    Update, the Definitive Edition has changed Alvis' necklace into an Aegis shaped Core Crystal.

    • @stormcutter59
      @stormcutter59 4 года назад +42

      So that's kind of a bummer cause it means their was never gonna be a second game that strung together with the first game. It also means the 3 core Crystal's were entirely made up. So basically 2's plot was completely unplanned and made up.

      Stormcutter 59 how is that a bad thing

    • @stormcutter59
      @stormcutter59 4 года назад +11

      @@chrono7318 Its a little bad, only because whatever the added core crystal around Alvis replaced is now a changed asset that wont ever be known anymore. I know it's a small thing but it's more than just changing a little trinket, it's like changing the lore or Xenoblade 1. It tells me Alvis, whatever he was before, wasnt a core crystal from the world of X2, so it speaks more to the philosophy behind the original game being changed. Also it makes me wonder what Alvis' mysterious existence was meant to be before.
      I just dont really approve of changing previous game assets to better "fit" with the lore established later. It kind of messes with the vision of the game as it was before. It's not really THAT bad of a thing but I personally hate seeing things of the past die in any sense. And I love the lore of the 3 core Crystal's in general and how they connect so this softens my disappointment a bit.

    Slight spoiler...
    I wonder if anyone ever noticed how similar Alvis's lines are with Pyra's when they first met Shulk/Rex?
    Pyra: My name is Pyra.
    Rex: Oh right. Mine is--
    Pyra: I know you. You're Rex, right?
    Rex: How did you know my name?
    Alvis: My name is Alvis.
    Shulk: Alvis? Um, my name's--
    Alvis: It's Shulk. Isn't it?
    Shulk: How did you know that?
    Plus Alvis calls the Xeno2 universe his home. And Alvis literally performs a blade combo when he was teaching Shulk Monado Purge. Even does the same weapon toss back to the "driver". Also becomes affected by the Apocrypha like how Rex & crew were affected by the waves from Obrona in chapter 3. The particles were red as well. There are more similarities, but I gotta remember them first. lol

    Ontos color is orange.
    This is Pneumas emerald in RGB: rgb(0, 255, 155).
    If you move the numbers to the next position you get Logos purple: rgb(155, 0, 255).
    So, if you move the numbers again to the next position you get Ontos' color: rgb(255, 155, 0).
    You can slightly modify the numbers, that just varies the tone. This 3 colors are perfect equidistant between them and white color.

      Or, more simply, orange is the only secondary color not accounted for. Green (combination of yellow and blue) is Pneuma, purple (combination of red and blue) is Logos, but orange (combination of yellow and red) is not present and is likely the color of Ontos' crystal.

      When I started watching this video and saw what Alvis looked like again, I KNEW that that key around his neck could be his processor, even before he mentioned it. Just look at the shape, it has the same general outline as the Aegis cores(minus the teeth, of course), AND it's orange. Of course, I know that the creator didn't mean for it to look like an Aegis core since he didn't even think about the second game back then, but the shape is still subtly alluding to the Zohar/Conduit. I think it's more of a conscious decision to make the Aegis cores in the same shape and place them in the same area as Alvis's key that makes the other two a reference to HIM since Lobos and Pnuema are essentially also AIs that had the same function as him before they became blades.

    I think there is another connection that you didn't cover that also leads credence this whole subject.
    Near chapter 6/7 Malos mentioned that the Aegises do indeed have redundancy and that's why he needs Mythra's core. Her core contained at least partial data of his own that he needed to repair his. I believe the same is true for Alvis. Zanza's and Meyneth's Monados, I believe, are Alvis' attempt in recreating the other two processors. Since there isn't full redundancy, he is only able to create thier weapons (yes I think Pnuema's three weapons parallel more to Meyneth's Monado as it also has three forms that share Pnuema's color scheme as well general shape) so Alvis decided to give the Monados to Zanza and Meyneth to fill in the gaps. This is why "Shulk's" Monado is called the True Monado. It's Alvis' Aegis weapon. The only one Alvis has full data on.

      While that is a great theory, I'm more inclined to believe that the Monados are just different versions of Ontos' weapon. The Aegises all seem to have one or more lower powered forms, which have a common name for their world, and their true "greek name" form. We see Pneuma's as Pyra and Mythra both physically and in weapon form, and we see Ontos' Zanza and Meyneth Monados and his physical form, Alvis, which probably is the one that is associated with Zanza's Monado as he is one of Zanza's disciples and opens up Monado Purge in that one scene where he and Shulk fight like a Blade and Driver combo (Pyra is never seen with Mythra's sword, for instance, so we can conjecture that Alvis using Meyneth's Monado would take on a different physical appearance, maybe even that of a woman as he is quite an androgynous individual in and of itself and a computer core inherently has no concept of gender, when we look at it). We never see Alvis' true Ontos form (unless it's meant to be the green light at the end, which might even be retconned in Definitive Edition soon), but we do see his true Ontos weapon, the Third Monado. We also never see Malos' Logos form, presumably because what is required to trigger it is a strong bond with a driver (Pneuma and Rex, Ontos and Shulk) and he and Amalthus never really cared for each other other than Amalthus' influencing Malos' nihilistic philosophy.

  • @JediWilli
    @JediWilli 5 лет назад +90

    Pneuma's sword has a ring that could have Monado Art Symbols if neccesary. There might be something to look in to there, that the two incomplete combos (a driver without a blade ((Shulk)) and a blade without a driver((Malos))) both use monado arts, while the one, complete combo (driver AND blade ((Rex and Pneuma))) don't.
    I also believe that Rex and Pneuma have equal power to Shulk with the True Monado. It's just a question of how much power was neccesary at the time. Mythra specifically told Rex not to get carried away with all that power, and I'm fairly sure Rex kept that to heart. Shulk, meanwhile, has no reason to hold back against Zanza.

    • @aleseaux
      @aleseaux 5 лет назад +16

  • @crimsondaemon906
    @crimsondaemon906 4 года назад +82

    Looks more like
    Logos: Destruction
    Pneuma: Creation
    Ontos: Administration, Arbitration
    These follow more in line with their unique abilities and in game roles. Pneuma fully awakened has full control over elementary particles, as shown in the ending scene when she recreates herself as two separate entities from a single particle touching her inactive processor and the reality warping, which is, by the way, the same thing as recreating the universe, just on a smaller scale. She could do it, but her imprinted personality from Rex as a pure being meant that she would never consider it as the harm it would do would be too great. However, it is stated in game that she has the power to rewrite the “laws” of that universe, and is explained as the Zohar’s power. This is something, not possible for either of the other two and makes her far stronger than Ontos when her admin privileges are restored.
    Ontos, I believe is admin, or arbitration because through the entire first game, he is essentially collecting data through the physical body he uses and the 3 Monado wielders. He then uses that data to determine a “course of action”, or side to take. He never, however actively intervenes in the events taking place, as this is not his role. The closest he comes is sending power to the monado wielders. This includes bringing Shulk back to life. He pulled his consciousness away so as to not interfere with the course of events and keep himself concealed. Resurrecting Shulk was more Ontos responding to his will than an independent action as shown in the scene when they speak. This is very similar to the beginning with Rex and Pyra, as you said. The difference is, Ontos needed confirmation. Pneuma did not. This makes sense if Ontos’ role as a core processor is essentially administration, or arbitration as that role is to manage the flow of events to create a desired outcome.
    This is why it makes sense that Pneuma presided over creation and not just life, and Ontos is an administrator, or arbitrator, as he move behind the scenes to bring events to his desired conclusion. It also helps your theory on him moving the inhabitants of XC1 to the currently restoring Earth in XC2. He has the power to move them to a desired ending. This includes other dimensions, but he can not create, or destroy a whole universe as those are abilities specific to Pnuema and Logos

    Another very observant explanation :) Thanks for all these awesome videos!
    Regarding the meaning behind the names:
    *Ontos* like you said comes from being/“I am”. God himself is often referred to as “the great ‘I am’” = *The Father*
    *Logos* meaning reason or word, is a concept in Christianity referring to the word of God and is a title for Jesus Christ = *The Son*
    *Pneuma* ...well you don’t have to think far with the word meaning spirit = *The Holy Spirit*
    These made up the *Trinity Processor* and were names said by Klaus to be testaments to their creator’s arrogance, or something like that. Yeah, kind of arrogant and very much with the Xenoblade theme of playing God to make an all-powerful processor named for (and maybe made to rival) the Holy Trinity.
    How these names relate to their powers I can’t explain. Just found it to be cool background.

    • @yum2735
      @yum2735 5 лет назад +7

      The third Aegis is called Ousia in the Japanese version.
      *Ousia* means essence/substance and from my understanding has a pretty similar meaning to *Ontos* as a noun in Ancient Greek. Specifically, compare the concept of Ontic in English. In fact, both *Ontos* and *Ousia* derive from the same verb meaning "to be".
      In the context of Christianity, *Ousia* refers to the essence of either the whole Trinity or the specific essences of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I guess the former also could be interpreted as the essence of The Father.
      In any case, the concept of *Ousia* is very much related to Christianity (Holy Trinity) and Gnosticism, which is probably why the localizers decided to obscure it a bit.

    • @hernobleness
      @hernobleness 5 лет назад +2

      @@yum2735 Interesting! I'm always curious about the original Japanese words for stuff in this game, since they give more clues to the original intentions of the creators. The localizers did a great job imo of keeping these references in the game, but sometimes it's not super clear what they were going for. Like to Ontos tying to The Father thing seems like kind of a stretch, but Ousia seems a bit more probable.
      Or I've always been curious about the capital city names, for example. Have no idea if they're supposed to have a tie-in to the 7 Deadly Sins theme or not.
      Nice to see you again btw 😄😂

      @@hernobleness I don't know all the changes either since I only played the English version with Japanese voices and otherwise watched some Japanese RUclips videos.
      Honestly, they didn't do a great job at keeping the references since there was no reason to obfuscate them to begin with and most of the time, the reference is completely lost.
      From what I noticed:
      1. They obfuscated Christian symbolism:
      Seven Deadly Sins, Pope ("Praetor"), Vatican ("Praetorium"), Serpent ("Ophion"), Holy Grail ("Aegis"), God ("Architect"), Paradise ("Elysium") etc.
      2. They removed Japanese symbolism:
      Kagutsuchi ("Brighid"), Wadatsumi ("Aegaeon"), three of The Four Gods: Byakko ("Dromarch"), Seiryuu ("Azurda"), Roc ("Suzaku"), Japanese names of the Ira/Torna members, etc.
      It's weird how they only slightly altered Shin ("Jin"), but completely changed Metsu ("Malos").
      3. They removed or obfuscated German names:
      Goldmund ("Goldmouth"), Sieg/Siegfried ("Zeke"/"Ozychlyrus"), Selig ("Eulogimenos")
      4. They also changed original(?) names:
      Meleph ("Morag"), Nephel? ("Niall"), Arst? ("Alrest"), Ars? ("Titan").
      I'm not sure where those come from. Alrest is still close enough, but the other changes seem completely unnecessary to me.
      5. They removed a lot of Japanese Otaku references from the Tora and Poppi scenes and also apparently took issue with some Japanese stereotypes.
      Now, apart from name changes, religious references and Japanese (pop) culture references, the localization was actually quite good. From what I've seen in Japanese RUclips videos, less notable dialogue and names are generally more faithful to the original, e.g. Torigo ("Torigoth"). It's still an unnecessary change, but at least they only altered it a little bit. I don't know if the capital names are translatable; at first glance they seem original to me.
      In any case, I'm personally not happy at all about the changes. When the next game comes out I'm probably going to switch to the Japanese version.
      Nice to see you, too btw.

    • @hernobleness
      @hernobleness 5 лет назад +4

      @@yum2735 Tbh I think the changes enhanced the experience for me. The whole point of localization is to make sure the world still holds familiarity with its target audience so they can identify with it, but maintain enough fantasy to still be magical.
      All the blatant Christianity references (as well as an lame name - by English standards - like Serpent) would've taken away a lot of the fantasy for me. The Latin country names would've been too obvious, the basic names like Paradise and God would've been too bland. Really takes an element of fantasy out of it, for me at least. At least in localizing, they for the most part kept the basic concept of the names the same -- each country still has the same sin, Ophion still comes from orphis (serpent), etc.
      As for the character names, I would've been fine with them staying the way they were. But once you change the country names, it doesn't really have sense to have someone named Meleph from a Scotland-inspired country.

    • @yum2735
      @yum2735 5 лет назад

      @@hernobleness I personally think a video game localization should be handled like a book translation, that is barely deviate from the source material.
      Translators have code of ethics, e.g. the American Translators Association Code of Ethics. Video game writing shouldn't be treated differently from other literature.
      In this particular case, the localized names don't even hold more familiarity than the original names.
      In fact, most of the time the localized names are just as unfamiliar to the average player as the original names, arguably even more unfamiliar considering JRPG fans are more likely to be Japanophiles than Philhellenists.
      The Seven Deadly Sins might be a common trope in video games and other pop culture, but I've honestly never seen their Latin names being used before; I don't even think that the names are obvious at all to the average player.
      Only the bland names like Serpent or Paradise are actually familiar to the average player, so by preferring the obfuscated names you're contradicting your previous statement that a localization should use familiar concepts.
      I wouldn't even call them bland seeing as they are the names typically associated with the concepts in Christian theology (in English).
      If they wanted to preserve the exotic nature of the English term "Serpent" in the Japanese language, they could've completely switched over to the Latin ("Serpens"), Greek ("Ophis") or even Hebrew ("Nahash") term for this specific Christian concept.
      The problem with the Scottish-inspired Mor Ardain is that Superbians don't have a distinct dialect in the Japanese version.
      Mor Ardain was basically scotticized just for the sake of having Scottish voice actors. Even if they spoke a Japanese dialect, that would just be a way to show their uniqueness, but their names clearly are very distinct from the rest of the cast and definitely not of a Japanese dialect.
      By the way, I'm actually compiling a list of name changes right now with a focus on location names.
      From my findings, just as I had noticed with Torigo/Torigoth before, most names aren't completely different.
      But like with name changes in other games, most are altered a bit (probably) to reflect familiar English phonotactics.
      Essentially, they Anglicize or Latinize most of the names a bit, especially the endings.
      For example "Rageruto" and "Ion" were changed to "Raqura" and "Iona" respectively most likely because the localizers felt that feminine names should end with the generic Latin gender marker "-a".
      Only some locations are completely changed (for no apparent reason), e.g. "Karamu" => "Olethro".
      Honestly, localization is the worst enemy of good world building. A Japanese game couldn't create a high fantasy world on par with, say, Lord of the Rings with its own languages and dialects etc. without having either a lazy or a butchered localization.

The Nopon Archsage seems to be the same from XC2 and even floats in a similar cloud sea. Alvis is a part of Zanza's trinity which could be seen as life repeating itself with Zanza remembering the Trinity processor and having a similar set up on the Bionis. This is basically The aegis explained pt 2

  • @gamezx
    @gamezx 5 лет назад +37

    A number of points after watching this:
    1. The way i see it, monado's arnt just like the aegis swords, monado's ARE the swords of an aegis. I'm of the certain opinion that rex's and malos's swords are infact monado's but are simply never called that name. Hence why mythra can do visions and malos can do monado arts, they're the same thing
    2. When questioning why alvis can remember everything but malos and mythra dont really remember anything before they where awakened or why alvis doesnt have nearly as many limitations as a blade, you need to remember that klaus said he took the 2 remaining cores and re-purposed them to manage the blades. Alvis is still in his original programing but mythra and malos had their programing changed, and so likely their data and limitations where altered from managing the zohar to simply managing the core crystals
    3. One thing to note about alvis is how he had multiple separate swords and could share his power between multiple people at the same time, not just 1. He gave a sword to both zanza and meyneth, and then a 3rd sword to shulk which we can assume is his true sword after fully bonding with him (the core animation in space). Now him having multiple swords at the same time isnt new cus mythra and pyra have different swords and they kept their 3rd sword separate too but it shows that blades (or just aegis's) can spawn perhaps many different weapons and give power to many people, not just 1
    4. A final thing about alvis which you could make a whole new video about. You said you didnt have anything linking alvis to the other xeno games, well there actually IS a few things linking him to them, albeit indirectly. Take a look at his "true form" in XB1 where he's a green light, that is the exact same design as the wave existence in gears. And the final battle against zanza takes place in the red waves of the UDO dimension in saga. Way i see it, when alvis went to the other universe he became like the wave existence of that universe, and you might well fight zanza in that universes version of the UDO dimension
    Infact now that i think about it, if what you're saying about alvis taking shulk and friends back to the original universe (which i never really thought of before), and the blade games take place before the events of gears (atleast in relation to whatever universe the zohar went to after XB2) then its quite possible to say that alvis is infact the wave existence inside the zohar in gears

    • @Neostar617
      @Neostar617 5 лет назад +4

      Pyra and Mythra don't have multiple swords, they have the one sword that has multiple forms. The third sword isn't literally in another location, rather the power to transform the aegis into the third sword is locked away there. Theres nothing physically there and it disappears as soon as Rex gets it.
      The game also makes it very clear that Blades can only bond with one driver at a time, so they can't just give multiple swords to different people at once.

    • @gamezx
      @gamezx 5 лет назад +3

      @@Neostar617 Pyra and mythra have their usual sword that rex holds but there is their 3rd sword which is sealed in the spirit crucible, the sword is physically there as addam says he's going to lock it away there. As for why it disappears, its quite likely it was reabsorbed into his half of the aegis core crystal and didnt come back out until mythra (the crystals other half) accepted it too. Morag does mention that blades can generate new weapons from their cores so is it really that much of a stretch to say they could perhaps make 2 or more at the same time? Or atleast that an aegis could seeing how its made clear they dont follow the same rules as normal blades (not returning to their core if their driver dies for one). Let alone an aegis like alvis who still has his full original programming and so seems to have far more ability than either mythra or malos
      As for blades only bonding with 1 person, again that rule was only stated for normal blades, it was never stated to be the case for aegis's, or again one with their full abilities like alvis does. And thinking about it further, even that rule doesnt exactly hold true cus nia gives rex her power even though he never bonded with her, even using both her and mythras power at the same time. You could say this is cus he's an aegis user or even part aegis (which only further illustrates that aegis's dont seem to have the same limitations as normal blades) or you could say that perhaps blades can share their power with anyone holding their weapon, but only bond with 1 person at a time (which would follow the whole alvis core animation in space scene). Though ofcourse you also have to question if switching drivers with the overdrive protocol even fits into the lore at this point...
      I think for now i'll go with alvis generated 2 different sword forms for zanza and meyneth lending them power but didnt bond with them. Then he bonded with shulk fully giving him his true sword and alvis's full power

      Pneuma however created new armor for Rex (yes I know that he doesn't take it off but she did create it somewhat) and created a wormhole for Siren to power up the final attack on Aion. Even her specials state that she can imagine her specials to be a certain element and it will be.
      That just makes sense to me however, and if I'm wrong then I'm wrong I really wouldn't mind it.

      Ontos is the only of the trinity core processors who didn't become a blade because Architect Klaus tells us he altered Pnuema and logos to operate as MANAGER BLADES. Because they were blades they take on the nature of their drivers so Malos inherited Amalthus' destructive nature and Pnuema inherits the traits of Addam and Rex. They also maintain the personality they gained from being raised in virtual reality. I can see how you assigned these roles lol

    35:20 Indeed also has a meaning, since ontos was the final decider between the opinions of logos and pnuema, and thus would be saying "indeed" to them, literally.

    Ok a thought just came to mind. Its certainly interesting to say perhaps alvis shifted the whole XB1 world to the original universe but this brings up a problem with X hinting that mira is the world shulk wished for. There are stuff like the nopon saying they've been there since the worlds beginning, mentioning "legendary frontier village" and "hom homs", saying "its tradition for nopon heroes to go beat up bad gods" and even had toy monados. Even the thing with the telethia superboss could only be there if it came as a leftover from the XB1 world
    The problem is we know the white whale took some years to travel from earth to mira, meaning its a different world from earth (also shown by its multiple moons). So assuming alrest was originally earth too (given the year and their usual timeline in their xeno games) it would beg the question how would alrest and mira be the same place?
    Sure the orbital ring broke apart at the end of 2 but did it pick up a few moons over the years? If so how does that account for the white whale in X, unless klaus's experiment did some dimension shifting across multiple universes which could explain the mysterious explosion in X which even the gangleon didnt understand
    Maybe alvis shifted them back to the original universe but on a different planet than alrest?

    Considering the fact that Alvis” key necklace changed into the shape of an Aegis’ core crystal (as some in the comments already mentioned), I can’t wait to come back to this video AFTER Xenoblade 3’s release to see how many more views this video has if your theories in this video are indeed legitimate. I can tell just how much effort you put into this three part series and I gotta say, very, VERY well done. You’ve helped my understanding of the Xenoblade universe become that much better even though I’ve played all the games.

    i think the reason klaus knew of his soon demise is the fact that meyneth had just died, killing galea, as that is what happens (if zanza dies, so will klaus in x2 universe)so he probably suspected that someone will very soon kill zanza.

    I also like to think that the ending events in XC1 and 2 was Shulk's universe merging back to Rex's universe, the original, but from Shulk's point of view looks like the universe is being recreated. The new continents that was being formed by the titans in Rex's world looks pretty similar to the land masses you see in the background of Shulk's recreated universe. That could be reaching but I feel like they made it intentional in XC2. And as for Alvis not looking or behaving more like a blade, that could be chalked up to him being in his own pocket universe separated from the influences of what Klaus was doing in his which was creating those particulates and core crystals and titans etc. I think Pneuma and Logos would have been just like Alvis but they were adapted to live in this new circle of life that Klaus made.

    It’s my own headcannon that ophion was onto’s artifice. It’s the same color as alvis’ clothes just as mythra and malos’ artifacts are, and ophion can be controlled by either of them unlike their own artifacts. Probably because the ontos core is gone so there isn’t any user for ophion to reject control in favor of.

    • @JP-zb3yb
      @JP-zb3yb 5 лет назад

      @@mobybrick2357 only one of malos artifice matches his color actually. One siren. (And half of aion). Ophion and artifice colossi dont match colors but malos had colossi and gargoyles and mythra had siren and ophion. Also, all artifices have green core except malos first siren. In general, the color scheming doesn't match actually with who it belonged to.
