Great job on that handle! I could see just by everything you did there that it took a truck load of work to accomplish but the end result is fantastic! Well done.
Woot Woot, new and Exciting. And with a confident narrative, this is the Bestest EVER! I had to comeback to this comment and add this, I find you an amazing Blacksmith. You work to very physical jobs and then find time to make, edit and post videos. You do this all with the most basic of tools in a confined space, you do these in disregard of Heat or Freeze, and you do them for absolutely no reward. You embody absolutely what is a Blacksmith. I am honored to know you.
Thanks.. But lots of the narration was cut.. Most people have been pushing for the voice aspect.. I tired to treat it like doing a teaching session which is what I enjoy dong, but it doesn't work because there is a lot of information that gets cut out since all the reheat scenes get cut.. Thanks . .:)
It has been a while since I made a basket twist handle, I like the way you have done this one with the welded piece in the middle and the finial end, nice variation. Certainly something to have a go at, it will certainly stretch me, that small bit of steel welded into the cage with those narrow strands - no room for error there!
Its not to bad. the extra mass of the bars helps a lot. This one can easily be done in a gas forge or any forge as well. The thin handle one would be tough if not impossible in a gas forge as the wires would simply disappear being overtaken by scale.
So make the first weld, then weld on a shank. Straighten out the rods....and go frog gigging. Got it. Seriously...great video and its so good to hear your voice!
Thanks on the voice.. I'm shocked at how many like the narration better.. Maybe I'm just that weird.. Frog gigging.. Years back.. But yes this method can be used for that as well for fish spears also..
I thought about the spear fishing rig too...but we do more frog gigging in north Mississippi than we do spear fishing. Can't drink beer underwater. I appreciated the written instructions, but narration seems to video better in my opinion. Regardless, I really enjoy watching your work. No nonsense and straight forward. I was surprised to see that you didn't weld the four bars together in a half-round bottom swage though....that was ballsy just welding on the anvil face. I would've made a mess of it!
@@jamesmcmillen4828 Sounds good.. I think you are correct with the narration as it's been proven by many others.. I have a lot of quirks.. I love the old industrial films with the titles.. I"ve been putting off narration for years simply because I don't like someone talking when I'm watching what is going on.. I know the channel would grow faster with narration, but.. I'm usually in the minority so nothing new there.. The bars are technically welded before I even bring then to the anvil.. next time your in the forge.. Put in 2) 1/4" round bars 12" long or so, side by side and bring them up to welding temperature while the ends are touching and able to rub against each other in the fire, with no flux (you can use it if you'd like).. and wiggle the bars together in a very small motion like a cricket rubbing it's legs together.. As the flames change color you will notice something about the bars.. :) Anyhow, kinda neat.. It's the same technique used in the ( How to forge a blacksmith twist basket when you don't have a consistent forge weld) I use a swage there because there were 9 rods but the wiggle, wiggle works extremely well and I use it all the time for tricky welds.. ruclips.net/video/dBtnzbdZ93g/видео.html
Again I love love your work , Today I made a handle for a pizza cutter ( that sells at wood craft stores) my handle was a dice twist which is fun but not beautiful as your weave works . I got to take this as a chalange to try.....Thanks again

Pretty easy.. If you can do a basket this will be a piece of cake.. :) I have started a thread on IForgeiron.com.. If you do make one post back to that thread.. I'm sure everyone including myself would love to see the results..
Great video. I like that style with the disc in the middle. Tricky but beautiful. Off the subject....your flux can...Collin Street Bakery!! Wonderful fruitcakes!! How in the world did a Collin Street Bakery (Corsicana, Texas) fruitcake end up in Rutland, Mass.?? I used to buy those every Christmas for years.
Thanks... It's really not to bad.. Since the disk is held in place it really isn't bad at all.. Very slow heat, bring the once corner/rod up to temp and weld it, straight or align the disk and there you go.. Took longer to put the disk in the center of the handle than it did to weld it.. :) Yes, it is a fruit cake can.. Yum.. Love fruit cake.. :) We ordered it and they deliver via USPS.. We still get a couple a year.. I don't know why fruit cakes get a bad wrap.. We love them.. :)
John, you are not alone on the narration.. To me I dislike narration and love the subtitles but I keep getting asked if i'm going to do more narration.. I like the titles for many reasons.. 1 of which the video can be stopped and read, and reread then hit play again.. All of the titles happen just as a new action or direction has to take place or as a warning..
@@jlpservicesinc1452 well at least with you talking no one needs to wonder why you're wearing fingernail polish LOL. I could take the videos either way talk or not and you do have a point about being able to go back and re-read. I'd say do what you're comfortable with

So I myself am figuring it out when I start measuring the metal in the beginning of each video.. If you watch each beginning you will see when I am measuring the metal that I slow down markedly.. It's because in my mind I am figuring out the amount of stock needed and then how to process the forging so others can follow along.. I'm writing all this information to you.. because most won't read this comment... Again what I am showing is a skill set..
