  • On 13 June 2018, the legend of piano legends, Martha Argerich, as part of her Singapore debut, surprised the full house at the Esplanade Concert Hall with not one but two encores after her incredible performance of her signature Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.3 (available to view on our channel).
    This first encore was the Scarlatti K.141 Sonata in D minor, a staple of her repertoire. We present this video for the first time on RUclips, since her 2018 performance.
    Recorded at the Esplanade Concert Hall, Singapore, 13 June 2018 as part of the Singapore International Piano Festival.

    One of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. I was seated at the second row, and my eyes were fixated on Martha's hands. It's so amazing to watch I can't describe in words.

    She doesn't even need sheet music. Those fingers are blessed too. WOW!!

    Scarlatti Sonata in D minor K.141 by Martha Argerich. Who else could play this with such heart???

    The mark of a "good" interpretation (I hate the word good, but can't think of a better one) is that the performer can play the piece in a way you've never heard, and leave you convinced that that is how it should be heard..... when I first listened to this, I thought it was waaaay too fast - by the end of 30 seconds I could hear things in the music, lines and shapes, that I'd never heard before which forever changed the way I will listen to this piece..... I would be interested to hear whether this approach works on a harpsichord, due to the different tonality, texture, etc but I can't ignore what Martha has done to inform me of what can lie within it... Marvellous!

      Agree so much with what you said. I'm unsure if a harpsichord can reproduce this even if the tuning right because modern grands have instant response and work with repeated fast notes, again, not certain but I think this type of hammer action is not something a harpsichord can do.

    • @br14nh
      @br14nh 2 года назад

      @@colorsofsound4782 - a harpsichord can play repeated notes that fast, it depends on how the note is voiced, i.e. the shaping of the "quill" that plucks the string. I only say that because I have one, and I can get many of the notes to play that fast, but I never got around to voicing all the notes properly when I was restoring it. I haven't learned that piece well enough to play it on either instrument but this makes me think I should try!!

      Un tempo rapide fonctionne aussi très bien au clavecin.

    this is not what scarlatti meant, his tempo was slow and dancing, in fact he wrote 3/8 in key, not a note with a dotted value of 2/4

    No question how good she is, but it's surely played faster than originally intended? I love Scarlatti but this sounds too fast? Though I've just listened to other performances and they are similarly fast. My mistake. I prefer slower where notes can be wallowed in! :-)

      Sviatoslav Richter also played certain Bach pieces at a very high speed. And of course Glenn Gold too. Probably each for its own reasons, but I really feel that the fast tempo section is more lively, and kicks more
