one of the best crappie rigs to use all year round is a slip bobber. In this video I show you how to tie a foam float and jig style slip bobber rig with live minnows. The crappie rig works great during the winter, especially ice fishing.

I use a float a lot like those, but they can be both fixed or slip and not prone to falling off like that thing is. They also can be installed or removed without having to feed the line though it.
They also have the same hole in the top if I wanted to put a small glow stick in it. They're a lot cheaper too, $.50 to .75 each depending what size pack you get 4/12 and they come in 4-5-6" lengths..
These type of floats are better than any of the others, they detect up,down, and side bites. They will also detect when one just swims up to it and inhales it and then sits there. I had the last happen many times and since carry a couple (for 1/32 and 1/16 jigs) that has been cut shorter to match the weight of jig I'll be using so it stick up out of the water only 1/4". When they were inhaling it it would only move 1/16 to 1/8" and was very hard to detect, especially when it was 10' or further away.
Why do people think they have to use a loop knot to have a jig suspend properly? With #6 line your best loop knot is going to be the weakest link and be only around 50% of the line rating. A Clinch Knot or almost whatever other knot one prefers will hold that jig in a level position when you tighten it and place the knot on the top of the eye. When you catch one or had a decent hit yeah you will most of the time have to readjust, but what's that take .0025 of a second over losing 50% or more of your line # test.

Thanks for the info. I watched your video on the 4 types of bobber stops. What stop is best for casting using a 1000 level reel on an ACC rod?

It really depends on what line you use. Braid is usually a little to small (I use #10) and the small rubber football type still slip so I have to have another elongated style to help keep it from slipping. Why do I use the footballs when they slip and not just use the elongated ones by themself..? I hate the tied ones, they always come lose and slip a lot more than the footballs and the ones you weave the line through sucks worse then footballs for casting. I have to use the elongated ones as they fit a lil tighter on even the #10 braid, but they will slip into and often gets stuck in the cavity of most floats that you use for slips.
A lil trick I do to set my depth without a line counter reel ( have zero LC's and use this on every 50-60 reels I have) and not using a slip float is to use one of those elongated rubber types and slide it on the line, measure out the length of line I need and slide that stop to it. I primarily use casting reels for everything and I have that stop behind the levelwind because they can slip trying to go through the levelwind. If I need to go shallower I just slip the stop towards the lure/bait or further away to go deeper. If you get something large on to run your drag it'll go through the levelwind easily but may slip some so you want to check it after that again, but it's as easy as setting it up the 1st time. If I want to cast lures/bait to an area I just slide that stop past the furthest distance I expect that rod/reel/tackle setup able to cast.
I didn't catch the 4th type of stop as I was skipping through the vid. What I know of is the rubber stops (mentioned above),the tied stops, and the ones you weave your line through. IDK if a rubber band was mentioned as a type but I have seen people use them. I never have,it doesn't take long for rubber bands to degrade and fall apart. They may work great or even better than the footballs, but they degrade much much faster. Who knows I may try them at some point.
I tried balloons as floats and also adding a glowstick to them but when trying to cast them you may get a cast or two or 3 if your lucky they always popped and you'd lose the stick or were cut and you'd have to rig another.....only for it to do it again. I didn't like having pieces of balloon left in the water along with a perfectly good glow stick. They use balloons surf fishing to use the wind for drifting their bait out and I was doing the same but on a much smaller scale for crappie, etc. to get to spots I couldn't reach if I'm bank fishing.

What’s the rubber band on the line for? In the beginning.
