Absolutely live! I watch the olympics opening ceremony every olympic year. And while watching it live on friday, this performance started and I started yelling ITS GOJIRA!!! 😂 Literally jumping up and down. What an amazing performance, with the french historical context, it was literally art!! So proud of them, and so hapoy for all us metal heads worldwide!! Thanks Gojira. 🖤

Oddly enough, I also know that the commentary isn't French, because I'm half French and I would pick up on that very quickly if they started speaking in French.

No, this happened live. I saw it live on tv the other day. Lady Gaga performed first, and then after a lil while, Gojira did this, their rendition of 'Ça ira' and with Marina Viotti (the opera singer on that ship). I still can’t believe that they’re the first metal band to perform at an Olympics ceremony, and I witnessed history live on tv!!🔥🔥🔥

Very hard to believe this was played live. There's a difference between singing live and having a whole band playing live. So many eyes and they all have to perform and start in time where they haven't been able to rehearse.. And indeed no drums are mic'd, so this has to be playback, which only makes sense in this context.

It was not live. At least not 100%. If you look close you will see that the drums and opera singer are not miked... the rest could have been live. Some expeculate that only the lead singers voice was live...

Hello, thank you for your video and your reaction, we are very proud in France of this ceremony and this painting. It represents the revolutionary history of France, the building is "La Concièrgerie" a former prison in Paris where certain aristocrats were imprisoned and executed during the revolution. The boat that we see parading represents Paris and its motto "Fluctuat nec Mergitur" _ (It is beaten by the waves, but does not sink) and of course the blood that flowed during a large part of the history of France . So much pride to see this in the eyes of the world and especially all the positive reactions from the Metal community and the world in general. Thank you

it was 'performed' live, but recorded in advance. Joe's MIC might have been live, and they were 100% playing every single note up on those balconies, but what we 'heard' was recorded in advance. Probably for all the performers but maybe not. Like you said there were no mics and none of the guitars were plugged into anything. But Joe's vocal mic was wired and went down the same cable path as his harness.
