Jesus Christ, it makes me so happy when these guys actually APPEAR in their own videos.
Appearring... in shadow and black and white..... 😆 we'll take what we can get
The videos they don't appear in are so creative and fun, though. They've been around a long time. It's good to mix it up so things don't get stale.
Ty!! If they only knew how much I was rocking out to them on my way to high school and getting my ass kicked they would be proud to see me in my videos too
I love seeing the Johns in music videos. I don't care that they're old, I wanna see their old asses sing me weird songs about hovering sombreros and creative brontosauruses.
..and then being skinny again like a ♩♪ bronto ♫♬ saurus ♩♪ bronto ♫♬ saurus
I remember reading a review of a TMBG album once that marveled that one of the songs on it was "about an actual end of an actual relationship," as if TMBG normally only did songs about prosthetic foreheads and such, and thinking "what the hell, like a quarter of their discography is breakup songs."
Flans does a lot of those.
Best of em are Narrow Your Eyes, Unforgotten, Best Regrets...
@@L0REN0R2Z0RR0 They'll Need A Crane, I've Got A Match, I'll Sink Manhattan, Lucky Ball And Chain, Twisting...
All Time What, anyone??
@@aceynickel all time what is about weird words (like "soltify") for me 😄
Not just breakup songs, but incredibly specific and poignant and catchy breakup songs.
TMBG's harmonies are as distinctive as the Beach Boys' or the Beatles' or Queen's.
YES!
Definitely. When they sing together rather than have a track where one of them overdubs their own harmonies... those are my favorites.
I was going to say that it doesn't really sound like John L on the harmony, it sounds like John F doing his own harmonies. I've found that to be true a lot of the time for both their songs -- that they are singing their own harmonies -- for a long time. I wonder if it's true? Of course they sing harmonies on one another's songs live, so it's not like they can't do it. Maybe it just makes recording easier.
@@jrpipik In this particular version of the song, JL does do the harmonies but they do record individually a lot of the time and do their own harmonies.
@@evegasse6999 I'll take your word for it!
I love so so much when the Johns harmonize together instead of over themselves (which I only love lol)
Yeah, it's fantastic either way. But it is pretty special when the sing together. Especially with this arrangement where they keep alternating the high and low parts between each other. And I love the trend of them doing live/alternate versions for the videos. This one is the shit. Best one of the lot by far. I LOVE the style!
The album version seems to be Flans harmonizing with himself, and it's taking me a lot of listens to tell that. They're so in tune.
When they start singing ah de a de a de a you can tell they sound almost exactly the same, its really cool
This is totally a Flans vocal tune even though it sounds like Linnell. Only John harmonizing with John here, not John harmonizing with John.
Obviously.
The most amazing thing about They Might Be Giants is that you can take a song from a very recent album, a song from one of their first albums when they still didn't have a full band, and they would be so very different and yet so very much similar. They've grown as songwriters and collaborators, but that magical vision they put into their songs still resonates no matter what song they're doing. They deserve to be so much bigger than they are, which is a shame.
Quite pleased they aren't much bigger, they still feel like just mine. That band that nobody else is into that's just yours. That's what keeps these guys so special.
I don't think Linnell would like to be any more famous than they are already
@@BVK_LastPlace true words lololol
Most bands get worse with time. They might be Giants is extremely consistent and it's one of the things I love about them
Don’t worry , anybody who knows anything about music knows exact how important TMBG is.
I've never been so early.
_"By the time you hear this it will be too late"_
Nevermind
Marty just always looks like he's having the time of his life. I love that guy
Flans and Linnell’s voices just sound so good together!
Me listening to the album version:
This is a breakup song.
Me listening to this version, watching John and John swap harmonies and do their weird little choreography:
This is a love song 😭😭😭
“ahh-dee-ah-de-ah-de-aaa”
Seriously, loved this song right as I heard it on the album, and I love this performance even more. Thanks for the amazing music all these decades.
LUUUUKE
God this video is SO good. Makes the other "just the band playing" videos seem so boring in comparison. The black and white, the shading on all of them, the absolute BANGER of a song. This video rules and I hope to make something half this good one day. Can't wait to see them live again!
What other "just the band playing" video has a suitcase instead of a bass drum for a song about moving out?
@@JeffLavezzo I didn't notice that, that's brilliant.
I love seeing everyone! Seeing how happy and into the music Dan, Dan, and Marty are is always such a treat and reminds me of seeing them live!
I thought the same thing watching Dan, Dan and Marty!
That’s Dan, and that’s Dan, and that’s Marty on the drums to complete the band. I’m John and he is also John.
They need another Marty.
And at 1:30, as with many TMBG music videos, comes the age old question: "what are they doing with their arms?"
But in all seriousness: Great work as always!
🤣 I never really stopped to ask. I just sort of accepted it and moved on.
This is like a spiritual sequel to Cloisonne; in that it also has a black and white performance video and an album/studio version!
I've been thinking of it as the other side of All Time What
OH MY GOSH. They manage to shock you with so many new things while also keeping a sound that automatically makes you think “They Might Be Giants” its crazy
I love Linnell's twisted darkness, but this is Flans down to a T - and shows the songmagic he's crafting. Much more forward and straight to the point. They go so well together - they might indeed be Giants! Big love!
Wow, this is so good. I've lost track of these guys but they are still doing the work. One of my greatest memories is shaking John L's hand after one of the kid shows in Chicago many years ago and talking with him for two minutes. What a humble, genuine man. They bring joy.
Get back on track by listening to their I Like Fun album from 2018! It's some of their best, most brilliant output since the 90's.
One of the most beautiful TMBG songs of all time. Brings a tear to my eye.
I like getting older with you two, been ardent for a third of a century now, looking forward to the next trimester
and now you’re even older.
and now you’re older still.
It really is nice to age with them
Speaking as someone in the 60-something age bracket, it has been an absolute pleasure and privilege having these guys play the soundtrack of my life since I first heard Birdhouse on the radio in 1990.
I love how much fun Dan, Danny and Marty look like they're having. I love 'em, they should be in more videos.
RIP Marty Beller's right leg.
The amount of love for this band that swells up in my heart while watching this and reading the comments is just…..too much!! I can’t stand it! Long live tmbg
Without a doubt, they might be giants are my favourite music discovery. I really hope to get the chance to see them live! I’m from the UK and listening to their music means so much to me everyday. Play On⚡️
Like a fine wine, TMBG just gets better with age. Most excellent job.
Saw them play this song in Asheville last Friday. I must have been jamming out to it harder than anyone else in the crowd. It was one of the happiest moments of my life.
Keep rockin', Johns!
I've listened to over 20 TMBG albums, and I think Book is my favorite. I don't know how, but they keep getting better! This song and video are both awesome!
Holy wow. I love their tight harmonies so much
I just love seeing them sing together.
The first time I heard this song, I swore it was a cover. I knew I must have heard it before. It is one of those songs that seemed like it must have always existed. It's just so simple and so perfect.
I love these guys so much 🥺 I got to grow up listening to these two and they taught me so much emotional intelligence through their lyrics. I remember being nine and singing Hopeless Bleak Despair without understanding the lyrics AT ALL until one day when I found out when I left my house and it followed me home. They taught me the bittersweetness of life. Thanks guys!
^^ good reason to get into parkour!
o wait that's hovering sombrero. same album tho.
John Flansburgh and John Linnell have beautiful voices.
The world needs more TMBG.
Seems like just the other day a birdhouse was in my soul, and while no one was the boss of me, been feeling like a real person man.
Heck, I still want a rock.
@@joshuaeverett9887 I'm still having a wonderful time, but I'd rather be whistling in the dark
@@joshuaeverett9887 I want a prosthetic forehead. But then, doesn't everyone?
@Schwarz Bruder Sorry you're feeling like a person man. That sucks.
@@joshuaeverett9887 and a string to wind around it, man…
I'm quite early this time.
Rather wonderful.
Thank you, John.
Thank you, John.
Thank you thank you thank you Johns and the whole TMBG crew! What a fantastic surprise to see your lovely faces accompanying this absolute banger of a song. Can't wait to hopefully see you on tour in the UK when all is well and safe again
You may laugh now at this song thinking it has nothing to do with you, but watch when you get your heart broken. *_This song will be both in your playlist and in your feelings._*
I'm glad to see these guys back at it. I remember listening to the in my garage back in 1989. They are as relevant now as they were then. Probably even more so. Good work.
I have been listening to these guys since Ana Ng came out and I am so grateful for everything they have done. Now all my kids love them as well.
This might be one of their best songs. Not just on the album, but ever.
BOOK scratched so many itches for me. They got to perfect a lot of musical ideas that they've been trying to perfect for a long time.
Sad it’s been both this long seeing how these two are doing and it’s been a couple years now. Miss you the first band I decided to like as a kid in the 80s
[LYRICS]
By the time you hear this, it will be too late
By the time you hear this, I'll be far away
Moving out at the break of dawn
Moving out past the Guns and Pawn
All of those times that I missed you
But you weren't missing me
You called it self-improvement, but I had other words
Half-asleep and brainwashed like shaking off a curse
You at night by the bonfire blaze
Dancing there in the moonbeam rays
All of the times that I warned you, but you ignored my pleas
You were warned with my pleas
Like a scold were the pleas
You were warned
Haircuts in the mirror now
ATMs for a twenty-dollar bill
Knife a pan, an empty can
Hallway bulbs and peepholes covered up
By the time you read this, it will be too late
By the time you read this, I'll be in another state
Singing out the dials spinning round
Singing out with cicadas now
All of the times that I warned you, but you ignored my pleas
You were warned with my pleas
Like a scold with my pleas
You were warned
Ah, di-ya, di-ya, di-ye
Ah, di-ya, di-ya, di-ya, di-ye
Ah, di-ya, di-ya, di-ye
I'd never have been so happy to have been left by my lover. What a tune.
This is such a "get up and go" song for when the protagonist has the sudden flash of motivation to do the thing.
Feels good.
"Do the dumb things I gotta do...touch the puppet head"
No matter how many times I hear it, I’ll always be too late
Love that all snare drum section. TMBG has always had such a creative touch with spare arrangements, and this is just another great example. Also, love their choreography throwbacks to those first couple albums.
This is awesome, probably my favorite track on the new album so far.
No other band makes me smile like TMBG. My favorite all time band for the last 25 years! Much Love! Can't wait to see you at the (much delayed) Flood show in Seattle!
I'm so jealous! They aren't coming anywhere near us this tour :-/
Marty is always having the best time! ❤
Awesome. Gives me real "Narrow your eyes" vibes
Favorite band of all time. That will never change.
This never happens to me but I've listened to this song over a dozen times in the past week
that rate's pretty high but maybe happened to me with Why Does the Sun Really Shine/Mrs. Bluebeard
Great song. Great lyrics. We've all been there.
tmbg dropped a whole new music video while I’m at school and… yeah math can wait :)
Ah wow that's amazing they are still making original music and records! After all those years ever since 1980. They've still got it
It's great to see them starring in their music videos again!
These guys are just making banger after banger, impressive.😁
Danny's bass lines are great in this tune. Listen to the studio version, and boost the low end.
Johns in da video
What da johns doin?
After a long time listening to both versions, I think I like this one a little more
Dial a songer, long distance dial a songer, grounded for ling distance dialing songs dialer, sharer of dialed songs by singing to friends at school, dial a songer. Phone calls without answers are never a thing anymore, unless you like talking to machines. And we talk to phones presumably smarter than most, devolving that delicate sense of communal living. Does the moon reflect or collect? Do i see this song or.listen? Those who might be gargantuan, those who might be implicit. Public comment added.
This is the mysterious clip with clues on Instagram...
Wonderful 👌
So grateful for this video, thank you :) love the choreography
This whole album is fantastic.
I think it would be cool if They Might Be Giants recorded Flood and Lincoln with the band
Definitely going on my playlist
BROOOOOOOO NEW JOHNS JUST DROPPED
Here Marty, you dropped this 👑
Awesome video for this one - and I love how much fun the band is having.
YAAAAAYYYYYYY another music video!!! And a fantastic song!!! And we get to see their beautiful faces :D
And it's a live performance! (I think)
@@ThreadBomb yup!
You’ve been such a huge part of my life for almost 30 years. I love you guys. Keep rocking ❤️
masterpiece
Love this new track.
My god this is even better. And it's so rewarding to see Marty & the Dans play. The whole band loves making great music and we all win.
Another great song!
i love that this feels so new yet so tmbg. 😭❤️
Raise that elbow to the sky, people!
Love the song's simple elegance, which is reflected in the austere video. And I'm so happy that John Linnell's recently acquired Latin is finding its way into TMBG's lyrics!
How is every preview track so good though
0:16 - someone realized they forgot to activate the Linnell.
great video, love to see everyone, especially weinkauf on the hofner!
Fresh, new, and yet still unmistakably TMBG. ♥
Just like the old times… a great song like always!!
Such a great duo & band. Great writing, top performing! Just gotta love these guys!
Wow
Just wonderful!!!
Love forever. Also major birdhouse vibes from the hands at the end
SSuch a good video. So low-key and yet intense, and beautiful use of Dan, Danny, Marty.
I love you guys so much. I love this song, I love this version of the song, I love this video and your weirdo dances. Love love love.
Fabulous song! And choreography too. :)
Excellent as always
The twin quasars of rock have still got it.
This is what life's about. Man it feels good.
Perfection!
This is awesome.
Awesome harmonies, guys. Saw your show back in 2018 in Ottawa ... in the before times - fantastic. 👏
Excellent!
This is SO GOOD
glad to see one of the best bands still making music.
...SO THIS IS TMBG OFFICIAL YT CHANNEL I KNEW IT! 😂
It's marked official
@ChrissMari oh 😆
It doesn't show on chrome mobile for some reason, still happy I figured this out haha I was so confused 😄
Thank you TMBG for being you!
