be deemed one. Personally for me, if we're going with the latter description, I'd go for any combination of odd trousers or a suit with a completely deconstructed jacket (preferably double-breasted) with mainly casual shirts like Italian knits, turtlenecks, t-shirts, polos, etc. Shoe wise: loafers for summer and chunkier shoes for the winter.
I realized that's actually my goal so I may be wearing a "uniform" after all haha!
Loved this topic, the vibe of the video, and your outfit, brother!
    Also screenshotted lmao

Indeed, the definition is a hard part already. I think if you wanna go all in on the environment aspect, you'd have to wear pretty much the same stuff everyday. Personally, I would not want to do that for a long time. But when going with the description you used, I am probably close to wearing a uniform as well - at least sometimes.
Thanks for the comment and your kind words, bro! I hope you keep the screenshot in honour haha! :D

I guess I’m kind of weird about the idea of a uniform look daily. I say this my “uniform” is a tuxedo. I’ve always liked dressing up and wearing suits. I think I can say that the tux would work as I have six of them (in various colors, not just the black one) and I have a ton of bow ties with and without cummerbunds and I have enough white tuxedo shirts to go at least two and a half weeks between laundering. I put my first tux on when I was 14 and I couldn’t get enough of wearing it much to my parents angst. It essentially became my trademark and I might have worn tuxedos to school if I hadn’t been bullied through my sophomore year. But I did wear a tuxedo to prom. In college is where I finally got the courage to don the tux daily and I haven’t looked back. I will admit I have casual stuff, but when I dress up as I often do, it’s a tuxedo with a tightly tied bow tie. So yes I might be weird but I do look better than lots of guys who can’t seem to rise above the t shirt, jeans and backward ball caps.

My dress style is inspire from my stint in the army. I came realise a gentleman needs two colours for his suit: navy blue for formal occasions, and charcoal grey for events a bit less so. For the odd morning or evening do a grey lounge suit and a dinner jacket is sufficient.

I'm 16. Maybe I could say I have three uniforms; home, school and dapper.
Home consists of chinos, shorts and plain t-shirts. Casual yet decent enough so I don't change when going to the store.
School consists of anything "grey scale"; grey to black trousers, white shirts, occasional grey jacket and black loafers.
Dapper is for weddings, baptisms and such; blazer or sport coat, dark trousers, derbies, neck tie and square.
People know I dress up like this so often I am told in advance "Please just dress normally like everyone else". Then, I have my fourth additional style; Disguise. I just wear what I see everyone else wears; oversized print t shirts and light jeans or yoga pants but you need to really be my friend to get me to do that.

The sartorial styled gent may struggle with sticking to a uniform. I’ve trying to get better at having a capsule wardrobe in recent times. As you get older you find that your style evolves and changes. I’m glad I don’t dress the way I did 20 years ago 🙂

I would love to see you trying to wear a uniform for a month and you document your thoughts about how you feel or what changed in you when your started doing so. Anyways this was a great video!

I consider the things that are offered in normal shops (you call it fashion, I guess) as uniformity. It seems to me that a lot of people just put these things on without even thinking about it.

    • @SartorialStyles
      @SartorialStyles  2 года назад +1

Very interesting thought! You are right, fashion moves from one direction into another direction quickly and every brand around has to follow these trends to still sell enough clothes. On the other hand - the idea of wearing a uniform is to buy less clothes with each of these pieces having a very decent quality. Kind of the opposite of fast fashion, I'd say. ;-)

Likewise. A suit or blazer/sports jacket with odd pants (trousers) and always a necktie with leather dress shoes.
