i too ""inherited" a super 7 from a family friend's estate during this covid time and am looking forward to getting to know her, mine is from about '58. nice mod. new sub!
@@madguernseyboy I would have done the same. It's not a commercial machine being flogged every day by some gorilla. You worked within your limits at the time, and it's paid off.

I might put a video on my solution once fitted so others can compare. What are you going to use your ML7 for? Also i recomend jopining the Myford facebook group. loads of help, advice, data repository and Files there.
hi brendan video was great, i bet your very well chuffed with your new custodianship of the myford. nice repair and mod, if i were you i would be on the lookout for a quick change gearbox, next time you can perhaps cut your own thread and save a little more, that boiler looked impresive on the bench!! see you next time Kev
Very nice work sir. I have to do something about my lathe as well. At the moment I have tightened up everything but it is too tight and difficult to turn. Thanks
Have same problem also. Had shaft reamachined ro remove wear, made new nut to suit. Shaft is 5/8", so had room to do it. If needed will follow what you did. Thanks.
Very well done Brendan ... I just went and checked my 35 yr old S7B ... and Yep 0.007 backlash on the cross slide so I will have to do the repair in order to rectify my OCD issue ... Thanks ... now to fined some 3/8 x10 Acme in the Antipodes ????? ... CHEERS ( NB ... those with a 'S7B Long Cross slide" will need to use NTA916 bearings ... check dimensions before ordering parts).
Good luck on your search. I was preparing to make one if I couldn’t find one. I even dusted off the fixed steady in preparation. But luckily I didn’t have to go down that route.
Nice job Brendan but copper slip is a Bad idea on a lead screw. It's good at preventing corrosion on bolts but a very poor lubricant and will wear out the lead screw. A good bearing grease will keep things running smoothly a lot longer. Looking forward to more content from you.
Thanks for your comment. Another person has told me the same thing. I guess it must be true then :) I have used a general grease instead. Thanks for your help
I've noticed some weirdness with DRO nonlinearity versus the scale reading on the cross-slide of my Colchester. Little light-bulb moment watching your video when I realised that it could be wear in that part of the leadscrew. The DRO still tells the truth, but I can't trust the manual dials. Thanks for the inspiration, I'll take a look and se what sort of state that leadscrew is in. I failed miserably to get my #toolfest2021 video done in time, so perhaps it can count as 361 days early for 2022!

No am not sure this why I ended up buying From the USA, You could try www.abssac.co.uk/c/Precision+Lead+Screws+Nuts/45/ But I think it’s all metric. If you have a travelling steady it shouldn’t be too hard to make one if you have the time that is ;)
Nice job, Brendan. Noticed the really well designed saddle stop attached to the front of the head stock. Is this your own design, or did you procure it from someone?
Bought it from here www.eccentricengineering.com.au/uk-distributor Highly recommend excellent quality. Shame my cheap Chinese collets let it down….. :(
I'm probably being a bit of a prude but i can't help but notice that you're assembling bearings in dirty conditions with no grease. Otherwise, I appreciate the video. I'm about to do about the same procedure for a chinese 9x20, which has triangular threads and plain steel-on-steel bearings. Cheers!
Shipping costs from US via fleabay are extortionate. If I could filter out US listings altogether I would. You did really well there. Bit odd your leadscrew wearing out before your nut isn't it? unless it's already had nuts replaced of course.
@@bingosunnoon9341 Just look at the screw in the video, will you? It's a right-hand screw. Once again, the Myford cross slide uses a right-hand screw. End of discussion.
Good question!!! I don’t know it was a unfair assumption. I just know they used to post and now they don’t. “Thank you for considering McMaster-Carr for your purchase. However, we will not accept orders from your facility due to the cost of complying with US export regulations.”
It is because the crown has mandated that customs duties be collected by the seller wherever in the world they may be. Most sellers balk at that. Here in the USA, it is bad enough having to collect sales taxes where there are about 43 states that have a sales tax (kind of like your VAT) but the rules and rates vary by the exact location an order is sent to. Collect for the King now? No way.
It's always satisfying when you reduce or eliminate backlash, good upgrade, nice video.

That was with the lathe when I got it.

Yes I bought a new nut first thinking it was the softer metal. But perhaps the previous owner had already done that. Who knows.
I had to check the comments before I said that myself. Could be that someone made a steel nut at some point in time because of excessive backlash.
@@madguernseyboy the softer material picks up swarf and grit and wears out the harder one. Quite common to see in bearing materials.
