In Asai karate 浅井空手, Neko ashi dachi 猫足立ち is a very popular stance. One of the main reasons is that this stance enables powerful front leg kicks. What I share today is front leg front kick, Maeashi mae keri 前足前蹴り.
Unfortunately, Neko ashi dachi is not practiced enough by most of the Shotokan practitioners. This is probably because this stance is not used in the tournament karate. This stance is very important in Bujutsu (martial arts) karate 武術空手.
There are two major key points in today's technique:
#1: You need to know the correct distance to the opponent when you make Neko ashi dachi.
Thus, you may want to step slightly back in angle or straight to the side. If you are too far, your kick may not reach the opponent or your kick becomes ineffective.
#2: Timing of the kick is very important. As I demonstrated in the video, you need to execute the kick as soon as you block the punch with your hand.
If you allow a pause, the opponent could deliver the second strike or he may push you to get you off balanced.
Many people have a problem of executing a powerful front leg kick as they remain in Neko ashi dachi. You need to use the Seika tanden 臍下丹田力 energy to generate the kick while the back leg is being kept bent.
