  • I spent 3 days on the UNM campus, so here's perhaps my most in-depth look at a university. The University of New Mexico is the state's biggest public university and it's unlike any campus I've ever seen. I give you a UNM Campus Tour in this video and a brief interview with a UNM student.
    Nicole Tami and Pablo Torres were amazing hosts for the IACAC 2022 Conference, and they were kind enough to spend over an hour talking to me about UNM. Since they were super exhausted from the whole week of hosting the event, they preferred not to be on camera for this one, but they gave me a ton of info about the university.
    If you want to apply to UNM, they're not on the Common App so visit their website and fill out their application here:
    www.unm.edu/apply/
    If you're international and you have questions, reach out to anyone at the Global Education Office, especially Nicole or Pablo. You can find their information here:

    I enjoyed hearing your impressions of UNM and seeing some of my favorite spots. I was an out of state student with an Amigo Scholarship, class of ‘92. I loved my time as a Lobo. My kid is there now, also with an Amigo Scholarship. And I agree, UNM is a great diverse campus where everyone can find their passion.

      Thanks for sharing that! I had no idea that Amigo scholarship went back decades, very cool to see that. Glad I was able to help you reminisce a bit

    Hi, I’m a high school student in the U.K. and this video was great. I visited UNM last year as my father was born in Albuquerque, and i thought the campus was great. Are there any other scholarships similar to the amigos for other universities in the US as I would love to keep my options for next year open. Cheers

      Thanks for the comment, super cool to hear somebody from the UK considering UNM, small world we live in today! I actually published a video a while back with 10 universities that have in-state tuition for internationals, and UNM wasn't on the list at the time, so you might want to check those out too.

    Sadly I don't have a 3.0+ and I'm not doing the SAT or ACT. I'll let my college hours just transfer.

      @@score-yourcollegecounselor Well, I have an Associates from River Parishes Community College in Gonzales, Louisiana. It's really a great community college.

      Good to know! Have you checked out ULM for transferring? They've got some pretty generous scholarships too

      @@score-yourcollegecounselor Ah, sadly no film majors. I'm looking at UNM and CU (University of Colorado Denver). They aren't as pricey, have decent transportation and alumni tend to make more. Thank you for the suggestion though.

      Oh yeah if you're checking out film majors then definitely UNM has some appeal there. Good luck with the transfer and I hope you like it there

      If you got problems with people there then you need to talk to them internally, I have nothing to do with the university itself or anything that goes on there

    It's time for me to attend a University and unfortunately this is my only option. Not excited or looking forward to going here but it is what it is. I feel like people also generally look down on this state and people from it and feel like UNM is essentially a community college. Oh well.

    • @score-yourcollegecounselor
      @score-yourcollegecounselor  Год назад +2

      I get that it can be a bit disappointing when you don't have options. Honestly though, it's WAY more interesting than a community college. CCs really lack a social scene and any true identity. UNM has character, it's quirky, like Albuquerque. And if you really don't like it, kick ass in your classes and transfer out after a couple of years with a good scholarship somewhere else. What do you want to major in?

      @@score-yourcollegecounselor Thanks for the advice, and yes, Albuquerque is a strange place for sure. Born and raised here though it has become the norm for me, it always felt like I was in a different country when I went to California and Texas. I'm planning to major in Management Info Systems but have considered attending Law School in the future as well. The public school system here was less than ideal growing up but I'm going to try my best in college. Most people I know can't attend and are forced to work minimum wage jobs so I am thankful that I'm able to go to a university and get a chance.

      I appreciate the positive attitude there. We don't always get to decide where we go, but at least we get to go. The public university I went to here in Peru had disgusting bathrooms, no AC, 50 people crammed in a sweaty room. I still got a lot out of it. Ultimately, your effort matters more than the location.

      We're all pretty ignorant when we start college, so I'd say that's a good thing

    • @score-yourcollegecounselor
      @score-yourcollegecounselor  Год назад +3

      I actually saw that news report come out, and I think it's exaggerating the situation quite a bit. It's just based on total number of "crimes on campus" which depends heavily on law enforcement. Underage drinking could count as a crime on campus. It's not like students are getting robbed and murdered. One of the more common ones was car theft or stealing things out of cars. I could see that happening as some parking lots are on the corners of campus right by the main road.
      Having said that, ABQ isn't exactly a very safe city. But nobody I met on campus seemed to be worried about crime there. Live on campus and you'll probably be fine.

    • @HS-cf4lb
      @HS-cf4lb Год назад +1

      @@score-yourcollegecounselor I also heard it's a very segregated school and extremely racist to conservatives and whites in general, right leaning conservatives should not walk alone or they could be violently attacked by left leaning people of color.

    • @score-yourcollegecounselor
      @score-yourcollegecounselor  Год назад +6

      That sounds very extreme to me. Look, most universities are left-leaning by nature. I've covered one that wasn't (Hillsdale College). But I've never heard of conservatives being violently attacked by leftists on campuses. How would they even know you were a conservative? Now sure, if you walk down the halls with a MAGA hat, you're probably not going to make many friends. But people of color aren't just waiting for you to walk alone so they can beat you up.

    • @HS-cf4lb
      @HS-cf4lb Год назад +1

      @@score-yourcollegecounselor point taken...then why can't conservative students hold events and invite speakers without there being a violent riot like protest by the left? And why is it that these schools are so far left anyway? It's like there trying to create their own socialist groups and kill off anyone who doesn't align with their political view? It's almost Hitlarian if you think about it. I bet if you did a poll or some sort of survey asking these kids whether or not conservatives or Republicans should live on this earth you'd probably get 99% wanting to eradicate the right. You should do a poll next time you're on a campus and see how it goes.

    In Albuquerque, crime rates are high across the board. According to the Albuquerque Police's annual report on crime, there were 46,391 property crimes and 15,765 violent crimes recorded in 2021. What is this? These numbers place Albuquerque among America's most dangerous cities.Nov 22, 2022

    • @score-yourcollegecounselor
      @score-yourcollegecounselor  Год назад +1

      I actually did a video recently exploring crime rates on campus. While you are totally correct that there is a higher rate of crime in Albuquerque compared to other places, college campuses, including UNM, are statistically _much_ safer than the surrounding area. Many of the crimes attributed to UNM actually don't involve UNM students, as the data includes events that happen on public roads adjacent to the campus as well.
