  • Bathory is a legendary band with a cult status that goes back to the early 80's I knew of Bathory but haven't heard much of their music, today we fix that, a request from the most excellent Paul 0))) Bathory - Bor for Burning from the album The Return... so let's dive and and listen to some Bathory!
Bathory was a Swedish extreme metal band formed in Vällingby, Sweden, in March 1983. Named after Hungarian countess Elizabeth Báthory, they are considered pioneers of black metal and Viking metal, and one of the most influential acts in heavy metal as a whole.

Born for Burning has been one of my favourites since I first heard it on the cassette in 1985.
This was one of those albums that just kicked a door open for me. I was listening to it today again. Still love it!

I'm so happy to see you cover this band, Bathory had an unbelievable influence on me as a teenager. Quorthon inspired me to start recording my own music, after hearing that all these classic albums were recorded in a converted car garage with used equipment. (ironically, this album The Return was recorded in an actual studio, and has arguably their worst production). They were also the first time I'd heard a band change direction so drastically. Seriously, listening to Hammerheart right after under the sign and blood fire death is still a whiplash-like experience.
Sadly, Quorthon was already 5 years dead when I got into the band; I hope to make a pilgrimage to his grave one day. Much respect to you and hail the Hordes! \m/

One of my favorite albums. Haunting and terrifying. This is what plays when a burning witch summons head banging demons and drags people to hell.

You say, when Quorthon starts to sing, "you can hear the influence". Wrong ! He created Black Metal and was around 16 years old when recording this song.

Venom started it all and Bathory defined it. Quorthon was around 18 when this album was recorded, having been 17 when the first album was.

Look it's clear the idea of black metal was started by venom. But honestly bathory actually made black metal. Venom had the look, lyrical content and some tremelo picking but really it's nothing like black metal. Bathory though... Yeah it's bloody black metal. Listen to dark Thrones first album it's like every second riff is a redone equimanthorn riff. Crazy stuff to be that far ahead with his music. Then he makes fucking viking metal?!

Woah...I think I have to do a sage cleansing on my house and call in a Reiki Master after listening to this. ✝👹💀✝ I am familiar with this band only because the record shop where I would buy most of my Duran Duran import stuff seemingly always had something by them on prominent display....had never heard any of their material before this, though. I could deal with the music but not the vocal....too rough for me and yeah, it sure did sound like something from the depths of Hell. Don't get me started on the logo and the Old English font that I LOATHE... (Worst. Font. Ever.) I had to chuckle at the mention of Celtic Frost in the listing of related artists...the ONLY song I know by them is I Won't Dance, which to this day I find amusing....black metal's attempt at funk....

It's not for everyone vocal wise. But if you want a more mellow vocal pattern form Quorthon, than check out the song "Blood Fire Death". It was the song that got me into the Black Metal Genre. It's still got those blasphemous lyrics that we all love and the instrumental is A1!

I would like it better if they had more volume/power behind it...was it the production or just the volume turned down ?

    • @ShaneDiablo

the song was really low volume i cranked it up, but it was still pretty low,.

Honestly though Quorthon was a fan of Venom so of course there would be some similarities. To say it's a rip off is kinda hypocritical because a lot of bands use the same ideology or influence from each other and previous bands. Also this came out 3yrs after Venoms song "Don't Burn The Witch". I'm sure Young Quorthon had no intention of this said "Rip Off" . But this is just my opinion on your opinion lol.
