There is a special level of Hell reserved for those who cancelled Firefly.
A. Special. Hell.
Gave it a shot? It was given the worst time slot, featured out of order and cancelled before the first season was even finished. That to me is like the bullies in Carrie saying they “gave Carrie a shot” though all they did was set her up for embarrassment
truly. fucking with timeslots and episode chronology is a one way ticket to guaranteed failure.
@@weatheranddarkness Exactly, its not like a cartoon where everything resets after every episode. Theres a chronological narrative so showing it out of order is a clear way to fuck up a show
You're right. Worst time slot, featured out of order and cancelled before the first season was even finished...and let's not forget that it was scheduled "sporadically". They would skip a week to show other programming and things like that so you never knew if it would be on or not. Basically they did everything that you would not want to do if you want a show to succeed.
To this day I cannot understand why Firefly was cancelled. Who in their right mind would cancel such an amazing show with such a great cast? Now we know...
I dont even think they wanted it to succeed in the first place. who releases a brand new show, OUT OF ORDER?
@@gokuvegetatrunks the powers that be always know better.
Firefly was not wanted by the network. They wanted to get Josh to extend Buffy by at least another season instead of ending it after 5 seasons. Firefly was his new idea for a show, so they halfheartedly gave him the bare minimum funding for his new project and put in barely any effort with it as long as he gave them at least one extra season of Buffy and they put all their stuff into that.
Nobody talks about all the children I fed...
Everyone just remembers I ate one baby that one time that had so much potential...
Attacking a major metropolitan area with 50 ft. high killer robots, carving you're name on the moon with a laser beam, marrying your protagonist's girlfriend against her will somewhere on the edge of Mars, there are many ways to become a super villain, my child. Aw poor lady. But she DID cancel firefly 😂😂😂
Of course it was a woman
Still so sad that Firefly was canceled. It was honestly a show that could have had an incredible lifespan.
TBF, the Venn diagram of senior editors at Wikipedia vs. Browncoats is nearly a perfect circle, so...
She's not the only network executive that makes wretchedly terrible decisions. However, she will be the most famous one of the lot.
Eric Idle (Monty Python) reminiscing about the culture that allowed Monty Python to develop. “It was the Golden Age of TV executives. There weren’t any.”
Not only did she cancel it...she didn't even let it finish it's first season!!! Gen. Arnold was a brilliant Revolutionary War hero...until he became a traitor...just saying that people are often only remembered for the bad that they do. I didn't intend that to sound mean.
Or air in the correct order etc etc etc
Wanna talk about people being remembered only for the bad that they did? Take one guess as to who was the sole person responsible for organizing the restoration, recovery and stabilization of a collapsing and shattered country, in the wake of World War 1.
FUCKING. HITLER.
But WHY did they cancel it ? Or Caprica ? Or Dollhouse ? OK, maybe they are not #1 first place shows, but by giving a good show at least a second season, it makes for a nice boxed set of bluerays or DVDs... or keeps the fans happy, and buying merch. The internet changed everything, those long tail profits sell and sell for decades of revenue...$$$
@@SeaJay_Oceans Gay lobby canceled it for sure
If you are in the military and fight against the government you are a traitor.
I'd feel bad for her.........
If it wasn't execs that hamstrung the show in the first place. Why give someone a shot if you're not going to make it a legit one in the first place?
I remember it kept changing time slots. 8 episodes and three different time slots. Someone just didn't want the show to succeed in the first place, and i think i heard rumors at one point that fox didnt like weaton.
@@nunyabisnass1141 I'd believe it. If these guys wanted it to succeed, it would have. You don't get to where they are without knowing a few things.
You'd certainly know to air episodes in order and keep a consistent slot for it. Even if it's a consistent "bad" slot, it's better than hopscotching. Maybe it wasn't her, but someone with say sabotaged it.
Most media executives don't really know what's going to be big or even vaguely popular a lot of the time they just get kinda lucky.
@@purplefood1 that seems to fit with programming trends. One type of show like reality tv hits it big like "the real world" did on mtv as being the official first reality tv series, then suddenly every channel has a reality series. Many did really well, but only because production costs were so low as they didnt have to cast and pay actors. They only had to create a scenario and film eager participants reactions.
Most recently i think of what happened to rick and morty. Stellar first season, ok second season, trash third, and wtf fourth. What turner did with that show was chase metrics. Everytime they got a positive reaction, they pressured the writers to recreate that episode, without any understanding that the reason why ppl liked it in the first place was that it was different. You cant manufacture spontaneity, but they sure as hell did try until it killed the series.
Contract agreements.
They got forced into doing it.
I am more surprised that given they kept most of the set in storage and the growth of new cable channels at the time, no other channel picked it up.
It is from my understanding that other studios did try to pick it up but Fox refused to sell the license. I mean just think about how much they probably still made off of the DvD/Blu Ray sales of the show and movie? I mean have you ever gone to a walmart and not seen a Firefly complete series for sale? Even in 2021 I still see it, and I know it's still being bought.
Soooo Much potential - The back story, the fall of Earth, the inner worlds, those huge ships Mal was always running away from...
Do you want a high profit zombie horror flick ? The FALL of Miranda. It's almost a complete stand alone movie on it's own.
A super high tech city, George Jetson perfect, green energy first world utopia... showcasing green plant covered sky scrapers, renewable energy, spotlessly perfect in every way, UNTIL people just started calling off from work...
and stopped showing up for school, and then very unusual killings, and investigators tracking the murders, but none of it makes sense,
and then people just stopping, giving up, laying in the street, doing nothing, and the whole movie spins around the survivors vs Reavers...
and it's a double jeopardy bad ending, as survivors race to beat the clock of the mind wiping chemical, leaving them laying on the floor, waiting to die - and also trying to escape the planet now covered in corpses and reavers zombie attackers. (48 hours style) They get a small ship & up into orbit, Only to be met by an Alliance Warship, as the Union of Allied Planets blows them out of the sky, without a second thought, killing them all...assuming they were a ship full of reavers. (Night of the Living Dead style ending for all the protagonists).
The Miranda film ends with the Survey team ship entering orbit, and a brief dialog between the crew, 'let's land in that city, it seems all quiet there.' - This is the survey team later found by the crew of the Firefly.... and the recording... and their discovery of what went wrong...
You even leave room for a Sequel to the Miranda movie, their search for answers, battling reaver zombies, and war in space as Reavers and Alliance ships combat each other, with the Alliance losing, and withdrawing, and atttempting the whole coverup. Erasing history. Erasing Miranda.
The two by two hands of blue andriods and A.I. leadership making the censorship decisions - just like the censorship in social media now.
Both new backstory films Dovetail perfectly into the bio-zombie current events, government corruption, fall of society, biolab coverups, deceptions, opression, totalitarianism, and censorship events, that are going on right now...
The story nearly writes itself, and it can give fan service by duplicating some of the scenes later found by the firefly crew, like the man passed out against the glass window, and all the office workers just doing nothing, idly dying at their desks... a good metaphor for ''dead end jobs'' that just suck the life right out of you ! (Decades of paperwork and retirement with little to show for your existence... ) Some Futuristic Horror SciFi,
that you only realize is linked to firefly by the name, Miranda, and the ending Survey ship entering orbit . . .
Well, there are good decisions and bad decisions. She learned the hard way... 😇
So who did cancel Firefly who is this person?
@@americannomadnews5370 Gail Berman
but why should one bad decision gain more attention than a hundred good ones? Especially considering one of those decisions was giving Firefly a chance to exist in the first place.
I always view it as Joss Whedon's arrogance cancelled Firefly - same reason for why Angel got cancelled.
@@CrashSable What is "Angel"?
The one thing she should have realised is, how a fantastic SciFi-Show is rare, thus has extremely loyal fans/viewers/buyers
The reason to cancel shows is a financial decision. It is about budget available and production costs vs. revenue from ads or copies sold.
I doubt any of the fans that wrote a letter, sent an email etc. did miss out on the DVD/BluRay box. So in my book they lost a lot of potential revenue. Like Netflix underestimated "The Expanse". I guess Amazon was happy enough with the revenue to produce a 5th season and so on...
It's not about "Mr Whedon" (arrogance or whatever),.if it would have been they simply would have replaced him.
@@shagrat47 Angel was the spin off show to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for 5 seasons.
There was a period of time when Joss was juggling all three shows (Buffy, Angel, and Firefly) at the same time.
I love the show Firefly I have watched it so many times
Steve Smith played in the NHL for 16 years, but all anyone really remembers from his career is scoring on his own net in game 7 of the playoffs......All it takes is 1 monumentally stupid mistake to define your career and i hope she never lives it down.
Can anyone say Bill Buckner?
Beat me by a year
They had a series that was ahead of its time with a cast that went on to be iconic stars, they did not know what they had and made a compleat mess of it in terms of scheduling and couldn't even put the episodes in the correct order.
these people get paid more than anyone else and yet so far all I have seen them do is make things worse? and then they get promoted or a massive bonus?
+1 for Adam wearing a Rush shirt...
Rush being a band that famously never broke up and kept touring and recording until their health failed. Somewhat the opposite of a show like Firefly.

Gail Berman and the other Fox exec wanted a Buffy. A show that was dumbed down for young adults with limited attention to detail. Josh gave them GOLD and they shit on it.
She is to firefly what Yoko Ono is to the Beatles!

Loved that show
Actually what I'd like to know is who were the brain dead execs that worked out the episode order and scheduling for Firefly. Those are the ones I consider responsible for its early demise.
Edit: Well hell, it looks like Gail Berman was responsible for not just the actual cancelation but also the insane scheduling and out of order showing of the episodes of Firefly. Somehow I feel she must have a partner in crime...and both she and her partner wear matching blue gloves. ☹
Crazy theyu never just re started the series.
Some things you don't get to live down till you fix them.
She probably wasn't the only person that cancelled Firefly.
she probably was....there were almost certainly other people that advised it, but the call ultimately would have come down to 1 person.
It was the gay lobby for sure
I loved that show
We need to see firefly return
If only
Nah, somebody would screw it up. Let it be preserved in amber.
@@paulflack5033 - Amazon did a pretty good job picking up The Expanse, but they got it right after it was canceled. It's been so long since firefly. The cast is all noticeably older, but since the movie gave the show an ending, the only way to do the show is to bring in new cast, use time travel, or have older actors playing younger versions of their characters.
It's just a huge missed opportunity. These days, if they did try a reboot, it would be an all female cast pushing SJW nonsense. Nobody wants that, even the SJWs don't watch such shows or films.
@@Texas240 They could animate the show so they could ignore actors ages and smooth over deceased cast members with similar sounding voice actors.
And while its not neccessary due to how well the TV show turned out I could totally watch an animated Expanse spinoff.
There's a level of hell waiting just for her.
Oh she’s going to the *special* hell

I guess she lives under a bridge now!
don't kid yourself. She is rich
She already looks like a cave troll. Or Jabba the Hutt, whatever you prefer.
If only her career had been as short as the Firefly series...
Seriously, why have they not continued Firefly yet?
Leaving money on the table.
What they need to do is make a Telltale game.
I might have some bad news for you
Oh never mind, apparently telltale isn't dead anymore.
I know there’s novels and graphic novels that continues the Firefly story. It’s not a revival but they’re apparently pretty good!
MAYBE it would have turned into River jumping a shark. What we were left with is SUBLIME.

I enjoyed Firefly
Just so you guys can see. I present, her Wikipedia page.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gail_Berman
LOL. it mentions it here: Network shows under Berman's tenure included American Idol, 24, House, Arrested Development, Bones, and Family Guy. During this time she had the unfortunate job of canceling the cult classic TV series “Firefly” due to the network’s mismanagement of the series.
Then in case you missed it, later on it states: Berman was the first and only female executive to hold the top posts at both a major film studio and television network and she cancelled Firefly.
@@jkocol That second one has been edited. It no longer mentions Firefly. The first one has had "mismanagement" expounded upon, however.
The kille of joy! My lord that made my day reading that! Imagine that on her stone.
As of 3/7/21 her Wiki page reads:
"During this time she canceled the cult classic TV series Firefly following decisions to place it in the “Friday night death slot” and air the episodes out of order."
"Berman was born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn." - Ahh. I see.
Met the Woman that cancelled Fire Fly; Throat Punch!!!

It's been almost two decades. You should probably move on with your life.
I don't think two centuries will be long enough

Firefly isn't that great. I wasn't surprised when they pulled it.

@@anonymousaccordionist3326 dude face it. Firefly wasn't very good. Even Joss Whedon knew it was doomed.
@@the_sixxness You can't convince someone who genuinely liked the show, such as myself and probably Anonymous, as well has a multitude of others to, "just face it" and agree with your opinion which is highly contrary to ours. Good and bad in terms a how a show is generally objective and our core opinion is that we like it and we think it's good show. Your core opinion is that you don't like it and you think it's bad show. That's fine. But no amount of convincing on either end will change the opinion we all have for the show, the feeling developed upon first seeing the show. The only wildcard is if there is eventually a disillusionment or a growing to like the show event in that person's life. But that is a natural process that is dictated by experiences in a person and will certainly not come from the like of a random on RUclips. That is even less likely with a show that is no longer running as there is less of a chance for future content to sour or improve opinions.
You don't think it's that great? Fine that's you. Anonymous things it should be publicize how many dislikes a comment on RUclips has, for other reason I agree. Digitalcurrents had a hard time with the notions of Space Cowboys, even though Mandolorian proved it was a successful formula. That's fine, they eventually came to enjoy it. And cryofpaine is just, eh it alright. That's fine too. But there's no "facing" what just isn't. The continued fanbase proves that it's at least good enough to be like. First time watching it, I liked it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. All my collected life experiences brought me to the conclusion that I liked it. Besides there are several other factors that caused the downfall of the show, unrelated to the formula, theme, or storytelling of the show.
