I have 400 machines at a mid-sized social housing agency that all run Windows 10 These include T61s, Lenovo 490's and a variety of ten-year-old desktops. We don't care what OS we are running since our entire business is custom applications. We costed out a full replacement with retraining and testing and potentially re-writing the 22 custom apps that most of the work is done in. The costs were about 10% of the agency's entire annual budget. Since I retire in two years I proposed that we disconnect fro the internet, connect the machines at different sites with a VPN and continue running the same hardware for the next 5 years (Or at least until I retire) Total cost 1 FTE position (Me!) That has been approved and we are ignoring Windows 11 for the rest of the decade.

Makes sense...just let it all run for 10 years then they can let the wheels fall off and migrate to the cloud....really should just do it now to avoid the inevitable data loss that happens then.

@@itstheweirdguy@itstheweirdguys are social workers with a very low understanding of technology. The concept of the cloud is beyond their understanding. The problem is they have no real infrastructure to speak of. They have me and only me for their entire IT support. I am a former social worker who likes tech working to rearrange the deck chairs on the titanic. I got the job because I started helping everybody and they saw I was spending more and more time fixing computer and application issues. Until they get CEO's and mangers with experience using cloud based computing they won't move. It costs too much and they are too invested mentally in their aging hardware.

Now, I do wonder if they're going to add a setting that lets you decide whether you boot into Game Mode as is standard on the Deck, or directly to the desktop like a normal PC. I'm not sure whether their goal was really to become a standard desktop OS, but there's an opportunity here.

I run Linux as my gaming machine and have zero problems playing anything I want. Linux has evolved to the point where you never have to use the command-line so the old myth about "it's hard" is pure BS these days. All you need to do is cruise the menus and click like in Windows to do anything you want. There are no advertiser ID's in Linux. While there is malware that targets Linux, because of the way the system is setup it won't really matter since it can never get to your Kernel which is the heart of a Linux system. Linux has less overhead making it much faster and unlike Windows, it doesn't slow down over time. There are a ton of apps which can be installed with the click of a button and unlike Windows, you can change the look and feel of your desktop. I don't mean just wallpaper. I mean EVERYTHING. Also ... it's free. Stop bowing down to MS. These days there is no need to.

Windows 11 isn’t an operating system. It’s a thin client with local processing capabilities.
Now I know there are hacks to allow for local accounts, but customers shouldn’t need to behave like criminals to use their machines.
As there is no legitimate fresh install path, I’m considering my options.

I have a pc that runs on Windows 11 and An old one that used to run on Windows 10. With the support stopping I decided to put Linux mint on the old one. While I didn't use it anymore because Windows clutter had increased the boot time to more than 5 mins (and no heavy startup programs or viruses, did a clean install to no avail, it was just Windows clutter). When I booted with Linux mint it took around 30 seconds. I'm no power user by any means but for using a pc what most People use it for Linux mint is just as easy as Windows (though compability for specific things might be less). Mint is definetely more stable and when setting up all hd's from both pc's in network via router it took me 15 mins with Mint and 4 hours with Windows because if it doesn't do it automatically (in case of An exception) you're pretty much screwed in identifying the problem with Windows (does troubleshooter ever actually identify the right problem?). Anyway, thanks to the power of greediness by Microsoft I've discovered the power of a stable Linux system. I'm a gamer so I use Windows 11 because if compability but when steamos3 desktop is released I'll probably leave Windows all together.

And I refuse to upgrade / update to Windows 11 with all its spyware / bloatware BS. Transitioned to Mint Cinnamon 22 over the past month or two, and now only maintain a W10 dual boot on a separate drive 'just in case' the Linux drive quits (not likely). And that W10 is a 2021 build of 64 Professional with all updates disabled.

I keep computers until they break. I have long resented Microsoft treating my computer as theirs. I am not throwing away working machines just because of an operating system. MS no longer has monopoly power over me.
I already have Chromebook laptops for web surfing, but I do have a powerful tower computer running W10. So what to do about that?
This Christmas I tested various versions of Linux & have settled on Linux Mint as a longer term trial to see if it is a practical option. Only been using it for 10 days. It is running from a plug-in flash memory stick.
I often use the PC for programming. I have also used it for music production, 3D modelling & animation creating music videos.
My first use of Linux is that I have installed VSC (programming editor) & Xampp (database and php & apache server). They are all running normally. But it has only been a few days.
I don't know how this will turn out, but throwing away millions of working computers seems an awful idea.

Well here we are nearly 4 years into Windows 11 and so far the only computers no longer able to run the latest release are systems from 2008-2010. So pretty much anything with an Intel Core i3/i5/i7 or AMD equivalent will be able to run Windows 11 24H2 with requirements bypassed and receive updates far longer than Windows 10 on the same hardware. And when Microsoft does decide to release Windows 12, or whatever succeeds Windows 11, the last feature update could receive support until 2031, similar to how Windows 10 22H2 is being supported through this year, lining up with Microsoft's 10 year service life for a Windows version.

    STEAMOS...
Not ready yet for mainstream, and obviously none of the Linux distros are for the average, uneducated person who wants things as simple as possible. BUT.. the hard work with Proton/Wine etc is starting to pay off. At some point the PROS outweigh the CONS for people to switch to Linux. That will vary by the person, but we're getting there. Microsoft may want to rethink how they force a W11 transition. People won't switch to Linux by the millions THIS TIME but it will put a bad taste in their mouth, so their next PC in 2030 or so might not be Windows. Give me "STEAMOS" pre-installed on a nice, compact desktop PC/console that mostly "just works" for the average user. That MIGHT be my next computer in a few years... maybe with some Windows software that can first SCAN my system and detect any issues with compatibility for drivers, applications then offer an easy MIGRATION solution.
