How tf did this have to get reuploaded I swear you just posted this damn RUclips💀
@@Flightscurryshoes The original upload got age restricted, so he had to reupload and censor it.

Fun fact: all of the characters were named after actual prisons and each character's personality was modeled in some way after the prisons' reputations. Quentin for example, was named after San Quentin which at the time was known for being a violent place.
So which prison was an idiot savant?
@@christophernichols4224 Kazan was named after the Kazan prison in Russia. Apparently, it's a mental institute.
@@stevenguitink5947 oh, fair enough
Kazan - Kazan Prison
David Worth & Joan Leaven - Leavenworth Prison (US Military prison. Was maximum security but downgraded mid 2000s to medium)
Quentin McNeil - San Quentin State Prison and McNeil Island Corrections Center
Dr. Helen Holloway - Holloway Women's Prison
Rennes - Centre pénitentiaire de Rennes (women's prison - France)
Alderson - Alderson Federal Prison Camp (women's prison - West Virginia, US)
@@BerserkedI was just about to ask, thank you!
Just like the escape artist was an FU to the audience and meant to subvert expectations, the same goes for Quentin. Heroic, hardball, action cops were extremely popular protagonists in the 80s/90s (think Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis) so going into this movie audiences think "oh this guy is the main character and is therefore someone to root for". We even get a little bit of intended sympathy for him when he tells the group that his wife divorced him and he doesn't see his kids.
However, the further along into the movie we go the more his violence starts to really show and he gets called out on it, mostly by Dr. Holloway who even suggests that his violent tendencies are WHY his wife left him and he doesn't get to see his kids (look up 40% of cops lol). Worth also has a line where he practically tells the audience that Quentin isn't a Hero character, “Not all of us are conceited enough to play hero.” We even are given a clue that he's going to be a villain when he is introduced as he literally has blood on his hands, suggesting he ran into another person and killed them as well.
I LOVE Quentin's character in this movie. His actor does an incredible job at playing someone who you genuinely believe is the glue holding the group together, possibly even the protagonist of the film, only to slowly be revealed as the bastard that he really is. Quentin is the kind of person that you both love to hate, and hate to love.
He is an awful person but great character. There is no Cube without Quentin.
He was definitely the best part of the movie for me. The actor deserves all the praise for his performance
I mean nowadays the twist is kinda obvious from the moment he says he's a cop.
Lmao I'm so confused. A twist? From the moment we meet Quentin he's an aggressive asshole. There was never a moment in which I thought, "This guy is the protagonist," cause he so obviously was a piece of shit.
@@TheBonkleFox LMAO
I remember during one argument, Halloway accusingly whispered to Quentin that he "likes them young" or smth along that vein, and that really gave me wicked whiplash like, wait was I just rooting for this kind of protag??? And then he let go of her and hand and went completely downhill from there and damn, the storytelling in this movie was really something
Watching again for that algorithm, you know how it is.
As I said before though, I am glad GG is taking a look at those older kind of niche cult classic horror movies.
And I absolutely would love to see GG look at the sequel. It's... something.

This movie always gave me a ‘I have no mouth, And I must scream’ vibe. I remember turning it on one night thinking I’d fall asleep but I ended up staying up all night, fully immersed 😂 and the little details really contribute to the drive of the plot as opposed to troupes or half-assed concepts being tossed in to keep engagement. I was pleasantly surprised.
You’re the first person I’ve seen reference this short story lol
I found it after reading Johnny Got His Gun
Definitely
We really like the 90s game adaptation! The author is a very good voice actor and fits AM perfectly!
Fun fact: their surnames are from famous prisons from around the world. Great video GG
The prisons were also chosen deliberately, due to their purpose or specialisation
As a mathematically challenged individual this movie is terrifying though as a tween I was more terrified that there was no food... Get KO'd by a cube or die of hunger, or dying of hunger then getting KO'd by a cube. Scary.
Cube is underrated, it's a fantastic movie. Cube 2 and Cube Zero were.. they exist. That's the nicest thing I can say lol Worked at Blockbuster and recommended Cube so much
I hate that movie, i saw it when i was 7 or 8 years old and it terrified me for years !!
i used to work for blockbuster before it closed too :) i used to like suggesting Triangle for hiddem gem horror :) i miss blockbuster! best first official job i had
i just realised you used to recommend cube and i reccomended triangle and they are both horror movies named after shapes lol
Lol but they are so great in their shittyness I do a marathon like once a year of them it’s fun
That's really cool! I miss Blockbuster and video rental places in general - used to run around and pick out VHSs/DVDs and videogames there and Hollywood Video as a kid. I have the luck of my local library being able to rent out DVDs (and I enjoy the library in general), but it's the only movie rental place I know around these days unfortunately... 0_0
The tense shoot is mentioned in the video, but one little nugget I remember (I think) the director saying is that the actors were particularly tetchy on days when they filmed in the red-lit cubes. My wife thinks that it's entirely expected but I find it quite fascinating that colour influenced their moods so much.
If I had a nickel for everytime mista gg reviewed this movie I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice

@DOTcomm i know, i was in the middle of watching it! Had to pause it, when i came back, wasnt happening. So i shall watch this reupload.
I like to think that Quentin caught Holloway just so he could look into her eyes before he dropped her and that's evil af but I gotta respect his commitment to portraying his cop character.
😂😂😂😅
Right? lol i was like oh the cop is the worst person here I'm shocked
Given that Holloway previously accused Quentin of being abusive towards his wife and that's why she divorced him (and why he didn't get custody of the kids), it's hinted that he's a psychopath who enjoys violence and watching people suffer.
@markiemark2498 the past used to play cops and the police force as the heroes and people who go for justice, so at the time this was a twist; nowadays it's not a surprise due to people now knowing how cops actually are

According to the lost media wiki there was an alternate extended ending that was cut, testimonies from certain theatrical screenings of the film, the scene in question was shown; it allegedly depicts Kazan walking out onto a beach (or a cliff's edge, depending on who you ask) on a purple alien planet, overlooking an endless ocean, as mechanical grinding noises are heard. As he turns around, both his footprints and the cube's exit itself vanish; some have also reported that the sky is then shown, full of exoplanets.
There was also apparently a deleted scene (or only scripted scene) where the group find some alien food or alien like candy wrappers in one of the cubes.
While I'm not sure if any of these are actually real, part of me wishes I could see some of it if it was.
I'd want to see the extended ending just out of curiosity, but I'm glad it and the alien food were deleted. The mystery is what makes it great, erasing all that with "it's just aliens" would've ruined it.
I'd say it's less the mystery that makes it great and more the fact that it is kind of explicitly stated to be completely meaningless. Having some kind of reveal would kind of ruin the symbolism there around bureaucracy, corporations, and governments. Nobody involved has any idea of the full picture, but they still perform their duties despite being ignorant of what the meaning or purpose of any of it is.
I mean, that would presume that aliens had a very similar numbering system (the numbers on every room that are a key part of the plot) or that they know how humans evolved to adopt such system and can replicate it for whatever reason. It makes less sense than the cube being a human made "thing".
I think I remember actually seeing that
I'm obsessed with these series. The Cube is one of those amazing indie horrors that not everyone knows.
Yes! This is one of my favorite movies, awesome to see you covering it! Just one thing: Worth didn't build the cube, he was an architect who designed the outer shell and wasn't told what it was for.
Hypercube made me piss with rage, which would make for a really fun review video. Cube Zero gets a lot of flack but I will defend it as it's so bad it's really good.
My boyfriend just recently had me watch this, so the timing is perfect. I’ve never rooted more for a character to die than I have for Quentin.
Watch the Mist next. You'll want one of those characters to die more.
I'm bewildered that people think Quentin turning out to be a bastard is a "twist" when he is clearly an overly aggressive piece of shit from basically the very beginning
@@Mandy-ve2sh the walter effect. if a shitty character is framed as the main character a lot of fans think they are absolved of all wrong doings since they did it as the main character.
@@Ven0m.snak3 maybe it's just me, but I never felt Quentin was getting framed as the main character. Leaven was very clearly the main character from the start and Quentin was obviously an aggressive asshole that wants to control the people around him (not to mention just kinda rapey?). Walter White had an arc where you could see the parts of him that would come together to eventually make him a monster, but at the start he seems like a decent guy and it's really only in retrospect that you can truly pick up on all the little ways they setup his spiral. Quentin from the moment we meet him is just so clearly a bastard. Watching this video I literally out loud said, "Did you leave the room?," cause I couldn't fathom how this guy thought Quentin was a good dude. Looking it up apparently the creator of it did intend Quentin to be a bait and switch, but man he failed
I was rooting for him to make it to the end 😔😔
I really enjoy that Worth and Leaven are foils of each other who both eventually have overlapping character arcs and basically form the protagonist of the movie together when Quentin goes nuts, because their last names read together form Leavenworth, the prison in Kansas indicating thematically that they're two halves of the same character or two halves who can solve the Cube together. Every character has the name of a famous prison, but theirs are the only ones which are split between two people.
GG's experience with films of "i remember watching it but i'm beggining to think i never did" is really my vibe.
I'm rewatching.
While the acting is not the best, I love the shot on Holloway's face when she goes from relief to realization and horror. What an amazing moment.
The acting gets the job done (and Worth is legitimately great).
mista posting so much is a literal blessing to humanity

the reupload! glad to see it back up.
i still stand by the fact that i'm absolutely chuffed that you covered cube especially because how they handle the plot points, the character development vs degradation, and the little nuances (like making kazan an autisitic savant and his ending being the most unknown) in the movie seems like something you would enjoy.
i'm so glad that you consistently talk about the little background facts that you learn about the movies you cover. they did maurice so dirty during that filming and, honestly, he was a huge part of what carried that movie. watching quentin slowly lose his mind from the power and the mental fuckery that come with being confined to one space is so well done. another fun fact about the cube series is that every cube had a different director and the differences are very obvious, imo. also, there is a prequel movie that talks about the start of the cube and there's a recent japanese version of the first movie in the series that came out 2 years ago.
and again i say, the braids you got in this video are still so fire. they look so good you. still leaning into that tío energy and i live for it.
Shame you had to censor and reupload, RUclips's a bitch :(
Just wanna add back my comments from the last time:
Cube is such a great film that's really rewarding when you delve deeper into it and also on re-watches. For example, the characters names can all be related to names of prisons, and the corresponding prisons give insight into the characters. Quentin = San Quentin State Prison (known for violence), Rennes = Centre pénitentiaire de Rennes in France, Kazan = Kazan Prison in Russia, Leaven and Worth = Leavenworth Prison, Holloway = Holloway Women's Prison in the U.K., and Alderson (the guy that dies in the beginning) = Alderson Federal Prison Camp.
You might not notice until a re-watch as well, that when we see Quentin for the first time he already has blood on his hands and clothes, but no obvious injuries. Also, when he drags Holloway into the room, he says "I thought you were..." but never finishes or elaborates on that though, suggesting maybe he's already come across people in the Cube before meeting the main group.
It's also interesting that clearly, whoever put these people into the cube gave them everything they should have needed to escape, Quentin is a leader, Holloway a medic, Rennes an escapist, Worth with his limited knowledge of the cube that helps with the math later, Leaven to work out the math, and Kazan as the human calculator. They even left Leaven with her glasses, the only personal item among the whole group, just so she can do the math. That all being said, what would Alderson's role have been?
This is such a great movie that is so open to interpretation, never overly explains itself, because it doesn't need to. The mystery makes this movie all the more fun, and the characters and watching them survive and mentally deteriorate is super engaging. Worth is my personal favourite character of the group, and I love how he starts off so apathetic and snarky, and turns into somewhat of a hero, a perfect character arc.
Personally, I'm glad its censored. I can't handle gore, so I wouldn't have even been able to watch this video.
Maybe Alderson was a psychologist who could make Quentin chill out and stop murdering everyone lol
@@GippyHappyand keep Kazan from freaking out maybe
I only know of this movie because of David Hewlett (Worth), an actor in Stargate SG1 and Atlantis. He seems like a cool guy now. I hope to watch this movie soon!
Circle (2015) gives me the same vibes as this movie for some reason. Maybe the abduction and unknown aspect of it. Surprised Mista GG hasn't reviewed it yet!
Cube is much better. Circle is pointless with way too many characters.

@@lrts1lrts181 Disagree, I found Circle to be more entertaining
@@lrts1lrts181To be fair, even though I admit that I liked the movie, I did feel like it had way too many characters for its own good. There's only a handful of characters who actually speak throught the entire movie, but most of them only had like one line or two before they died.

I loved this movie, i watched it when i was 13 with my dad, and it was fascinating, I watch it every few years, its great
i really think you should watch the other two in the series!! the second would be great to riff on, and 0 gives a lot of backstory and context that even tho u said isnt needed, it still changes SO MUCH of the original that its like a different movie afterwards.
i personally love every entry in this series (even named my cats after a character in the sequel) and it helps if u dont take them extremely seriously. i think the idea alone of something happening to you and nobody ever knowing the truth/finding you is terrifying and this series taps into that really well while still being a little campy. the second especially so

@@MM-jf1me it wont change that much pal the OP was a little, hmmm how to say, over zealous
I’ve been thinking more about this movie again, and I put something new (to me at least) together. I always thought it was a smart, cruel irony that the cube they started in was a cube that took them to the bridge to the outside. But, it also really complements Worth’s theories about them being put in the Cube because the Cube exists (ya know, how like in the US we put people in prisons because prisons exist). Anyway, if it really is an ambivalently cruel system that just has to keep putting people in the Cube because the Cube exists, of course they would just dump them in cubes that go to the bridge out. It’s the least effort required. If they were trying to do something actively nefarious, they could separate them all in completely different parts of the Cube.
This was one of those movies that came on tv at like 2am, watching it I was just like “wtf is even happening right now”
This is my 'Exorcist'. Parents rented it when we were like 8 thinking it would be a family friendly film. I have been traumatised ever since.
GG, there's a game series based on this movie called Half Dead! I highly recommend it, it has throwing shoes to test for traps and everything, and the 3rd one is super polished for how cheap it is!
I was definitely surprised by how good the movie was. My expectations weren’t high because I had never heard of it but it was a surprisingly good one
I have to say I love the little intros you do for you sponsors, they're super fun.
For those who don’t know, the actor for Worth is David Hewlett, who also plays Rodney McKay from Stargate, Atlantis and Universe. Very fun and unexpected cameo for me.
Love this movie! Surprised you didn’t talk about Worth finally talking about his job and Halloway’s mental breakdown. My favorite part of the movie, and why the Cube is a solid cosmic horror.
First time I saw this film was at a friend's 11th birthday party. It's one of the best films of all time. 20+ years later I still come back and watch it sometimes.
Man idk how you don’t have a million subs yet with the amazing content you put out with such a lovable personality to go along with, crazy. 2023 is your year man!
What are the things I really love about cube is the fact that it has such a limited set that it requires the actors and storyline to really work harder. The film is definitely more of a character study and how those relationships break down in great times of stress. And it is nothing over the top. Quinton, who starts off almost like the hero, slowly devolved into madness and becomes a murderous nut job. I’m really glad this movie is getting more attention because it is definitely underrated in my opinion. So glad you re-watched it again and I loved your commentary.
cube is one of my all-time favorite movies, and it sparked my interest in "movies taking place in one location" (like the platform, snowpiercer, exam etc.) thank you for reviewing this movie, it was great revisiting cube with you :-)

Awesome video as always!
I appreciate that the character names are all connected to various prisons, I thought it was a nice touch. Also Quentin creeped me tf out when I watched this, the guy playing him was so unsettling.
Still one of the most inventive horror movies ever in my opinion. Saw it in the late night theater screening when it came out. Only viewing, no info beforehand whatsoever. Let me tell you, that was an experience like none other. The shocked silence, only broken by some "oof"s, "what?!"s and groans of audience members when the title screen appears right after the prologue is one of the fondest memories I have of movie theater visits in general. We weren't used to these kind of "body split" scenes back then, especially not on the big screen. It definitely left an impression and I'm glad I got to witness the absolute OGs of these on the big screen back then (Ghost Ship, 13 Ghosts, the first Resident Evil).
Wait, is this another part of the cube?
Infinite cube reviews by Mista GG? That.. doesn't sound so bad.
Great video! (again)
this is genuinely one of my favourite movies, as one of the few people in Canada who did watch it lol. thank you for bringing it to the masses!
I'll always remember my dad suggesting this to me and I laughed at him, but going along with it and watching. By the end of it I was in love.
This movie equally terrified me as a little kid as much as it did help spark my morbid curiosity into this series and then time and space metaphysics etc. especially Cube 2 and the tesseract. Blew my mind as a kid.
That opening scene though, really puts the name Cube in perspective
Ayyye loved this movie as a kid, glad to see GG covering it 🙌
I saw this as a teen and was so into it. Like you, I only saw it once and couldn't tell you about any of the characters. Just remember loving the concept.
Please do the rest of the franchise, I’m very down to see a retrospective with all your takes
Of all the times I’ve rewatched this video, I only just noticed the cute little caption added at 13:00 above the Cube! It looks to authentic to what’s in the movie, absolute amazing job editing by Scout/Dubious!!
It's a shame that Saw got all the Hype. Cube was a masterpiece.
The Cube is a character study that illicits more existential dread than any other movie I've ever watched. The who, why, and what happens after leaving the cube don't matter, nor do the actual characters themselves. It's throwing a bunch of character archetypes into a hideous, other-wordly scenario just to watch it play out and see how they'd react. A masterfully executed piece of cinema imo. 10/10 *chefs kiss*
Here for the edit, sad I missed the original!

I always loved the first cube because of the mystery of why they're there and how to find the exit, the second movie had the same idea, but worse and the third movie tried to go back to the first, but showed us too much.
quentin is such an insanely cool character bc he really seems like the hero when you first watch but then when you go back you realize that all the stuff that made him an asshole was already there from the beginning, just recontextualized
I'm gonna coin the genre "abstract universe" movies because these movies all have weird and wacky universes that are already well established but we don't get to see that pre context, we just get thrown into a random event and piece together what we can as the movie goes on.
Cube and its prequel, Cube Zero, are two of my favorite thriller movies.
Fun tid-bit if you're feeling ballsy - There also is a Super Metroid ROM hack somewhere that runs with this concept! It's hard as hell though as iirc you need to get from start to finish in one go + it requires some movement tech that's not too easy to pull off in the slightest
Either way, I remember being obsessed with the later iterations of the Cube concept (mainly I think Hyper Cube) for, some reason, would be interesting to see videos on more of these movies
These movies were always good. Your videos are insanely fire to this day GG we love you man and I’ve been watching you since 5k subs man. Just know that we’re all rooting you on man. So even when RUclips screws you don’t give up !
watching again and commenting again haha.
fun fact, the characters in this movie are named after prisons that represent their characters. Some examples, Quentin is named after San Quentin due to its reputation as a very violent prison, Renne is named after a french prison that was the blueprint for many other prisons as he was teaching them how to live in there and Kazan is named after a prison that worked as a mental hospital. Really cool detail.
Extra fun fact, the sequel and prequel suck. worth reviewing for how bad at sucks.
