    I think considering A's full quote "It has the nuance of 'the one at the beginning'. In this world, only I and Alpha can claim that honor.", I think this almost necessitates that a Moebius A doesn't actually exist. It almost sounds as if A is describing something of a fundamental law of Aionios in this quote, which makes it all the more curious why there would be a list of all the moebius including a moebius A.

    • @Sherkel
      @Sherkel Год назад +15

      I agree that's the reason, but it's not raw, cooked, or undercooked, it's mechanical. Z is a virus in Origin and the Consuls are said to be his avatars, implying the single-letter names are related to its functioning. A lot of graphical programs have a text lookup table; this was the entry point for Moebius to corrupt its execution.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@SherkelI mean, not really. Moebius is not actually limited to the single letter consuls. Every enemy in the the origin area is a moebius construct and you would expect them to be ascented characters, special character and numbers if that is how that works, but they have proper full names. Including unique monsters that literally have proper naming.
      It genuinely feels more like the single letter naming is a gimmick Z came up with for consistency. He and his avatars(X, Y) were created as single letters and the purpose of the consuls is to be a part of him, so they should follow that naming scheme.

    • @Sherkel
      @Sherkel 5 месяцев назад

      @@lpfan4491 Someone else who cares about this part of the story, finally! If Z had that kind of control over it, though, I think he would have made 500 Consul As out of spite. Instead, there isn't a single one, and he makes sure to keep every letter from B to W filled like his life depends on it. Consuls are more important than the other Moebius enemies because they directly correspond to his ~96% of control over Origin (25/26). You don't get the Chain Attack music back (which corresponds to the party's share of Origin power) until near the end of the battle, after destroying hundreds of avatars he created as shields. We also don't know if punctuation exists in Aionios (it's no use in a war) and it's definitely never shown. I could picture Melia+Nia+Shulk saying "alright, this should be fine for storing everyone's names".
      All in all, I'm led to conclude the single letters relate to Origin's programming in some way, especially given the existence of text lookup tables and drive letters.

  • @MJTRadio
    @MJTRadio Год назад +83

    I still think A being the theoretical missing A makes the most sense. They tell Matthew directly A just means beginning, and I took that to be their place in Origin’s programming. I could picture Irma asking about the naming thing, asking about A, being told, “A is occupied” and just assuming that meant a Moebius had the title.
    If we get deeper into the weeds, Z is also both mechanical in nature and he represents an inherent degree of creative sterility. None of the Consuls have names that go any deeper than the first letter of their original names and characters like Dirk flat out lost their battlefield titles to switch to the generic Consul titles when they became Moebius. So even if a human mind could have just chosen to name another character Moebius A anyway, Z might not be capable of doing so. The process could go something like this:
    Z naming the Moebius- I operate best with simple programming language. All my Moebius will be named from A to Z.
    *Z wants to create a Moebius A, but title A is already in use by the Ontos core in the system. Encounters something akin to a, "Word cannot give a document the same name as an open document" error and eventually just moves on.*
    Later, Irma- I see Moebius C, S, and J are all currently unfilled. What about A?
    X, Y, Z, or one of the non-original Moebius just repeating what they were told- A is occupied.
    Irma- Got it. *Labels A as a Moebius.*
    And for meta, because the meta value is always worth evaluating in Xenoblade these days, we, as the player, and handed the same mistaken preconceived notion as Irma was.

    Irma is slain during Fiona's Hero Quest, which can take place before Chapter 6, i.e. before the death of Shania.
    That means she was never around for Shania being Consul S, so whoever is Consul S on that list must have died during Irma's time as a Moebius.
    There's of course the chance that S was slain by the Liberators before they teamed up with Z, or by the City Founders after the event of FR, but I somewhat doubt that she'd keep a record of someone who died so long ago, or that she was even around back then.

  • @DittoMaster6
    @DittoMaster6 Год назад +30

    I always figured the listing of a Consul A was more a sign of respect towards A than anything else.
    A is someone who split off from Z's god (and shares their status as, in some way, being Ontos, the basis of Origin that gave birth to Aionios and Moebius) and overcame that god who sought only to save those who existed outside of the eternal flow, thereby preserving the endless now, and replacing Alpha as the core of Origin and avatar of Aionios. A effectively became Z's new god, and is presumably still alive within Origin by the start of the game, simply existing in stasis as they continuously uphold the world's existence as Aionios' avatar. It'd also make Z not technically lying about A existing, because A does exist, it's just that they're upholding the existence of the world itself in the most direct way of all Moebius. I can very easily see Z counting A as an honorary member of Moebius, given the context.
    Z may not have been there for the events themselves, but the main game's backstory for N shows he can still watch the world's events through the Ampitheatre, so he very well could've observed the whole thing. And if not, N could've just told him what happened during and after Alpha's final moments.
    And yeah "A" may not stand for anything like Alvis or Alpha would, but I think he wouldn't be unwilling to make an exception for the one who liberated him, upheld the endless now, and is adjacent to the one he considered a god.
    Plus "The first letter of A is A" is a technically correct sentence, so I don't think there'd be like. A rule against people with one letter names joining Moebius. That'd just be kinda silly.

    • @lpfan4491

      Imagine if Mio was just called M from the start and that was an actual rule. "Oh yeah, about our agreement...it turns out adding M is illegal, so you signed off on being mobius for nothing. As compensation, we'll give you a month every year as vacation time."

    • @AerynBella
      @AerynBella 10 месяцев назад +1

      I like this theory a lot too. And I don't think Shu says it's a list of Mobius, but rather a list of Consuls. Z could regard A as a Consul for the world of Aionios (as opposed to a Consul of a colony), as A holds Aionios together as an avatar and spirit of the world. If anyone is bold enough to ask Z why there is no Consul A, he can logically state the position is occupied.
      And, I don't even think it's a stretch that Z and N might lie and say Consul A or Mobius A exists to uphold our world and the Endless Now. That might ruffle the feathers of A, Rex, and Shulk (so to speak), but they would have the ultimate hope and faith that Alvis and A's vision will come true and that Mobius will be defeated so that Origin can carry out its intended design.

    Personally, I think Moebius A is supposed to be Ontos. All names attributed to the Ontos core's incarnations begin with the letter A, and the core was used as the crux of Origin, the genesis of Moebius itself. That would be a good reason why Z never filled the position even after Alpha became his enemy, as the position would still be symbolic of the power that created Z and Moebius to begin with.

  • @JuneNyaPurr

    Despite everything, I still personally think A is Moebius A in a metaphorical sense. I think the big thing is that Alpha, more than anything, actually acts more like an Ouroboros than a Moebius, working to destroy Aionios (along with all past life, of course) rather than linger in the endless now. That would essentially make A the Moebius half of Ontos, in the same way N is the Moebius half to Noah's Ouroboros, which plays into Future Redeemed's thesis of balancing the past and future. I think it's more of a meta thing, with the base game having every letter Moebius present but one, and then having a character in the DLC coincidentally named after that one letter who also happens to be a Moebius counterpart to an Ouroboros character. Obviously, A wasn't sneaking around behind Matthew's back to manage a colony or anything (there's a theory for ya), but it makes sense to me if it's a meta narrative choice

    The idea that they might be saving Moebius A for a future title is interesting, and not entirely out of the range of possibility. Takahashi has expressed that he always likes to leave some stuff open for each game so that he can follow up on it later. Xenoblade 1 teased "worlds and new life far beyond their known realm" and it was confirmed it was a pocket dimension later. Xenoblade 2 follows up on that and then throws in the possibility of actual gods existing, as well as name dropping Saviorites/Salvators in what seems to be a civil war over the Conduit. Xenoblade 3 takes the previous thing and adds more to it, continues teasing the existence of gods/a higher authority and possibly predestined divine fate, and also leaves questions like "what is that blue star heading towards Earth" and "who is Consul A."

    When A explained the meaning of their name I interpreted it as an oblique confirmation of A being a nickname without telling Matthew outright that their real name is something else ("Alvis"). It's just that the one they chose does has meaning in its own right as opposed to A picking some other pseudonym like "Al", or say, "Mary Magdalene".
    I think the identity of Consul A is supposed to be this A after all, albeit in an honorary sense. As the primary energy source powering Origin after FR, A is technically responsible for maintaining the continued existence of Aionios and the Endless Now, if only to give Matthew and his descendants some extra time to look for a proper solution to their overall situation. Also, A's uniform does look a little bit like the Consuls' clothes, possibly reflecting that.
    As for the "no racism" thing in 3, oh it's still there. It's just that this time the racism revolves around artificially-created national lines and ethnocentrism between two groups of "humans" rather than past games' focus on innate biological differences.

There is no Consul A for a reason, and there's also a reason why the missing Consul is A and not W or something. I'm not really convinced by any of the proposed theories, but this did ignite a renewed interest in who Consul A could be.
    That said, I know people aren't big Moebius fans, but I genuinely loved Moebius as a villain. What they stood for, how they were created and even their designs was all so cool. My only gripe was that there wasn't much to differentiate Moebius, especially considering some of them wore the same helmets and had the same monster form. But thematically it kinda makes sense that Moebius is one collective with similar looking people.

    Crackpot theory. Moebius A (if they do exist in XC4 for whatever reason), could be A HERO.
    While most Xeno games do end with at least 1 god dead and some radical change to the world, Moebius A being manifested as a sort of preserver would be a cool idea to work with, especially in contrast to whatever XC4 would do for it’s actual villains.
    It could even cause conflict if say A was a party member or general ally, but a Zanza style twist villian shows up who wants to create a perpetual existence, which Moebius would probably prefer on principle.
    Just ideas I thought I should put down

    If mobius' goal is to perpetuate the endless now, and A's sacrifice (along with Rex and Shulk) prevented Origin's destruction (allowing the endless now to continue), perhaps Z considers that to be worth the title of mobius, or at least to reserve the spot out of respect.
    Also, while I haven't played Xenosaga, if I recall correctly, a plot point is how gnosis are the result of the conscious of the deceased fearing integrating with the collective unconscious and if this process continues, risks the destruction of the universe. Similarly, mobius is formed by the fear of the consciousness of people within origin, and if it is not overcome, will lead to the annihilation events eventually destroying everything. The key to saving all is supposed to be in Lost Jerusalem, so if there is a tie in or merging with the Xenosaga story, XBC3 sets the state thematically along with earth reappearing in real space.

    I still think A from Future Redeemed could be Mobius A for one sole reason. Mobius' goal is to preserve the world they live in, Aionios. And what was Future Redeemed about? *Stopping Alpha from destroying Aionios!* A is likely a different kind of Mobius from the others: technically a "true" Mobius, but born from Ontos instead of the collective will of humanity, with Alpha being Ontos' Ouroboros.
    And this likely brings up the question of "How is Alpha Ouroboros if he's the villain?" Well the answer to that is that neither Mobius nor Ouroboros are strictly good or evil. Yeah, most Ouroboros are good and most Mobius are evil, but then there's Captain Triton: a member of Mobius who allies himself with Noah and the group to fight the other Mobius. Alpha being Ouroboros doesn't automatically make him good, he simply fits the Ouroboros desire to end Aionios. But his way of ending Aionios is not to separate it back into the two original worlds like what Noah's group was trying to do, it's to literally destroy Aionios and make a new world. Likewise, A wants to protect Aionios from Alpha just like how all the other Mobius try to stop Noah's group from liberating and splitting the world apart, but in A's case, it's not because he/she wants Aionios to exist forever, it's because he/she knows that destroying Aionios and the people living on it is not the correct path to the future.

    It’s been a while since I played the game but back then I thought A felt very Moebius without technically being one. A is a consciousness taken from its original “host” and retaining all memories from its past incarnations - just as the other Consuls/Moebius.
    So if there’s only a limited amount of Moebius operable at any given time (probably 26 - which could very well be explained by some limitations as on how Origin works) it might well be that the spot for “A” is just taken by an entity that isn’t Moebius but shares the same characteristics.

  • @SacrificAbominat

    I can see them bringing back Moebius like entities into the series because Moebius were already a call back to the Testaments and Wilhelm from Xenosaga. I get the feeling if they do something with the unused black knight from X we'll see something like them appear in X2 as well when and if that game ever comes out.
    Though my advice would be to not do 26 of them and limit them to maybe 5 to 10 next time with other prominent villains taking the stage as well much like Xenosaga did. The Testaments from Xenosaga were way more impactful due to their being less of them. Not to mention we get to see some of them as they were before they became Testaments as well which is part of the reason why N and M were interesting characters.
    I'm just waiting for L from X to turn out to be Consul L in X2 at this point.

    • @Iinneus

      Mobius in _form_ are Testaments, but in _concept,_ they're basically Gnosis! Which isn't an argument, just to say that they're extremely in line with many long-term Xeno concepts.

    • @SacrificAbominat
      @SacrificAbominat Год назад +4

      @@Iinneus I don't think it was explicitly stated but it was implied that the Testaments are Gnosis just with stronger wills that allowed them to keep their minds intact. It's why they manifest Gnosis forms when you fight them. Heck when you fight the Blue Testament in Episode 1 his battle icon is a Gnosis one. I don't remember if episode 3 did that for them though.
      Wilhelm is also basically the same as Z even to the point that he wants to keep the world in a perpetual cycle in order to protect what's left of the world. He's afraid of letting the world move into the future because he believes there is only the universe's demise in that future. Resetting the world over and over again is the only way he sees that the world can be preserved even if people live the same lives over and over again with little to no change each cycle. It's because the party is an anomaly from previous cycles that he is defeated much like the party of XB3 is an anomaly compared to the previous ones that tried to beat Z.
      I also think what makes the Testament more interesting is that each one is connected to one or more of the main characters and plays off their fears and insecurities from their pasts. This is the reason why some of the Moebius like N, M, D, and J work better, but others just feel like fodder by comparison. The concept works better if there's a smaller number of them, but if there's too many of them it weakens it. I think this is why people think Moebius are kind of weak villains even though N is one of the best villains in the entire series.

    • @Iinneus
      @Iinneus Год назад +1

      @@SacrificAbominat It's funny, the Xenosaga 3 Perfect Guide specifically mentions the whole "are Testaments Gnosis?" thing (the outcome being "only if we expand the definition"; it's in the entry for Abel's Ark).

    another great video! I personally subscribed to the idea of Alpha being Moebius A, something like Ontos being the beginning of the fear that eventually manifests as Z, the one who enforces the will of Moebius. As well as Origin coming from Ontos, making Ontos the origin of Moebius in that sense. I also think Moebius A's place is perhaps "taken" by A, and Z doesn't necessarily decide against creating actual Moebius As out of respect, but because he *can't*. because only A and Alpha can be the beginning. Or something.
    The idea that Moebius A is someone Z anticipates will appear in the future because Moebius are created backwards from Z to A is a really interesting one, but I think you could also interpret it as Z still being the final manifestation of Moebius' will. Maybe Moebius B-W "existed" in the form of the wills of people in Aionios before Z first appeared, which created strong enough emotions to manifest XYZ. and that's why Moebius B-W are taken from Aionios, because the wills of normal people are what made up those stages of Moebius in the first place.
    I hope that made some kind of sense, your videos always make wording this stuff look so easy!

    I always interpreted it as Alpha *AND* Alvis being Moebius A, depending specifically on which point in time you're looking at. Not only is the entirety of Origin built from the ground up around him, but Alpha basically is just Zarathustra - Xenoblade edition in terms of purpose and motive, and probably would be responsible for the Blade side of the time loop making sense if Xenochronicles actually winds up being a thing and both Ouroboros and Shion fail simultaneously.
    Then, you have Alvis hosting Origin alongside Shulk and Rex for like 900 years, meaning they're facilitating the endless now through mere existence. Even if A doesn't consider themself Moebius, That doesn't mean Z doesn't.

Likely while A isnt a moebius, A's existence sorta does psuedo take that spot and while yes A isnt necessarily short for anything, shulk does call A "alvis". They even had Z call Alpha/ontos his god establishing a connection. There is a reason imo they named A, A and it's for good reason

    Lugalbanda had a theory about the consuls symbolizing the Lacan alphabet, and I think it's interesting. In Lacan's Alphabet, the A has two meaning, small a and Big A (alpha/A parallel ig), both meaning "l'autre", french for the other, which symbolizes something that you cannot truly ever attain, the two being two variations of that, more or less.
    So to me there are 2 possibilities:
    - Since Origin, and thus Z, is powered by Ontos/Ousia, then A/Alpha may indeed be the consul A, or rather A (as an entity, like considering A, Alpha, Alvis, Ousia, Origin and thus in a sense Aionios, too, together) is above Z, and Z has consuls under his command. This makes Z either not willing to have a A, or Unable, as he's an opposite force to A, derived from A itself (again, A as an ontos package)
    - the other option is that there could have been, or even is a consul A, but it was never shown just to highlight that opposition and symbolism of the alpha and the omega, etc. While also maybe referencing the alphabet of Lacan if it is indeed a reference. Wouldn't surprise me at all of it was, actually.
    Also, I do consider X and Y to be creations of Z, since they look like they're the same "race" more or less. To me it's 100% Z recreating his logos and pneuma decision sources somehow, like Alvis had Zanza and Meyneth, and Zanza had his trinity, and Meyneth too probably (Egil/Vanea maybe? 🤔) so if you consider the other consuls, it's 26 lettes - A - X - Y - Z, if you consider Triton siding with ouroboros, then it's a total of 21 letters under Z's command, so 1 and 2 together which plays into the "bringing xenoblade 1 and 2 together" theme. Yeah, I guess I'm reading way too mich into that one 😅

    Considering it's A that's the missing moebius, which may or may not be alpha for one reason or another, it reminds of a different alpha from a different series.
    Alphamon of the royal knights from the Digimon series. Alpahamon is considered to be the leader of the knights and yet is often missing from their number unless something ig is going down. This earned him the title of "aloof hermit" and his place among the knights is called the empty seat.

This is why they use the first letter of their name. This include Alvis/Alpha, even though who wasn't a Moebius as not only his first name start with A, but foundation of Origin started with him. 1) I've thought about this for a while, and I think Monolith just knew they had a character named A planned for the dlc, and having another character named A in the main game would potentially be confusing so they did not include a Mobius A. As far as the list is concerned, I assume it was just missed because it was a very minor bit of text in a massive game, or they just knew people would expect 26 names from an organization themed on the alphabet and didn't worry about too much about it because it's fairly non-specific. The list could also be about Mobius candidates rather than actual members. There can't be more than 26 of them at a time, but they keep an eye on potential replacements.
    2) I'm fairly certain Cammuravi's colony was named Alpha, but I don't remember where I heard that. I think it was either the cutscene where we see him solo the no-name Kevsi colony or his duel with Ethel where she spares him, but it may have been random dialogue.
