Vincent was very funny. I saw his lecture in the early 1980s. He told lots of hilarious anecdotes about his movies and plays. He was a real raconteur!

@Hawk Holloway That's just it. You didn't have to look harder for it back in those days. It was front and center. I hear the same thing about music today. You have to dig for it. The good stuff should be dominant.
Joaquin Phoenix seems pretty cool. He's always polite in interviews even if the one interviewing him is insulting, but yeah it's rarer now.

Not only was Vincent Price and incredible actor he was also a collector of Fine Art and also a world-class Chef whom along with his wife wrote many cookbooks. Just saying!
Some of his cookbooks are actual works of art in my opinion. If you check it out I'm sure you would agree! Plus he sold those cool shrunken head toys when I was a kid just saying. I'll leave now.
Vincent Price is irreplaceable. Multi-talented. The 10 Commandments, Dr. Phibes, Edgar Allen Poe stories, Edward Scissorhands, Michael Jackson's Thriller, and a Sindbad movie show his versatility.
I have his cookbook - took me 10 years of scouring used bookstores to find one! Also, met someone who, as a child, had Vincent come and stay at her house, as her dad and Vincent were friends. She asked Vincent "why do you make those terrible low budget horror movies?". He told her, "They are what pay for my true passions - travel, art collecting and food!".
That absolutely brilliant, Vincent sure had a great comedy about him, this was so funny

I will always adore Vincent Price. One of my most favorite actors. His distinguished visage and that voice alone could delight, frighten, amuse, terrify...he was a gentle and gracious man, a classic gentleman whose kind is all but lost to us. RIP Vincent.
Absolutely agree with you. A darling, sweet man, naturally witty, incredibly knowledgeable about art, and most of all ready to make a joke against himself before anyone else did. I miss him and they aren't making any more like him.
The so-called roasts that go on today have NOTHING on those done by Dean Martin.
This is when roasts were adult but without the vulgarity of today’s roasts. Consequently writers relied on being clever.

It was still milder than some roasts I've seen. The Bob Saget on comes to mind, but then if you've seen his stand up it's no surprise.
Vincent was hilarious but every other joke was pretty vulgar. Nothing new there :)

I was a child in the seventies and watched this when my parents did, right or wrong, this was America and these people were the real deal, true talent and the ability to laugh at ourselves.......................what happened to us ?
I was born in 78 I've only seen the reruns and it's amazing every time all those old roasts. Your right it's so sad to see our society like this we have lost our sense of humor which is the innocence in all of us. "LONG LIVE THE GREATS" and may they all rest in peace.

This was an era where only the best of the best got noticed outside their home town.
The entertainment industry (and indeed, basically everything you saw in media at all) was absolutely minuscule by comparison to today, if you *weren't* incredible, you simply wouldn't be known more than an hour from where you lived, and certainly wouldn't be remembered.
The media infrastructure just didn't exist then that does today.
The Internet simply showed that most Americans (like literally any group of people) are incredibly average, and will happily watch other people being equally average.

Hard not to be sad that this caliber and honorable class of celebrity is no longer available to us. Instead we get rude crude and self imposed gods of all things social.

No, these Dean Martin roasts are weak. The jokes are lame. The Comedy Central roasts are actually funny.

Vincent Price had fantastic comedy timing. His delivery of these jokes was superb.
That's got to be one of the best damn roasts I've ever seen. Though I have to say that Dean Martin's snide comment at the end killed me. "Vincent almost didn't make it here tonight. His hearse broke down on the freeway." Love it.
The stars of yesteryear had distinctive voices. They gave many impressionists lucrative livelihoods. Nowadays there are no impressionists because all "stars" sound the same.

Watched this in 2019 and cried, where have all the good ones gone? They will never be replaced, their talent too great to be emulated.
Even in 2024 when some of the jokes aren’t relevant he’s still funny.

Vincent and Bette --- two of my most favourite actors --- I had the complete Bette Davis movie collection and lent it out to someone --- it never came back.

Vincent even mentions that time they worked together. So her saying they never worked together is in itself sort of a roast.

Bette Davies and Joan Crawford were feuding behind the scenes of "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?". Reportedly, Joan Crawford campaigned against Bette Davis getting an Oscar for this movie.
My guess is that Vincent Price made dig at Joan Crawford specifically to appease Davies.

I saw that movie in college, in a theater where they'd rigged the seats to vibrate.
my mom was a teenager then. she told me they would stop the movie halfway, turn off all the lights, and announce over the PA "the TINGLER is loose in the theater!"

I would have sworn it was true... if I hadn't looked it up and found out she actually based it on Roxy Collie Laybourne. Tilda is one of my fave actors. She did marvelous work in Susperia 🤘

That "classy" time only appears so classy because all dirt was
swept behind the curtain. It was a highly racist, homophobic and misogynistic time. Btw, all of these gentlemen's decency forms date from the same period as "women belong to the stove" and are based on the idea that women are weak and need male help and domination to live.

There's a nice little story about BD. While she was working on a film a British actor who admired her fiestyness heard that she liked to do puzzles. He presented her with a round puzzle. She looked at it and barked "Round puzzle huh? What are you trying to do to me? I prefer straight edges! ( adding sweetly) " But Thank You Kindly just the same"

I need to admit it... they had a lot more class back then. Kept it funny but very respectful. Today the stars look like they want to kill one another during these roasts.
I'm usually reluctant to read the comments when watching a video with actors or musicians from previous generations. Too many people going on about how much better everything was and how superior the older artists were to anything from today. It's kind of sad and pathetic, really, to be unable to see, hear and acknowledge the great talents of today. These older artists were great in their own right, and certainly don't need to be elevated by slagging what's out there today.
Can't help but think of MJ'S thriller when hearing Vincent's voice 😊😊
