I agree with other comments calling you out for so many f words. I would think you would have a better vocabulary. You're supposed to be professionals, and this is online. You guys are the type of doctors I wouldn't want to cut me up, especially my spine or brain. You blatantly discount Dr. Goobie's talents, experiences and choices. Stating he was a misfit for being a neurologist/neurosurgeon is not your call or place to query. Why would he want to come on your show, after your dissing. You guys have enormous egos, which isn't surprising for some surgeons. "Behavioral Economics?" Wtf? I imagine you want to monetize Dr. Goobie's content and personal experience. He verbalized his choice, in a vulnerable way. Many saw his video. You guys should have just kept scrolling. Just STOP. You do you, and 'mind your damn business'. I hope you reflect on how you're treating Dr. Goobie and he never wastes his time explaining himself to you. You don't have to understand his choices. Let him live his life without your judgement and professional peersplaining. He doesn't have a "debt" to society for his training. He did his part. Even the military only asks doctors for 7 or so years of service after training them. Stop being mean girls.

At the beginning of Dr Goobie's I Was An MIT Educated Neurosurgeon Now I'm Unemployed..., he clearly stated that he did med school, 6 yrs Neurosx training, and nearly 10 yrs practicing his specialty. He went on to say he spent nearly 20 yrs of his life to realize how unhappy he was because he could not alleviate some patients' pain. He felt "morally bankrupt". He wasn't denigrating the field, but addressing his own frustration. So there's no reason to find fault with him for his feelings. At this stage, he needs time to figure out what he wants to do with his life. I believe he will go back to medicine, but a different specialty and that's his choice. I know both of you are defending the specialty and that's understandable. However, I also think there needs to be more latitude given to surgeons in terms of production. I think that is the biggest issue and I speak from having a family member who is a physician, as well. I can see why there's burnout and problems that are incidental to work overload. So, thats my stance and defense for Dr Goobie and all medical professionals who found themselves in that same boat.

@pekaspi1 Well said. These neurosurgeon doctors, especially Dr Wang, are good examples of the toxic environment in residency training. It's 'Blame the Victim' day every day. I don't think any human being has the capacity to fully understand in advance what they are signing up for when entering medical school & residency. And anyone that feels not qualms about cutting into human brains is probably a dangerous sociopath or at least dangerously insensitive to the feelings of others. Which is the obvious opposite of Dr. Goobie. I agree with you, he may (or may not) return to medicine. I certainly hope he NEVER appears on this podcast. It would be hugely damaging to his psychological health unless he is coached in advance how to defend his position decisively. Many physicians over the years have made similar decisions & never looked back, including myself. I see him becoming more of a Michael Crichton book author type. Imagine the books he could write like "When the Air Hits Your Brain" or "My Own Country". But today's version of mass publication is social media & RUclips, so he is obviously way ahead of me here.

Main point here is patient selection. In my 30 years of experience in medicine, 80% of spine surgery is done on wrong patients leading to chronic pain and opioid dependence. There are too many spine surgeons in US. If they all have to make a living, they have no choice but to do unnecessary and unsuccessful spine surgeries even when they know better.

I think people are overgeneralizing from this video as a so-called confession against Western medicine when in fact the RUclipsr here (and former neurosurgeon) is making a very precise narrow argument against the limited advancements of treatments available in neuroscience NOT all of medicine. To be sure, what doctors do when using antibiotics to CURE (not treat, but cure) illness is legit. Also, many operations are indeed successful in curing and saving patients: e.g. many heart procedures such as bypasses, valve repairs, etc. People continue to live due to kidney and liver transplants, which are an example of effective surgeries that provide people many years and even decades of continued life, not to mention pain relief. What the RUclipsr here is lamenting is the limited successes in the field of neuroscience and neurosurgery, not all of medicine. And within neuroscience he was lamenting not being able to pursue a subsection of neurosurgery he was interested in: neurosurgery in the brain and spinal operations. If Dr. Goobie really loves medicine, after he recovers from his midlife crisis (as he called it himself in a joking way), he can always retrain in a field where operations DO MATTER, such as heart surgery, kidney surgery, liver surgery (i.e. thoracic medicine) where he would be able to save many lives and actually CURE people, not just TREAT symptoms, which lamentably is in fact what most doctors talk about, instead of curing. But let's not forget the actual limited message of this RUclips video and make claims Dr. Goobie never made in this video.

What I heard from Dr Goobie's video was that he did not feel he was helping people because "medical care" was boiled down to surgery or pills. I am so happy to see people waking up to how the health systems are a business and they do not run if people are healthy. Of course, they do not force you to get these procedures done, but they definitely sway less educated patients to get treatments and drugs they may not need or should be a last resort. I personally always thought the serum lab ranges to be ridiculously calculated. I had low iron that was causing many debilitating symptoms, but because my CBC panel was all considered in the "normal range" of low I was considered fine. I had to get critical before I REQUESTED an iron panel and ferratin to be run and low and behold.

Lose the profanity when representing yourself as professionals in public. Also, hard to be taken serious or competent when you are sitting at Amy's Bar ..... distracting and conflicting presentation to those of us out here viewing. After all, a Bar doesn't set a positive example for healthy lifestyle choices when discussing medical topics. After studying Goobie's recording ..... he presented himself with transparency and vulnerability ..... that takes more courage than being a good "do boy" to keep your job. Everyone should be comfortable and encouraged to be heard BEFORE they give up. Mental health in patients and providers of healthcare are ignored. If you can get between a persons EARS you can provide the foundation for relief and healing. It takes many years of practice to achieve this technique of balancing the flesh, the emotions, and sometimes the spirit. Humble medical professional here practicing 37 years wartime and peacetime with some observations. Every patient has taught me more than any medical text or AI.

I've worked in manufacturing most of my life. Worked with some of the smartest engineers and very intelligent men and women. Goobie speaks slowly, very careful as to what he says, you can just tell he's very smart. That said, these podcasters, too, are very smart. Goobie realized neurosurgery wasn't for him. Most of us who went to school end up working in a different field or profession. Most can't afford to leave their profession because life happens. Bills, student loans, family, etc. That said, good for Goobie, that he chose happiness as opposed to 'time to make the donuts'. Many go to work every day miserably. I'm glad he was honest enough to do what was right for him. Many of us can't.

I was actually the only person/ Clinical psychologist, PhD. out of the over 9 M. viewers and thousands of digruntled commentors who defended this profssion ( in spite of myself suffering from herniated disc on lower lumbar 4,5,6). What gives me motivation to respect my profession is that I believe I am helping people transform their lives changed in some significant ways! It should always begin with the understanding of WHO's definition of mental health as "An individual's capacity to maximize his/ her potentials to the fullest, their ability to cope with daily challenges in life in creative ways, and contributing something meaningful to humanity"
I live up to this idea and its my wish for every medical professional to embrace it.

Cool video-I was also surprised at all the comments from unhappy medical workers and others in the video. I am a retired school psychologist for over 30 years and helped 1000’s of kids with autism-down syndrome-learning disabilities-social emotional issues. I am sure if he worked with these kids especially the severe kids his perspective would change! For the most part we help these kids and the parents are happy. However in every profession we have these unhappy people always complaining etc. Interestingly enough his affect in all his videos are so different compared to you guys!
