    In this video I buy a Makita DHP458 combi drill with a drill bit jammed in the chuck and a seized up gearbox. It proves remarkably easy, if a little time comsuming to fix.

    Thank you. Great video. I was given a Makita drill by my tradie son in the same state as yours - jammed chuck with drill bit stuck. I followed the same process as you, fixed it in 5 mins and now have a new drill. Cheers - James

    I filled my chuck with WD 40 and left it over night.. Then used a hose clamp to fix it to the vice. Working with exhaust pipes taught me a thing or two about oval shaped stuffings that should be round..

    Bought a second hand DHP458 combi drill (2019) as part of a set of tools. The chuck was jammed solid. Watching your video gave me the confidence to get it working again with lots of penetrating oil and a good set of mole grips. Thank you.

    Thanks didn't have a vice but a buddy and vice grips really tight worked. We didn't have oil so we used dish soap which worked. A week later remembered to get some wd40 and the drill works great now. Look for the next episode of this old drill.....

    I was told by a person in the know, that the way to stop this happening is to gently, (when drill works fine) spin it to full open, and full close. No full spin to full ooen, full closed...

    Cracking vid thanks.
    Had the same issue just, the same model, but plastic coated chuck. Managed to get bit out and able to tighten and loosen chuck by hand now mostly without horrible noise, however still seems to snatch at end then difficult to move.
    Also the chuck seems to run on and the jaws open or close, which is obviously not clever!
    Any hints or tips on that please?

    • @ShedTV
      @ShedTV  Год назад +1

      Thank you. If it was doing that clicky grinding noise it may have jumped a tooth and now one jaw is slightly out of line. To be honest at this stage I'd buy a new chuck, they're not too expensive. See my video on chuck replacement for help if you need it. ruclips.net/video/5RchQ066_yQ/видео.html

    • @ShedTV
      @ShedTV  7 месяцев назад +1

      Always worth spaying a bit of lubricant in and running it back and to a few times.

    • @martinallaire9488
      @martinallaire9488 7 месяцев назад +1

      I will do that... but now its stuck in the "small bit" position and wont turn back. I guess its been short on lube since the start... my chuck shows marks of pliers to hold it still, like the ones on the video. I had to use a plier on it out of the box.

    great video, just one question, my drill is a ryobi 2021 model which is pretty newish, i have the same problem but it has a hexagon shaped screwdriver bit stuck in it, any tips on how i can get it out?

    • @ShedTV
      @ShedTV  Год назад

      Thanks. Tricky one, I would try gripping the bit in the vice, holding the body of the drill in one hand while pulling away from the vice, then try rocking the chuck forwards and back by hand. It might just free off, but mind you don't go flying backwards!

    One of the three tynes in the chuck worked its way out,is the drill ratshit now ? In trying to remove the chuck on my identical drill I got the screw out, put a lrg allen key in the chuck but it just keeps ratchetting and not unscrewing from shaft. Any help there?please.

    • @ShedTV
      @ShedTV  Год назад

      Ratshit. I see what you did there 🤣 I've not sucessfully relocated the jaws, they usually move because they're worn on the back edge, so they'll jump again ever if you do get it together. I made another video where I go through the whole chuck removal and replacement process in detail: ruclips.net/video/5RchQ066_yQ/видео.html

      I just had the same problem, basically new Makita DHP458 (immaculate still) and i couldnt release the drill bit. This video enabled me to get it out, thanks!
      I always tighten and release the bits just by holding the chuck and torqueing it on the trigger on screwdriver setting, didnt realise you can just turn the chuck by hand! (9:54 in the video), first attempt it released!

    • @ShedTV
      @ShedTV  3 года назад

      @@unshackledsailing950 That’s good. I think what can happen with the big metal chucks is that they make little grooves on the bit, this makes it harder to realise.
