These scenes of Maria and Shadow together were the best parts of Shadow Generations. Shadow is most of times described as a emotionless man with anger inside him, but that’s not true at all. This game really shows us a side of Shadow that deserves to be seen. This game is a love letter to Shadow's fans.
I wasn't really thrilled with Shadow's portrayal here. Maybe he's too stoic to the point of blandness, and him just skating away after Maria's heartfelt monologue felt kinda cheap. Also, not a fan of Kirk Thornton's acting.

Maria helps ground him in a way, which makes them a really good pairing. But in this moment, Shadow knows that being grounded would result in him being incapable of possibly saving her life. At this point in the story, he's still convinced that he can do something rash to circumvent the events of the past. Only later when he "lets go of that destructive anger" does he finally, even if slightly, let go and accept what happened. It's clearly hard on him, but in the end he does what he consider best: to fight, not thinking about anger or revenge, but about protecting people and making them happy, even if he couldn't provide that same fate for the one he loved the most. It's a bit of a repeat from some of his development from Sonic 06, but considering the events of that game being forgotten by him, it makes sense that he might not quite have reached that closure.

There’s a popular theory that Gerald, having gone to Angel Island, based Shadow on the Super Sonic mural (seen in Sonic 3) similar to how the Biolizard seemingly also looks based on the Chaos mural (Adventure) which would also make sense as to why there was a shrine on the Ark based on the Master Emerald’s shrine

That actually was very clever writing. And the use 2 music tracks, one from Shadow the Hedgehog and the other from SA2 in this cutscene. Really nostalgic. Sonic Team seems to be back.

He's a genius that has the best shot at curing her brother" while Maria's dad could be like "That's easy for you to say when it isn't YOUR child at risk and has been separated from her home and parents for these x many years!" and so yeah after fallout of the Space Colony Arc with the government trying to cover everything up it sealed the deal in the two brothers falling out completely for a destroyed family and thus Eggman down on his villainous path given his own apparent neglect ala egg memos from Frontiers.

Fun fact: The idea of Maria giving him the name Shadow actually derives from the Sonic Comics by Sonic Channel. The issue where Shadow reminisces about Maria reveals this fact. And I think it’s been said that at least most stories by Sonic Channel are now canon material. So this is a nice bit of continuity.
Worse - last he seen Gerald, he was full of anger and vengeance, a shell of his former self, who used Shadow as a tool. And in Generations, Gerald assured him that hes proud of him, and is sorry for the path he put him on - even though at this point he had no idea what he'll do in his insanity. I think for Shadow, it was important to know that Gerald loved him. His insanity took this love away, but it existed, and it mattered. Honestly, people overlook this relationship so much, but its so important for Shadow. Like father, like son - theyre the agents of doom, but also the world's last hope. They love and they grieve so intensely. Theyre... all of them lol. I think Flynn is cooking something similar with Sage and Eggman, and honestly, about time!
Gerald, a few seconds after Shadow left: "-...You totally made that up on the spot, didn't you? You just named him that because he's black and it's a cool name." Embarrassed Maria: "-...Yeah."
Its funny but no, Gerald named him Shadow because obtaining eternal life seemed laughable and elusive to him, as dumb as chasing a shadow, and when he actually managed to create him, he was thinking about what destruction this creature could bring, since it was meant to be a tool for GUN and Black Doom. So Shadow felt like a fitting name for a dark spawn. Its Maria who put it into a new perspective, which lead to Gerald starting to love Shadow for who he is, and raising him like his son.

(Which is why Sticks got a mention in Frontiers, its not the Boom version but the one from this site) While some where comical, there were exceptions like Shadow's, which focused on how he got his name. Adrenaline Dubs did a few of them if you are interested while I think the full collection I think was on Reddit or Sonic Stadium translated by some fans at one point.

Seeing Shadow full of rage and anger with an actual purpose is so incredibly cool, we only really see him like this in Adventure 2, Shadow 05, and this game. Other times Shadow is angry for the sake of being angry and edgey the hedgey. Maria is so precious, she really gets you in the feels with her dialogue and music.
I'm fairly certain Shadow remembers he fought and defeated Black Doom before, because he specifically asked about what they meant by "learned", as in questioning that part in particular as to what could Black Doom possibly mean by they learnt something from when they fought before. Since this Gerald probably doesn't know anything about Shadow having to have had physically do battle with Black Doom directly, only that Shadow would need to use the Eclipse Cannon to destroy the comet, hence why the professor would feel a need to bring up there would end up being a future fight between them at all. Then Shadow angrily insisting to himself that there won't be anymore mistakes means he intends to make sure that this time Black Doom or any of the Black Arms will not come back, which would obviously be perceived as a mistake on his part for thinking he had defeated them all for good last time.

"full of anger" is the key phrase. Shadow is moody and condescending but when the chips are down and turn harm is about to befall upon innocents, there's am ember of light in him that _will_ drive Shadow to do the right thing.

Between Shadow Generations' storyline and the way Shadow was written and portrayed in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (Movie), it is a great time to be a Shadow and Sonic Fan. Between the movies, the added content of Sonic Generations combined with Shadow Generations, and when Sonic Frontiers came out, for a while its been so fun to be into Sonic again. I havent been this happy with Sonic content since the Adventure-Heroes era of the Sonic Games
The way that Shadow begins to become consumed by his anger after learning from Gerald of how Black Doom survived could be because, after he blew up the Black Comet with the Eclipse Cannon, he thought he wiped out the Black Arms for good. Since one lone Death Leech survived, and Black Doom used it to rebuild his body, Shadow felt he was to blame for the Black Arms trying to rebuild their forces, and potentially, the Black Comet, and thus that anger boiled over to why he vowed that this time, he would make certain the Black Arms were wiped out for good.
Theory: Sega or Ian Flynn watched the video "Where there's light..." by Pixelrush, showing Maria give Shadow his name and said "Let's subtly include this idea in an official story for the game."
They did BUT Sonic Xisn’t canon to the games as stated by SEGA/Sonic Team so many wouldn’t get that reference. (Although from my understanding Sonic Team did oversea some of it to make sure characters were properly represented) HOWEVER I believe it was hinted in Gerald’s Journals in Sonic Battle but not many in the fandom played that since it was a gba game lol. So for those who knew it’s no surprise but for many it’s a big reveal.

The name is cool for shadow and I get things could be change but as long I’m alive for Canon it’s for me sonic Dx, sonic adventure 2, sonic heroes and then shadow the hedgehog. It feels weird that Doom wants shadow body and shadow eyes red. Like I get it he angry but I rather him have his whole body getting more red as the game goes on. And then when he about to go nuts Maria clams him down and he see he both light and darkness and he will use this anger (Darkness)to protect his love ones. And once people beat the game they can unlock a move called Chaos Blast

He was pretending that he was pulled into White Space at the same time or a little after they were. Though there are slips in the facade (Shadow's vivid anger in this scene) and Gerald Robotnik's already figured out Shadow's from the future, given an optional conversation when he comments about paradoxes and minimalizing the impact to avoid creating any, so it can be inferred he's playing along with the facade to avoid having Shadow create any paradoxes by telling them things that would cause them to... well, significantly change the course of history.

It's funny how Omega in an optional conversation makes light of Gerald's accomplishments both in biology (Shadow's creation) and engineering (The Eclipse Cannon on the Ark). His grandson is on par with him, but until Sage his own ego blinds his accomplishments to world domination and beating Sonic.
Shadow's remained the same since the original Sonic Generations post-4Kids Era. As for Black Doom...I think Sega didn't want his original voice actor back despite having auditioned months prior.

Gerald has actually been slim, just only Shadow 05 is Gerald fat. And Shadow didn’t forget, he’s pretending to be not aware of beating Black Doom because Shadow didn’t want to reveal Gerald and Maria’s fate, so he pretends to have the two think he was pulled into the void at the very same point in time before the incident.
Kinda disappointed that line "Yes, the warrior that will destroy you!" didn't lead to something else, like Shadow acknowledging Sonic, but at least it makes a bit more sense.

Seeing Shadow full of rage and anger with an actual purpose is so incredibly cool, we only really see him like this in Adventure 2, Shadow 05, and this game. Other times Shadow is angry for the sake of being angry and edgey the hedgey. Maria is so precious, she really gets you in the feels with her dialogue and music.
After Maria said all that, Shadow was like :

I'm fairly certain Shadow remembers he fought and defeated Black Doom before, because he specifically asked about what they meant by "learned", as in questioning that part in particular as to what could Black Doom possibly mean by they learnt something from when they fought before. Since this Gerald probably doesn't know anything about Shadow having to have had physically do battle with Black Doom directly, only that Shadow would need to use the Eclipse Cannon to destroy the comet, hence why the professor would feel a need to bring up there would end up being a future fight between them at all. Then Shadow angrily insisting to himself that there won't be anymore mistakes means he intends to make sure that this time Black Doom or any of the Black Arms will not come back, which would obviously be perceived as a mistake on his part for thinking he had defeated them all for good last time.
That question was meant for Gerald. He was trying to hint about their future deaths to them but they still seemed confused at the end

Shadow is moody and condescending but when the chips are down and turn harm is about to befall upon innocents, there's am ember of light in him that _will_ drive Shadow to do the right thing.

Between Shadow Generations' storyline and the way Shadow was written and portrayed in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (Movie), it is a great time to be a Shadow and Sonic Fan. Between the movies, the added content of Sonic Generations combined with Shadow Generations, and when Sonic Frontiers came out, for a while its been so fun to be into Sonic again. I havent been this happy with Sonic content since the Adventure-Heroes era of the Sonic Games
This game is literally a love letter for Shadow the Hedgehog Game fans.

The way that Shadow begins to become consumed by his anger after learning from Gerald of how Black Doom survived could be because, after he blew up the Black Comet with the Eclipse Cannon, he thought he wiped out the Black Arms for good. Since one lone Death Leech survived, and Black Doom used it to rebuild his body, Shadow felt he was to blame for the Black Arms trying to rebuild their forces, and potentially, the Black Comet, and thus that anger boiled over to why he vowed that this time, he would make certain the Black Arms were wiped out for good.
Theory: Sega or Ian Flynn watched the video "Where there's light..." by Pixelrush, showing Maria give Shadow his name and said "Let's subtly include this idea in an official story for the game."
Maybe, or maybe they got the inspiration from either Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts.

I watched the Japanese dub as well, so it doesn’t surprise me why Maria named him *Shadow*
They did BUT Sonic Xisn’t canon to the games as stated by SEGA/Sonic Team so many wouldn’t get that reference. (Although from my understanding Sonic Team did oversea some of it to make sure characters were properly represented) HOWEVER I believe it was hinted in Gerald’s Journals in Sonic Battle but not many in the fandom played that since it was a gba game lol. So for those who knew it’s no surprise but for many it’s a big reveal.

The name is cool for shadow and I get things could be change but as long I’m alive for Canon it’s for me sonic Dx, sonic adventure 2, sonic heroes and then shadow the hedgehog. It feels weird that Doom wants shadow body and shadow eyes red. Like I get it he angry but I rather him have his whole body getting more red as the game goes on. And then when he about to go nuts Maria clams him down and he see he both light and darkness and he will use this anger (Darkness)to protect his love ones. And once people beat the game they can unlock a move called Chaos Blast

He was pretending that he was pulled into White Space at the same time or a little after they were. Though there are slips in the facade (Shadow's vivid anger in this scene) and Gerald Robotnik's already figured out Shadow's from the future, given an optional conversation when he comments about paradoxes and minimalizing the impact to avoid creating any, so it can be inferred he's playing along with the facade to avoid having Shadow create any paradoxes by telling them things that would cause them to... well, significantly change the course of history.

It's funny how Omega in an optional conversation makes light of Gerald's accomplishments both in biology (Shadow's creation) and engineering (The Eclipse Cannon on the Ark). His grandson is on par with him, but until Sage his own ego blinds his accomplishments to world domination and beating Sonic.

Shadow's remained the same since the original Sonic Generations post-4Kids Era.
