    One of the best video clips I've seen so far. 5 of us did some 100m group shooting about 2 weeks ago. The following rifles took part, Anschutz Mod 54, Anschutz 1712, CZ MTR and Tikka T1X. Ammo used was Eley Match, Center X, and SK Rifle Match. 5 shot groupings ran from 0.906 - 1.712 inches. The 4 shot groupings ran from 0.545 - 1.712 inches. All the ammo and groups had a flyer. Good rifles with good shooters using relatively top ammo. There was even a weight and rim sorted shooter in the group. 4 of the 5 guys had groupings of less than 1inch.

    What I learn from this is how hard it is to get reliable data. Strictly speaking you should be shooting at least 5 groups of 5 at 50, 100, and 200 and ideally focus on one distance and shoot 10x. But of course, the time and effort required then become enormous. Unless one is a top competitor, it sounds like you live with limited info and make some compromises or else pay Lapua to test for you and then retest at home with a tuner. And probably still test your top 3 with at least half a dozen groups each.

      All rimfire ammo is going to vary lot to lot. Some lots of sk rifle match will rock out of your rifle and others will suck, same to be said about any rimfire match ammo. You are paying for more consistency which in a perfect world shows in your es and sd.

    I’ll be interested in your tuner video. I’ve watch some others tune a .22. Problem is the tuner looks like it’s helping, but if you start the process a 2nd time, it doesn’t tune at the same numbers. .22 ammo seems to have to much variation from shell to shell for a tuner to work well. Reloaders of center fire cartridges are much much more exact in building a cartridge and tuners work well for that. Bullets are weighed exactly, brass is trimmed exactly, primers are consistent, and powder charge is exactly the same. Tuners are also helpful if you have had your barrel cut, because the metal removed from the end is detrimental to accuracy. So adding back a tuner/break does help.

      Hi Scott! Funny you asked about this now. I just re-mounted an EC Tuner on my 22LR because my lot of Center-x wasn't performing as good as I had hoped with my new barrel. I did approximately the same experiment last month with my recently purchased Bergara B14-R with a 5-25X56 Vortex Strike Eagle scope. I used four ammo flavors on a dead calm day, 79 degrees, 99% humidity (gotta love Florida in July) and pressure of 30.2 inches Hg. The chrono results are from a Chrony Beta Master. Of course, I'm different shooter with a different rifle and ammo lots on a different day in different weather conditions than you had so this is just another set of data. The SD's and ES's are for all rounds shot. The groups are an average for the best 4 of 5 shots over five groups except for the Tenex which was only two groups. The groups were shot with a bi-pod and rear bag off a bench.
    Ammo # of rounds SD (fps) ES (fps) 100 yards (inches) 200 yards (inches)
    SK Rifle Match 50 8.65 47 0.82 1.37
    SK Long Range 30 7.30 40 1.10 1.65
    CCI Std. Veloc 50 9.30 58 1.05 1.17
    Eley Tenex 40 7.00 32 1.05 1.02

    ...the only issue I found with SK Match @100 yards was vertical spread after 6+ rounds, the first shots 5-6 were .75" - almost all touching - but then they would start shooting high. I repeated it a few times from a cold bore. Could be heat retention characteristics of my heavy barrel but I've found a brand of Eley that isn't affected, so I use those with great results!

      Hi Mark! Man, good timing. I just released a "four month follow-up" on my Vudoo (ruclips.net/video/moWhzluxfok/видео.html) and after sending it in to the Lapua testing center (and after finding out I had a bad firing pin and getting that replaced), the center found the best match for the rifle was Center-x. Now, they DO NOT test SK ammo (even though they own SK), but I have changed to Center-x for matches. I would have no issue running SK for practice and am actually doing that now for short range practice (inside 200 yds). I like Lapua/SK ammo, mostly due to their lubrication and I don't like changing that across ammo...That's just me. Hope this helps and check out my honest 4 month update if you have a vudoo. Im curious how you had feeding issues with eley especially since the vudoo is a controlled feed and there is no projectile ramp.
    If your shooting prs / nrl that silver bullet is priceless when trying to spot misses and bullet flight.
    Good video

    • @The4GunGuy
      @The4GunGuy  2 года назад

      Hi Pursuit!! I had feeding issues due to the poor design of the polymer magazines...everyone knows about it. You have to shave them down to make a feed ramp and that's where the feeding issue began with the flat nosed ELEY Tenex. The ELEY Match ammo simply will not eject from my rifle...period. Don't know why but not going to try to figure it out. I only use Lapua/SK now and everything is fine.

    • @PursuitofAccuracy
      @PursuitofAccuracy 2 года назад

      @@The4GunGuy The vudoo is chambered for lapua / sk and the eley tends to have a thinner rim thickness and perform better in a shorter chamber.
      I have to reduce headspace by around .002 - .003 to get eley to extract reliably in my lilja barrel if im going from a center x headspace.
      I would contact your closest lapua test center and get that vudoo to them to lot test. Save you a lot of money and heartache. You can get a case or two of whatever shoots the best and be done with it.

    • @The4GunGuy
      @The4GunGuy  2 года назад

      @@PursuitofAccuracy Way ahead of you my friend! Barreled action goes to the test center in September. I just did a video on the EC Tuner mounted on the rifle and Center-x came out very well as did SK Match...But at distance (250+) it looks like I'm going to stick with Center-x. I agree on the ELEY Match issue and have since sold all my ELEY Match...Just don't want to mess with it and even though I have some Tenex, I just don't trust it in a match environment. I do have to say that with the issues I and others have had with the magazines feeding and/or not seating properly, I have been a bit disappointed in spending this kind of money on a rifle that still needs to be "tweaked" to function properly. I mean, the mag issues are design issues, not ammo issues. And when someone pays this much for a rifle, they shouldn't have to shim the mag for things to work. I know this is the case with many rifles (my 6.5 CM included), it's just more pronounced with the Vudoo. Still love the thing, just wish those same tolerances used in the chamber and the bolt were there in other areas.

    • @PursuitofAccuracy
      @PursuitofAccuracy 2 года назад

      @@The4GunGuy Yeah I can totally understand that. I shoot against and vudoo's and rimx all the time and they always seem to have feeding issues at one point or another in the match. The ole cz isn't a vudoo but it also has never had a single feeding issue so there is a bonus point for that. I went earlier in the year to lapua in Ohio and had a great time with Luke.
      I have tried a few tuners but have also found that the right ammo doesn't need the tuner and I try to eliminate as many variables as I can from the performance of the rifle and me. I would be constantly messing with the tuner trying to keep it dialed in.....end of the day the target sizes are big enough you don't need a 1/2 moa gun to win matches......the indian needs the work not the arrow.

    • @The4GunGuy
      @The4GunGuy  2 года назад

      @@PursuitofAccuracy Ha! So true! I just tested the EC Tuner on my Vudoo and basically went from a 3.6" vertical spread at 250 yards to a 1.8" vertical spread...So happy about that. I agree with the Indian comment. Shot a PRS match this past Saturday, had a stage with targets at 302, 384 and 410 yards off a 3 sides roof prop. I missed all three 384's! And I just recalibrated my updated load, ringing 900 yard steel with ease. Man was I hot after missing that "chip shot". But, I'll be up there this weekend and promise you I'll send about 50 rounds at those three targets off that rooftop!

      Hi EJ! I fired 10 rounds of Tenex to settle the bore on THAT ammo (wax based), then 10 rounds of x-act to settle the bore on all the others ("snot" based) since their lubricant comes from the same lubrication batch (SK and Lapua), so you only need to settle the bore once with them. Thanks for watching!

  • @FlyRiverFly
    @FlyRiverFly 2 года назад

    Love the data driven approach. First off, I think ES is misleading as one flier or a strong gust of wind can sku that data significantly and rimfire, even the best rimfire ammo, still tend to have fliers or wind induced ES. Next, I have found that while rifles ted to prefer specific ammo, I rarely see poor accuracy at 100 yards get significanty better at 200 yarrds which we saw with Eley Tenex and Midas +. I do think that with Rimfire, at 100 and 200 yards, little in the way of meaningful analysis can be done with limited groups at those ranges as wind, ammo (lot) and user play a significant part role in the overall results. Typically I would like to see 4-5 5 shot groups at each range and then aggregate the numbers for each ammo by range. I realize that is expensive though

    • @The4GunGuy
      @The4GunGuy  2 года назад +1

      Hi FlyRiverFly! Thanks for the great input! My ES values are based on the velocity at the muzzle as measured by the MagneetoSpeed, so those won't be affected by wind or fliers. BUT, I totally agree that if we were looking at the ES of the impacts at the target (since ES can be measured against any population of values and not just velocity as you point out), those other variables can affect it quite a bit. I have a local indoor range that goes out to 100 yds and may revisit this analysis someday in that environment. I've since sent the rifle to the Lapua testing center and they found the best LOT of Center-X for this rifle based on their testing, so I'm running that now.
