    Mind blowing! Such brilliance in simplicity on a subject that continues to cause such controversy and that every 'expert' has the answer to. Bravo sir!

    This is the only way I can lose fat and feel good. I know by experimentation that this is the true way to get lean and stay truely healthy. Well done Mr. Taubes

    Reading the previous comments. This is not for those folks who have that last 3% of fat to lose or 10 lbs. THIS is for those of us that are doing it in the box, doing it in the kitchen and are still carrying 30 to 50 lbs of fat!! A few generations of European starch based diet, coupled with contaminated food via pesticides, adding to that a generation (mine) that ate out of a box, jar or tube that could last in your cupboards for years and you can only come to the conclusion that at some point there is going to be some serious foul ups in Darwin's evolutionary train.

    A few options: Metabolism up, body heat high, jitters, bouncy legs, hyper, can't sleep, overactive. Two, body doesn't accept it, throw up, pass through quickly, diarrhea... But quite naturally super high calorie over time will eventually put on some weight too. Most experts will claim you can't overeat healthy foods, the body tells you when to stop. If I try to cram endless butter and cheese down my throat, I'll quickly throw up at some point. Or I just can't swallow another bite of steak.

    we really have to begin by rejecting the notion that there is one single "key" to anything, that is just ONE THING. everything that lives does so bec of a synergy. wholism is the way forward, as it was in the distant past. that said, I'm really enjoying listening to the info on insulin.

    fatty meant, not lean meat, is more helpful to losing weight due to fatty meat does not cause insulin to spike.

    Fat can be stored in the absence of insulin by acylation stimulation protein (ASP). Dietary fat is preferentially stored as body fat. A caloric deficit is still required to lose weight

    When you were watching "portion control without controlling the type of food you eat" you lost weight because of the subsequent cut of nutrients that trigger fat-storing hormone responses... particularly carbohydrates. When you laxed off portion control, the subsequent cut was eliminated, and thus those foodstuffs returned, and so did the weight. If you shrink your portion size, you shrink, for example the amount of carbohydrates going in. This shrunk your insulin response, and shrunk you.

  • @fancypants2007
    @fancypants2007 11 лет назад

    Good question. If you eat 6000 cals of healthy fats, protein and minimal carbs, there will be a small insulin response (probably depending on the type of protein), so very little will be stored as fat. And you will poop a lot.

    You can't completely throw out the E= Ein - Eout if you do restrict your carbohydrate intake, then. To me, what he's saying is "the conventional wisdom is that it's all about calories, when it should be about the macronutrients that give us our calories." In this case, it makes sense to me, then, that one should still have to focus on calories, but instead tailor their percentages of macronutrients (ie 35% p, 30% c, 35% l) and their meals to regulate the biological functions they were given.

    Then explain when I watch portion control without controlling the type of food I eat, I lost weight. When I laxed off portion control, I gained weight back. I didn't eliminated the carb heavy foods when I monitored the control, just the portion sizes.

    the thing that i still dont quite understand is what happens if you eat 6000 cals of healthy fats, protein and minimal carbs? there will not be an insulin spike, fat should not be stored. you cannot assume the person would become a giant muscular freak... is the metabolism ramped up?

  • @futuristiclettuce
    @futuristiclettuce 12 лет назад

    Well he never said the Law of Thermodynamics doesn't apply. In fact, he stated repeatedly that it always applies, it's universal. It's boring. If your given 500 cals a day, it doesn't matter what the carb/protein/fat ratio is. You will lose weight
    The issue as it pertains to dieting is that people can't control how much they take in. It's impossible to do over a lifetime as illustrated in the first video. The solution is to simply cut those foods that trigger insulin (which triggers fat storage)

    protein causes insulin levels to go up but not as much as carbs

  • @VikingMan44
    @VikingMan44 12 лет назад

    Not entirely true. Healthy kidneys allow only very, very small amounts of protein to pass in the urine. Protein is too big for healthy kidney glomeruli to allow to pass. If you are peeing out lots of protein, you have something like nephrotic syndrome or FSGS(kidney disease), which are very bad juju. Though I agree with Taubes premiss, that regulating insulin is the best means of reducing body fat.

    People in western cultures develop insulin resistance. I imagine a culture that has been eating a primarily carb based diet for 1500 years + have a genetic insulin resistance.

    Go to 23:38 for brilliant conclusion. "This is biology; it's not physics.The laws of thermodynamics have nothing to do with this. They're always true. Who cares."

  • @MorteWulfe

    That is not what is being represented here though. The idea promoted here is that regardless of "starving" myself the fat cells should maintain their own survival independent of the rest of my body. I think there is something more than this theory, although this theory does play a part.

    false, it may not work for everyone, but what does. I have been VERY low carb (except for one carb-up meal/week) and i have gained strength, increased energy, lost fat and feel really good overall.

    The problem is that those who eat the most carbs have the lowest risk of obesity and those who eat more fat have the greatest risk. That is: people who eat the standard diet, which is high in saturated fat (i.e. animal tissues), but low in e.g. fiber (from plants), have the greatest risk of obesity, whereas vegan populations, who eat plants and thus cannot avoid carbohydrates, generally eating 60-80%+ of their diet as carbs, have the lowest risk of obesity. So his conclusion doesn't fit with observation; with what we see in populations actually consuming diets that highlight the affects of eating more carbs or eating more fat. There is actually an audio of clip of Taubes lamenting all the children raised vegan who will be cursed to a life of obesity - the exact opposite of reality: they have the lowest risk and incidence of obesity. The theory that he is hypothesising, in other words, makes no sense. Eating more carbs does not regulate towards fat retention and lead to obesity - it does the opposite.

    Addiction to food... never addressed and to me the underlying issue to his problem with the law of thermal dynamics as well as his analogy of obese mother starving child i.e crackhead mom gets high but doesnt buy diapers or food. take away choice as in holocaust i never saw one chubby person at Auchwitz and all they got was POTATO SOUP(horrible on gi and nutrition)
