Yes! When standing, your legs become part OF the suspension and things get a lot smoother and easier to control.

I honestly think more than 50% of times you fall/crash is because you are going too slow. Momentum and balance will keep your bike up along with standing..... usually the more momentum you have the more balance you will have. This ties in with that you said about standing and looking far ahead you can see obstacles and keep your momentum/balance up. A great place to practice this is over on the dunes or any sandy area you can find. Go slow and most likely you will be on the ground or extremely tired from wrestling your bike the whole time. Go fast, stand up, lean back, use the throttle and let the momentum and balance do the work for you. The better you get at this the better you will be on dirt and rocks.

A couple of additional advantages for two-finger:
    1) At some point, I realized that I reference throttle position relative to my fingers on the brake lever. It’s more difficult for me to finesse the throttle or maintain a steady speed without that constant reference.
    2) Gear changes are more like a crisp trigger pull than a full squeeze. I started by learning to lightly preload the shift lever, then trigger the shift with a quick half-pull of the clutch. Over time, this preloading becomes almost imperceptible and quick, with significantly less effort than a whole-hand squeeze.

Hey Dork, fellow two-wheel enthusiast and MSF RiderCoach here. About 4 fingers on the levers… Yes, we teach that in the Basic RiderCourse because that’s effective and safe for most riders and especially novice riders on our BRC range exercises. In our Advanced RiderCourse, we absolutely encourage riders to experiment with four or fewer fingers on the levers especially in hard braking and trail braking exercises. Any MSF coach would be happy to talk about the benefits of one-, two-, three-, or four-finger lever techniques. Just speaking some truth against the stereotype that MSF=four fingers on the levers=bad. Much love for your fun content!

Nice advice, toes in while standing and sitting. Leg breaks happen often when your toe is out, heal is in, and your foot catches on something or the ground. Work on hand position, the natural position sucks, you have to train to get your hands right to where the un-natural becomes natural.

Great video Ben. I try to have a "flight plan" every time I get on the bike so that each ride includes some practice: u-turns, slow race, max effort stops, trail braking. Like you I pick one or two to work on either during the ride or at the beginning and end. Great advice you gave in your video!

also ‘keeping feet on the pegs as that’s where your controls are” and in the early days of MX and enduro (70’s) with limited suspension, legs augmented the flex.
Also if you keep your ass off the seat, you won’t be thrown off the bike when the rear kicks up on a big bump (you don’t “endo over your bars”

Man, I gotta grow some cajones and get off my arse! I will admit when stand I feel like I am going to whisky throttle or lean the bike too much and slide out. Practice make perfect I suppose. OFFSPRING IS DA ( you get the point) You're gonna go far kid!!

    Thanks a lot bud.
I'm 45 years old and it's my first year learning motorcycle. I ride offroad doing bird hunting, that way I can cover more ground. I have a crf 250L 2014 that I bought this past August. I enjoy it really bad. I'm addicted to it now. 😉
I just tried 2 fingers on clutch and brake today like you said. What a big difference man! Way better! But when I stand up I still put full hand on the gas cause I find that I'm jerking the gas with 2 fingers and it's dangerous. Maybe later on with more practice... Do you use 2 fingers standing up?
I like to stand up on the bike like you said as well but I find it dangerous cause I can't see behind me in the mirrors. I look in the mirrors before I stand up and I try to stand up for short periods.
Other than that. Thanks for helping me out. I'm getting better and better every day.
I find that when I ride with my jbl boombox Bluetooth music full blast, I drive way better. Weird hey?... It's all in the synchronization I guess and the music help me synchronized with the bike.
Thanks again bud. Keep up the good work bro!

Noob rider here so take my advice with a grain of salt, but be ready with that clutch to cut power to the throttle if necessary, and don't hold yourself up with your hands. If you aim one mirror for standing and one for sitting, your rear view is covered.

Right on bro, I will try that next year. Thanks again.

There is only one way to improve your riding skills and that is to ride, you don't have to be fast, you don't have to be skillful, all that will come with experience, just get out and ride.

  • @KLRmurdercycle

Buy a 1st or 2nd gen KLR for clutch training🥵🤣
Learning to stand and then working towards standing fo longer periods, conditions you for all day standing.
Balance practice is a great way to improve your riding. Everything becomes easier.
Use a step or a pale, or if your a KLR rider, use that milk crate🤭 to help as a spotter for balancing.
I'm one of those that shouldn't be followed😄

I think a lot of adv people are standing up too much on the gravel roads. They are just coasting and not used to control their bikes standing up. I've seen several running wide in the corners due to this. In Sweden it seems like standing up is a religious cult.

Standing up: Comfort pads in your pegs like the ones that come standard on the KTM 890 ADVENTURE S can make standing up literally impossible when you are offroad. They are so squishy and comfy on pavement, however, if they get wet and muddy, you will slip off of them and ypur pegs will be slippery until you stop and scrape the mud out of them and clean the mud off your boots.
No comment on how I learned this the hard way. I couldnt believe I did not even think about it until I was in a position where it made my life exponentially more difficult!
