Instantly Do More Pullups (Simple Hack)

  • Try this easy "hack" to instantly do more pullups!
A brief, intense isometric warmup like this puts a HIGH amount of force through our body and primes it for heavy loads.
This makes our regular set seem easy.
This was taught to me as the "immediate after-effect" of isometrics, but I can't find anywhere that corroborates that.
Call it the "oogabooga effect" if you want. It does seem to really help.
The time numbers are not set in stone. I suspect they depend on the individual's conditioning. Try shorter holds and different rest times if you like and let me know how it works for you!

@@axelbaksel6595 yes, I actually spent a while thinking about how to title this.
I wanted it to be accurate, but also interesting enough that people think it's actually worthwhile.
"Do this 5 minute warmup to increase your pullup numbers" makes it sound like I'm just going to recommend stretching etc.
Open to feedback, but at the end of the day, it's a 41 second video. So even if someone hates it, they didn't waste THAT much time, haha.

This effect isn't limited to isometrics - for instance with weight training, if you do a heavy single rep (90% of your max) before a working set of multiple reps (at lower weights, around 60-85% of your max), then the working set will feel easier and you might get a few extra reps.

@@bayarea4153 well if you do have bad posture you should probably try to fix it. But if push-ups are the very first thing you do in the morning, then it's probably a lack of stretching that's the cause. I always move my wrists, arms, shoulders, back and legs around before I start exercising. You should warm up first. Your body has been inactive for ~7 hours, and then you go straight to pushups? It's a recipe for injury.

this is PAP (post activation potentiation), PAP describes the phosphorylation of myosin regulatory light chains by MLC-Kinase which makes them more sensitive to contraction via Ca2+ (beneficial bc MLC-phosphatase reverses the phosphorylation between sets quite often in intense movements), you can do this on pretty much any exercise ever to squeeze out a bit more good reps, particularly useful for powerlifters 👍
