  • This is our walkthrough of Arundel Mills in Hanover, MD from January 11, 2019. This is a huge thriving former Mills mall, now managed by Simon Property Group. We walked away from this place feeling rather underwhelmed, evidenced by the lack of a slideshow, having nothing really interesting to take pictures of.
Songs used in this video (in order):
Stephen Gray - A Day in the Life
    Max Harris - Great Debate
    Keith Mansfield - Night Bird
    Memo Kurt - Spacefree
    Joël Vandroogenbroeck - Biblical Band
Geoff Bastow - Fillet Of Soul
    Steve Martin - Cat Walk
    Steve Gray - Wonder Groove
    -------------------------------
I'd like to say a few words about being an ambassador to your local malls. We have been taking the time to visit all the malls within a reasonable driving distance to check up on them and see how they are doing. Also filming an updated video every year or so, regardless of the lack of many changes, just so there is a video record of the health over time. We think this is an important thing to keep tabs on, especially in these wildly turbulent times. The current health emergency has accelerated the impending Retail Apocalypse we've all been talking about these last several years. This was already a big problem, but the shutdowns and restrictions have made the issue 5x worse and likely hastened the death of the enclosed shopping mall.
I know we've all been on pins and needles wondering how bad the fallout is going to be from all of this.
There really is no way to know exactly unless we ALL go and do our small part to make it known how it turns out. I implore you, if you have the means to pick an area you would like to be an ambassador for, and go document your local malls. Whatever your medium, it doesn't matter, any and all documentation is necessary and vital in this day and age. Whether it be on Social Media, Flickr, RUclips, any platform gets it out there and preserves it for posterity. We can't paint this picture unless we all grab a brush...

This place would be PERFECT to hole up in during a Zom-Poc. For instance, the signs that're loose in the middle of the halls could be used to cover the entrances to the mall, with both the massage chairs and some of the clothing racks put in between the 2 sets of doors for each of the mall entrances. Also, depending on how many people're with you at the mall, you could assign a couple of people (doing a couple of hour shifts) to be lookouts on the roof in order to keepmtrack of any problems that MIGHT arise.

@@TrainmasterCurtI was just using the Zom-Poc as an example. It WOULD be a great place for a story to take place at, though. Or even an RPG.

Mall sounds like a great idea, but have you considered how many entrances you would have to barriacde? You have, what? 6 entrances minimum in a mills mall. And those are just main entrances. What about entrance points for anchors, junior anchors, employee accessways, loading docks?

Arundel Mills was my second Mills and remains one of my favorite malls to this day. The mall is slowly losing its theming but it's still a strong property. The Cinemark (Muvico) is one of the nation's most profitable theaters.

I worked in this mall from grand opening in Nov 2000. The store to the right with the fish above it at 3:25 was my store, Gadgets and More by Kitchen Collection. They closed that store in 2003ish and as of Dec 2019 Kitchen Collection as a company was liquidated. I'm sad that Simon re designed the food court into a bland coffeehouse theme. Originally it was designed as a railroad roundhouse and paid homage to the B&O railroad. Other than that, this place has changed little in 20 years and I'm glad at least some of the Mills Corp style remains.

I haven't been to Arundel Mills since I was a child. Had no idea this mall had been renovated, and I see how the renovations have had an impact. Most notable to me is that the "pinball court" is gone (and I can't even remember where it was) and the food court was _destroyed_ into a 2010s mess. * sigh * Simon just couldn't help but pour at least a _little_ of their bleach onto this mall. 😞

Now is a good time to document these Mills Malls. Simon has been renovating them into bland vanilla malls. Katy Mills near Houston was renovated last year and looks so plain now.

These former Mills malls all look the same. While they were fresh an new once upon a time, they are starting to look dated and tired. They need a refresh.

Toward the end, I just love how that kid just ran in front of you. I also saw you almost got run over by a runaway stroller. Anyway, looks very lively. We have Gurnee mills in the area. That would be a long video since its so huge. I'll get the aurora outlets when the weather is nicer. Thanks for showing this.

Was this mall underwhelming because it felt like a never-ending cycle of stores? It does sort of give off that vibe but the options in my opinion do make up for it and I guess you do get a good exercise out of it.

The decor was very bland in my opinion and it was recently renovated to look that way. It used to be very colorful and fun like other Mills malls but now just looks like a hip modern place like everything else. It doesn't look bad, just not as nice as it was before.

No, it is a full price designer direct place, definitely NOT an outlet. That pair of jeans from Tommy Hilfiger will cost you 2x as much if you buy them at Arundel Mills vs. your hometown Macy's---same jeans.
