Imo the biggest tip to take from this video is that 2 things affect the mini: momentum and the direction of the rotor. While pressing w, the mini just accelerates in the direction the rotor is facing and not where you're looking or towards the front of the mini like a lot of players seem to think
As you both are some of my most favorite people to play Rust with this whole video had smiling the whole time. Thanks for the minicopter tutorial Sigbog and Koala! Easily the most helpful Rust content on RUclips.
I always told beginners it's *like walking* You focus 1 close point in front of you and move around it with wasd. And you correct your view with the mouse. It's the exact movement like in the helicopter and simple to understand. If you press A, you correct with the mouse to the right.

sig koala copters is legit. I struggled hella hard - Did a bunch of touch & goes. Another thing to practice is how to knock annoying outpost guests into the inescapable area of death or make them fall from high
@3:29 - I believe pilots call that "Flaring" where you pull back at the last second to alleviate momentous weight off the wheels or for minicopter flying, to avoid taking damage.
For the people watching this. I promise flying isn’t hard. Literally learned how to fly in the span of idk 3 hours or so. If you wanna go forward move your mouse up WHILE holding w (it will make you lose a lot of height otherwise). If you wanna stop pull down, and then after you stop move your mouse forward and try to level out. If you wanna land to the exact same thing from above and then hold s (makes you descend). To turn understand that you cannot just make a “sharp” turn and it’s not really just one continuous movement. Let’s say you wanna turn left, slow down (you can do it fast but it’s honestly unnecessary), press a, and move your mouse to the left at a similar speed. To move right to the complete opposite. To descend /ascend quickly just stop and hold w to ascend s to descend. And to hover it helps slow down by pulling down, whenever you slow down level out, you might still be going forward but that’s fine, and then try your best to just stop movin by moving your mouse in the opposite direction that you’re moving in. Boom you learned how to fly in about 2 minutes
i joined a random server trying to practice flying which happened to be koalakopters and i actually had no idea that it was a big community. really cool. i recognize the scenery. im going to have to go back there and try again cuz im still not any good at it.

W and S doesnt control rotor speed, it controls rotor pitch which effects the lift.. otherwise when turning upside down the rotor would be stationary for a second before spinning the other way.
I'm surprised jumping out of your mini to cancel it's momentum wasn't mentioned, I do that all the time to quickly land safely when I've got a lot of momentum
I used to solo loot train yard through the roof breach, throwing my copter away from that height to the rails to take it later and fly away , copter survived always once u mastered that technic, sadly roof is patched now haha :D
Reminds me of bf3 little bird, got I LOVED that thing. I would use it exclusively during the entire match and rack up 100+ kills with just the miniguns on it.
If I had one thing to add, its practice your landings, literally any monkey with a keyboard can fly to the destination then crash on arrival. go to Koala's and land on everything.
I learned how to fly this update because new heli. took me 20min practicing at bandit. No im not doing tricks but I can takeoff from hills/ go fast af and stop with out losing to much altitude. My heli base was outside some messed up terrain so had to get good or lose the heli. ps had no idea I could use ctrl . That would of helped a bit.
Did a zerg with Koala once. I was one of the main members that stuck around getting tons of loot for the base. There was haters in the group that didn't like the way I played but it was fun as hell!
I've played on the server for a few multi-hour sessions already, it's pretty awesome. There's lots of landmarks set up so you can practice in different areas, and you can spawn your own mini-copter (and also the transport). Please have Koala teach us more tips! ✈🚀
@@sigbog I would like to add to new pilots not to feel bad about having a hard time with the mini-copter because I have a lot of experience of flying helicopters in other games like Battlefield (including pinpointing altitudes for doing backflips and such) and flying the mini is hard for even me to get use to. I do like it though. I can't stress enough how important it is to grasp how to use the momentum (/ velocity) of the mini to fly. Try to get an intuitive sense of when to hold W to keep from dropping too fast.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but what you're doing is leaning your helicopter to the side with the A key while stopping it from rolling over by moving the mouse to the right.
took me a while as well, try hovering and making slight movements left and right. Really think about the rotor as adding force to the direction the rotor is facing, which is different than where your minicopter is moving. For me I kept acting like it was a plane, like I had to keep pulling up to pull up, when all you have to do is point the rotor and wait for its force to adjust your minis movement. so its more about pointing your rotor and then understand how long it takes for the rest of your momentum to shift to where the rotor is pointing
Actually, W is upward force, not rotor speed increase. S is downward force. You can modify these in a plugin to modify heli power. None of the plugins modify the downward force, except on my server with a custom plugin. When upside down, S for downward force is now going to keep you flying. If it was rotor speed decrease, you could not fly upside down. You practice until you get it right. Then you TRAIN until you can't get it wrong.

i wish someone could teach me just even the basics. I don't care about any tricks,.. just want to be able to fly and land and just be able to control the mini. But no matter how much i try in the flying training servers, i am not getting better at all. I just feel flying in Rust is too difficult. Controls are too sensitive. As i lift off and try to tilt copter forward to start moving, it just inevitably tilts me to either side and usually i just end up making things worse when trying to correct. horizontal axis is too sensitive. And when i lower the sensitivity, i lose also sensitivity for vertical axis thus practically not moving at all and even with sensitivity at minimal, horizontal axis is still so sensitive that even if i really try to move mouse only up or down, i still end up tilting to either side as well and crashing. I wonder why they made piloting in this game so complex and difficult. In every other way Rust doesn't try to be realistic at all, so why piloting have to be like in real life and without any stability aid
yea I feel ya, it was a long time before I got the hang of it and I'm still average at best. Having Koala teach me helped a ton and his advice legitimately helped a lot. you do barely need to move the mouse to start pulling yourself in one direction or another, you could try lowering your dpi and just focusing on hovering with little side to side movements until you find something that works. When I first started I was WAY over correcting, slinging my mouse so far when in reality I barely needed to move it. It helped to really spend more time thinking about the rotor direction because mentally I was trying it like a plane which just led to me crashing
