      Some flat earthers bought a bunch of ring laser gyroscopes only to have them report the earth as spinning at around 15 degrees per hour. They thought they were all broken despite spending around $15,000 on each.

      They not only can “sense” it. They can measure it such that they can determine earths rotation axis with respect to its baseplate to within fractions of a degree

    I'm a geophysicist I work in airborne gravity surveys, the gravimeters we use in aircraft to measure gravity have several fibre optic gyros in them, they detect the slightest rotation of the gravimeter and this data is used to control a motor driven gimbal system which the actual gravity meter is mounted in, the gyros detect and along with the motor driven gimbles keep the gravity meter orientated correctly so it measures only the vertical component of gravity as much as possible.

      @Nevir202 Mapping areas of low and high gravity, using the contrasts in gravity to map crustal structures, often we are mapping low gravity areas, gravity is proportional to mass, lower density rock has lower mass per volume so gravity is slightly lower where crustal rock is lower density, sedimentary basin deposits that can host or be the source of oil and gas deposits are low density so are of interest to oil and gas exploration companies.

    We put one of these on top of a vibro-replacement probe, and it was used to project the GPS position of the probe's top down to the seafloor. It worked very well.

      ​@@yakut9876the mechanical gyros are multiple motors spinning continuously, and a diode laser is like a single Watt. So yeah, absolutely less power for FOG.

    How do they make the fiber optics in FOGs durable? Usually fiber optics are prone to breakage if you bend it (cannot go below specified bend radius), so I would imagine vibrations from moving vehicles, shock from sudden large accelerations, pose a problem.

      Once coiled up, the fibers in a gyro could be encased in epoxy or whatever. The fiber coils are not spinning like a mechanical gyroscope.

      IMU measures more axis: It's an accelerometer, gyro and magnetometer. This is "only" a gyro, though the tech could be used to measure acceleration using for example a triangle, with more calculations required to isolate the different axis (unless a easier hack exist which is well possible as i didnt search).

    These have always been known as Ring Laser Gyroscopes. Why was there a need to change the name?

      Different manufacturers want to differentiate their products from another. One calls it Ring-Laser, the other Fiber-Optic. My little company calls it
      Laser-Optic-Ring-Fiber (LORF). 🤪

      @@yakut9876 use it for reference. MEMS gyros aren't nearly as robust as the one described in the video. I was curious and have the same question as you and the chat answer is a surprise for me too. I though mems are comparable at least.

      It would need to be larger, higher cost, and use more power than the IMU chips that can be spat out in large numbers for a few cents. Pretty neat though!

    ( Wear, vibration, friction, temperature changes ) These are mechanical problems that have been solved, so stop exaggerating matters. By the way, they are all present in the electronic system that controls and operates the light. With regard to wear, any material is susceptible to wear and tear, and any system is susceptible to wear, regardless of the type of system. All materials and devices/hardware are consumed little by little until they expire completely and fail as a result of electrons ( electricity ) passing through them. The most famous example is electric heating elements, It is even easier to heat by gas. Regarding vibrations, the optical and electronic systems have noise and vibrations and electrical transformers are the most famous examples of this. As for friction, it is also present in electronic devices, and this results in heat loss and also electrical decomposition of the material. Regarding temperature changes, they pose a danger to electronics, as it is known that heat and electronics are enemies. The same can be said about water and electronics, they are also enemies, and humidity can cause corrosion and paralyze the entire system. We should also not forget the problems of electrical insulation breakdown that occurs in capacitors or even batteries, and electromagnetic pollution, which is a silent killer. Add to that the attenuation that occurs in the optical system and its sensitivity to heat and radiation, as it requires special treatment and constant cooling, and it is also a voracious consumer of electricity.

    I think it's a little disingenuous to say it's "measuring the difference in time" when it's not . . . what it's measuring is the interference pattern which is a result of the effective path length change. Measuring deltaT would require electronics working faster than the speed of light . . . (yes, you do show this in the diagrams, but it's not what you say . . . I would think one of your engineers would be as adamant of correct terminology and phrasing as some random dude on RUclips)

      Path length and time are connected, does it matter how it's measured if you can calculate one from the other?
      It's like saying "they can't measure rotation because they're just measuring path length differemces". One follows from the other, so it's effectively equivalent.

      A laser
      A half silvered mirror.
      Fibre optic cable.
      A line array camera
      Low speed, low transistor count semiconductor.
      The principal of operation dates back to experiments from 1917 ish, so the science is global knowledge.
      Certainly up to 1980s, Russia was world leader in many chemical processes, especially coatings (they made the world's best photographic film)
      This gyroscope has very little more complexity than an optical mouse, and in some aspects it's even simpler than that.

      I used to fly with and operate a Litton Inertial Nav Unit (INU). They failed often enough from all those inherent mechanical problems. They have never been fixed, just improved over time to reduce the time between failures. The optical gyro is the solution to "fix" all the mechanical problems. The mechanical gyro system requires a long initialization before flight along with other preflight precautions. The optical gyro is the fix for the initialization "problem" that was not solved. That old massive Litton INU was decent in its day but the optical system is way more "perfect".
