We were once united as one tribe that originated from the Northwest and Mexico. Our tribes share land beside each other In Oklahoma. The generosity and compassion of the Choctaw people are legendary.
I just found that I have Choctaw Ancestry. I was adopted, and I do not know who my biological mothers name beyond Gail. She was born and raised in Anton Oklahoma. Buried there. I just don't know her maiden name to fined out who she is. I was born May 30th 64. My biological last name was Hughey. I'm told her family is Choctaw. Maybe someone reading this can tell me how I can find out this information.

A young white man married my young beautiful full blood Choctaw aunt & they had one child, but she died a few years after their marriage. His family weren't ashamed of her at all & he missed her very much. He cried his eyeballs out every time he went to her grave. He married other Choctaw women but they never lasted. They couldn't take the place of my beautiful aunt.
My great grandma was choctaw. I'm not sure if it was full blooded. I look white but when I lived in the south in Mississippi and Arkansas people would say I have features that point there is something different than the typical European heritage. Which my dad's side would trace back to Amish and I can trace that. When I go further back to my mom's side few generations I can go back and then it just kind of disappears. What I'm assuming is that during the "treaty" signed for the trail of tears. The choctaw that wanted to stay ( my mom's side) They had to register with an agent. Which in reality probably just put a target on there back by the government and settlers when you registered. Im sure someone in my lineage felt they had to give up their Indian heritage and other things to avoid much harrasment and prejudice and just quietly assimilated. So one could presume names where changed and my mom's true lineage tracing back to choctaw was destroyed in paperwork. That is probably why your family kept it a secret especially if they are from the south, to avoided persecution. I do wonder if there is a database or some system developed by the Mississippi band of choctaw to trace this lineage, I have yet to find on paperwork. There is just a total lack of paperwork on my mom's side so that does raise a flag that there is something there, and maybe my assumption on avoiding persecution is right. Keep in mind only 4-6 thousand stayed. So I'm sure there where some that it was easier to quietly assimilate than fight with an agent to keep land. Those that did fight ultimately got scammed out of there land and faced persecution when registering with an agent. Im not sure what the generation before my great grandma did if they registered or if they just quietly assimilated to avoid persecution. It would be interesting to know though. But those genealogy websites don't help. I'd have to see if there is something with the Mississippi band of Choctaw they have preserved that may have the pieces im looking for.
