I installed a FAST EZ 2.0 system on my 68 Camaro SS when I installed the ZZ502 crate engine. It’s by a long shot the best upgrade I’ve ever done on a street car. Once I got the bugs worked out it has performed flawlessly for over 4 years. I fought a bad MAP sensor that came with the kit. Anyway, the throttle response is excellent, and the performance is off the charts. Great tip regarding vehicle condition. Tight exhaust, good electrical system, specifically grounds, are a must. If only Cora had thumbs! Great job, looking forward to part 2.
My first experience with fuel injection vs carb was my 1978 Chevy Monte Carlo with a carbed V-6. Ran like a turd, got 14 mpg, and wouldn't run at all if you didn't do the plugs and points at 12K miles. Boss had a V-8, fuel injected Caddy Seville same year. Ran like a scalded cat and got 20 mpg. Never bought a non-fuel injected car after that!
I actually enjoy wiring complex circuits. I get a real sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when I flip the switch and everything works as it should. I taught myself to read wiring schematics at the age of 15 when I had to rewire my first car that suffered a wiring harness fire from an accident. That car had power everything and the harness going through the firewall and the drivers side door was about as thick as my wrist. I ordered the factory manual and redid it wire by wire. That experience led to me being very good at wiring machine control panels and building my own cnc plasma table plus hundreds of other wiring jobs. I'm not a licensed electrician mainly because I have an engineering degree and didn't want to waste my time doing a long apprenticeship to get a license. I said all that to say that, not everybody dreads wiring stuff...I actually love it.
This made my day Steve! Really happy to see you make the upgrade to EFI. I cut my teeth on points/condenser and carburetors. Now days there is ZERO reason to run a carb, except for a competition that specifies one must be used. Or for a numbers matching restoration.
So glad your going this route. I remember mentioning this way back during the engine build. You will absolutely love it! It’s a bit of a learning curve, but well worth it!
You'll love it and so will the ole truck. Yepper's my first on was back in 2005. My HP 440 w/ 620 HP got an Edelbrock 1200cfm tune master. Couse non streetable, but on the track it was money well spent. Looking good, hi to the family. Be back next wk to see how your ole truck loves it (@@)!
I new Steve was going to upgrade. I too upgraded from a basic original 2 barrel 4.3L tbc on my 1990 GMC Sierra SL WT to a 4.3L Holly tbc and all the accessories.😲👍👍 An absolute game changer. 🥶🥶Also being from the same rust belt as Steve. I had to replace my starting to rust holes fuel tank, but it came the same way. I didn't trust the thin aluminum outside coating. So I epoxy coated the whole outside of the tank and sanded it smooth. Than painted Rust Oleum gloss black over that before installing it In 2013. No more worries.
I thought about painting my tank as well but the temperature was too low so I decided not to worry about it. I'm hoping this kit gains me easier cold starting and maybe a a little $ at the pump. 👍
@@SteveSummers I notice saving over $50 a month. From 3-1/2 fills a month to 2-1/2 times a month. I'm able to go much futher on a full tank. Plus it starts instantly.
I'm positive that you will enjoy your truck much more often with this fuel injection kit. Also you are very understanding of a 16 year old boy's priorities.
Great upgrade, love your videos Steve and the truck. I hate to be the safety police but a fellow youtube machinist (Hill Top Machine Works) just had a bad fire in his shop and sustained serious burns due to a couple gallons of gasoline that leaked from a car he was working on. His story was an incredible reminder how dangerous even a small amount of gas can be in doors. Stay safe out there everyone!
It seems no matter how careful and methodical you are, even professionals like Jay Leno, your friend Tom, and others have problems that quickly turns into an accident that can harm or even kill. The scary part is how fast that chain of events happens when you’re involved in some sort of accident. Be safe out there when you’re doing the things you enjoy.
Good video explaining the Fuel injection system Steve. I’ve been running a Retrotek Powerjection III system for over 10yrs. It looks like a duel feed carb but has 4 75lb/hr injectors and the ecu is small and mounted right to the throttle body. After being a diehard carburetor guy the injection system was worth the effort to change too! The 454 starts with a turn of the key no matter how cold or warm and runs consistently.
The best part is if you take a road trip, it will compensate in real time for changes in the weather and altitude. I'm using the same system on my current custom project. 1965 Mustang with a chassis and suspension I'm building and it will be powered by a SBF 363 with port injection using Holley's Terminator X Max system, and a 6R80 transmission. The one thing I forgot to add Steve, is to run the fuel pump through a relay. I always use 10ga wire from the tank to the firewall where I typically mount a high amp relay rated for the pump, and then run Holley's wire to the relay. Factory EFI systems always run there pumps through a relay. You might even think about installing an inertia switch in case of an accident.
That is awesome, thanks for the suggestions. I seen that in the manual about using the pump circuit to trigger a relay. It mentioned that for pumps over 15amp. Still is probably the best idea not to run all those amps running through the ecu and put it through a relay instead 👍
@@SteveSummers I haven't looked at the terminators pinout, but you might find that the wire is actually a ground output from the ecu. So the ecu tells a relay to turn on with ground, instead of being an actual power output. Great video as always Steve 👌
When you said bring it up to 2023 standards, for a second I thought you meant install a catalytic converter so you get the full modern experience of coming back to your truck and starting it up only to realise someone has stolen your catalytic converter. But I guess a fuel injection system is probably a nicer upgrade. 😆
@ken adams There are. The ones I've seen that allow proper airflow, so as to not cook the Cat or the underside of the car, still allow a Sawzall blade to rob the vehicle of the Cat, even if the device is still attached. The total box ones can still be cut out, unless they bolt to more than just the exhaust. But then you shorten Cat life or cook your floor carpet.

That's the 1st time I've seen the throttle body that looks like a carburetor. Did see a picture of both, side by side just didn't realize they made one where you don't need to install a new intake manifold. Nice work as always, n can't wait to see you finish it all up and the ride along. Thanks for sharing, take care until next time.
Carburation has come a long way since the old days - my dad used to have a1963 ford consul capri GT coupe, 1500cc bored out to 1650cc( - yes - tiny engine volumes compare to your real nice chevy truck's V8!) but I remember the smell of four star petrol, with the choke out, literally hearing the petrol pouring into the weber twin choke with chugging, sucking noises! I guess you could call this holley system a "smart" carburettor - or injection throttle body. Cool stuff good morning from the UK cambridgeshire fens!
First thought on seeing the new, outside shop light: add a bug zapper near the light and it will help keep the bug population down right there since the light IS going to attract them.
It has to be nice that everything is either new or very clean. Not getting grease all over everything. I wondered why you didn’t install a throttle body fuel injection and not a 4 barrel carburetor. I’m this throttle body fuel injection system plus the new distributor will perform excellent. Also you did an excellent job refurbishing your truck. I hope you have nothing but good luck with your truck.
Living in Wisconsin in winter I always had trouble with the choke on Chevy carbs. In fact I put hand chokes on. Never had problems with fuel injection.
Back in the day when I had my machine shop one of the tools that I used to have was a Sunnen distributor station and yes I have put through many GM HEI Distributors through it plus a plethora of others but for what it was and what it did back in the day it was priceless also you are talkin about Holly and how good their carburetors and castings and things like that my father was International president of the PT boats organization back in the 70s and 80s and early 90s and one of the things that they did was they rebuilt a PT Boat restored it PT boats have 3 V12 Packard engines on them that take a variable Venturi Holley carburetor if you remember back in the day Ford tried to make a variable Venturi carburetor that they put on their Ford engines in the late 80s the carburetors that was on these PT boat engines the Venturi for the carburetor was as big as your fist it had a little sliding door on it that accelerated it same Principle as the little one but way way bigger I think Holly used some of those on some of the inline Allison engines as well and on that note I had a 76 Chevrolet square body that had a 350 in it and I had a tuned distributor in it with a Rochester Quadrajet spread bore carburetor no I was taught by an old dirt Tracker out of the middle of the woods in the state of Missouri how to go through a Rochester carburetor and change it from Quadra junk to Quadra Jewel and I could make a Quadrajet Carburetor outperform anything that they had on the market at that time late 80s early 90s and nothing beats that spread bore sound when you stick your foot into a Rochester carburetor and that truck that I had if I kept my foot out of the secondaries and just strictly ran off the two barrel I would get 21 Mi to the gallon around town and 34 on the highway so I'd be interested to find out how Ultra tuned this fuel injected Holley can get love the channel Steve never miss an episode
Cheers Steve, a daring job all together, I've made plenty mistakes with incomplete data when I was young. wires left over which were not in the description etc. course this was before the computers were commonly in use. Nevertheless good progress, and looking forward to things you mentioned.
As much as I am an old school type mechanic and comfortable with screwdrivers, distributors springs and weights, points along with carbs I have to admit if this gives you better fuel mileage I am in 110%. I sure like your style my friend. These tanks have been known to rusting out on the bottom because of the rock guard on the bottom. I drill all mine with 1 inch holes to let the sand and dirt out but the guards still do their jobs. A new tank here just makes sense. I see your guard has already been removed so that is why. Another thing is that you leave no stone unturned with everything you do. Not a lot of people would put rivet nuts in the firewall or glove box as regular metal screws would most likely have been fine. If this ride will ever be up for sale PLEASE put me up for the first person you would call, What ever you want I will be there on the next plane with cash in hand, LOL. I guess I am kind of bent as I have always had a passion for electrical and wiring over my career. 6, 12, 120, 220 and all the big bag of 3 phase has never been a problem. I would however have a spare fusible link or two in the glove box. One for at the starter and one for this new rigging as if for whatever reason one blows you can fix it then. Just like changing a fuse. Shit happens my dear friend! Seems I have yattered along far enough. You are always such a great visit my friend. Take care and see you soon eh.
@@TomokosEnterprize There are plenty of nicely built vehicles out there. Some guys really take it to the next level. That type of build is far beyond my budget tho. From what my truck was it came out pretty good IMO. Thanks for watching bud.
I did the sniper efi on my Pontiac Firebird 69 , I found that it was hard to start out with my Tremic 5 speed it was to hard to feather the throttle I found out there is a conversion link that change my unit to progressive linkage and adjusted the computer it made a total differents . Easy to start off from a stop . Bill
My most hated thing I did when i was a tech was stabbing distributors. Doesn't matter the engine brand Never liked doing any of them. Fuel injection and distributorless ignition were the two best things to happen to engines/auto techs. I'm the type that likes doing the wiring. I may be doing a similar system on the current project but will make that decision when I get an engine for it.
Cummins engine co sold a nice 6 lb inch break away torque wrench For their tune ups The way you would use it is put the correct feeler gauge between the rocker and cross head tighten the adj screw to 6 lb inch and its set no worries is it too tight or too loose because 6 lb inch = 0 lash
Wow, that's quite involved. A very interesting job I will never do. :-) I wonder if you would consider cross posting your videos on Rumble? It would be good to see all my favorite YT channels there, where free speech is supported, and you'd probably make more money on two platforms.
good upgrade - you will get better mpg, better power, easier starting etc etc - good you are doing total system - you may be able to use some e85 now and then? afr will go down but it will run cooler - pls do a followup on this story - get a cb - the truck needs and antenna plus gps lo profile and running lites pkg - good to see you going all the way on this - lots of time and effort but worth it - lastly think about a backrack and some rails on top of bed - and a toolbox of course - the truck is close but still not 100% - you can advertise to do these sort of installs since it is such a nice upgrade - think about doing some data logging - not sure obd sys but you may be able to add blueteeth - shop around

Maybe not quite 2023. Throttle body injection and distributors went away in the late 90's. But a decent up grade regardless and keeps it looking old school. Maybe should mention the much higher fuel pressure and the need for a high pressure fuel filter.
asked a while back but you might not have seen it. How does the silencing material you added to the cab interior help with sound reduction? Big, small, improvement?
It's running good. I've had one O2 sensor fail and that's it. Knowing everything I know now, I'd have just put a LS in it and saved money over building a 383 sbc.
I'm not so sure about adding fuses. Of course, there is no harm in adding them, but they will not blow even in the event of a fault, because all even remotely modern ECUs have built-in overcurrent protection.
Do you need the Holley distributor for this system or can u still run a hei distributor. I’m brand new to this set up. Just ordered one and trying to get has much info has possible.

NEAT upgrade and fascinating install. Basically a good overview of the fuel system. Can't wait to see the software in action!
I use that permatex #2 on threaded fitting for air, water , fuel, and oil also instead of Teflon tape.....
That is an awesome truck, Steve. Always enjoy seeing it in the videos. I would love to find one someday!
At 30:00 this is a nifty issue that I like to call, Garbage in, garbage out. heh
Oh, my 92 red and white long bed wants one of those
Cheers Steve, a daring job all together, I've made plenty mistakes with incomplete data when I was young.
wires left over which were not in the description etc. course this was before the computers were commonly in use.
Nevertheless good progress, and looking forward to things you mentioned.
What? No remote start? Just kidding… Love your work! Keep sending us the good stuff!
I got you 1st on the call list😁 If I ever decide to let her go .👍
@@SteveSummers I am honored. As a gear head type I have never seen a nicer build. Take care of you, yours and her my friend. See you next post.
Good morning Steve from the UK
Good morning 😁
Good morning, Steve! 😅
Cummins engine co sold a nice 6 lb inch break away torque wrench
For their tune ups
The way you would use it is put the correct feeler gauge between the rocker and cross head tighten the adj screw to 6 lb inch and its set no worries is it too tight or too loose because 6 lb inch = 0 lash
I was wondering when you were going to install this upgrade, I expected we were going to see this during the rebuild. 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸
I couldn't get one during the build. They just were not available due to chip shortages
Well done Steve! I wondered before when you didn't want to go this route, but chose an easier way
I'm sure Cora would have installed that tank in half the time if you hadn't been in the way 🙂, The car is looking nice! Nice work
Wow, that's quite involved.
Those hose AN caps spin on counter clockwise and they pull in the sheath and steel pokey strands.
The Hot Rod reunion may be more what you need since your engine is the old school SBC not a LS.
Be able to see the big foot walking by with that light
🙁 I hope not. 😄
The dog is trying to help out.
I thought you were going to put cup holders in it. hahaha
Will be interesting to see if the mileage goes up or down compared to the old carb. I've heard results both ways.
Holly has a good system and so do fuel tech
Cora is so "helpful", just like my black lab. It slows you down sometimes, but it's worth it!
What truck? There a cora with an antler.😊
I had no idea they made conversion carburetors. Looking forward to how you get it programmed.
Cora: Dad...Am I a pretty good dog? Just askin'.
Dad: Yep, yer a very good dawg.
Five minutes later:
C: Dad?
D: Yes, Cora...
C: Am I a very, very good dog?
D: You, Cora are the very best dawg!
Five minutes later:
C: Dad?
D: Sigh...Yes Cora...
C: Need sum help?
D: Here, hold this stick...
Five minutes later
C: Dad?...
Ad Infinitum....😊
A 16 year old doing his best with school, holding a full time job and making sure that he is treating a young lady right is something to be proud of as well in this day. Great job by his parents! I hope this change is exactly what you want, great work Steve.
Great video as usual, Steve!
An off-topic question: what happened to the horizontal DoAll bandsaw?
Called this mod when I saw the block-off plate on the manual fuel pump, months ago.
Yep, it's been in the works for a long time👍
Maybe not quite 2023. Throttle body injection and distributors went away in the late 90's. But a decent up grade regardless and keeps it looking old school. Maybe should mention the much higher fuel pressure and the need for a high pressure fuel filter.
I would love to do a project with my dad. He's an electrical engineer and hires out for everything... so no projects with dad.
Hiya Steve
asked a while back but you might not have seen it. How does the silencing material you added to the cab interior help with sound reduction? Big, small, improvement?
It's like a different vehicle. Made a huge difference in road noise. It's not necessary to line the entire cab like I did to get good results 👍
Not too many modern vehicles that you can stand in while you are working on it!
I'd like to know how your system is running now that you have had time with it? Would you would change anything if you has to doing it over again?
It's running good. I've had one O2 sensor fail and that's it. Knowing everything I know now, I'd have just put a LS in it and saved money over building a 383 sbc.
I'm not so sure about adding fuses. Of course, there is no harm in adding them, but they will not blow even in the event of a fault, because all even remotely modern ECUs have built-in overcurrent protection.
Oh, if only your son would understand, girlfriends come and go, so do jobs, but he only has one dad and he'll only be around so long.
Do you need the Holley distributor for this system or can u still run a hei distributor. I’m brand new to this set up. Just ordered one and trying to get has much info has possible.
You can run the standard HEI, but you will not have timing control. It will work fine.
