The Ink Spots sing "I'd Climb The Highest Mountain" at the Cafe Zanzibar on Broadway at 49th street in New York City circa 1946. These outtakes were filmed for a short film about nightclubs in New York called "March of Time". The Ink Spots left to right are Billy Bowen, Bill Kenny, Herb Kenny & Charlie Fuqua with Ray Tunia on Piano. The orchestra is directed by Claude Hopkins (seen standing behind group).
Heard these guys in Fallout and have been obsessed with them since - what a beautiful, unique voice. And such a happy seeming man.
Yes. These musicians were something very special.

hahah same
Yeep thanks fallout 🤣🤣 but anybody knows why always the melody of the songs has the same sound?

Thank you fallout 😊
so awesome!
I've only heard Krusty the Clowns version so far...this is quite moving
If you're reading this, you have an amazing taste in music.
You know me so well ☮️🤟✌️
I believe these men are divinely inspired.
thanks El Duderino
thanks you also have really good taste then
So do you ❤😊😊
3:28 me trying to annoy my friend while they're on the phone
I was born in 1946, in East Elmhurst, NY. I lived on Butler Street and 29th. On the corner. We move to long island in 1952-53. .. But our grandparents lived on Butler Street until my great grandmither died in 1964. My sister and I thought it was so great that a "Celebrity" lived across the street on the corner, from us. Our grandmother loved music, and would tell us one of the Ink Spots lived there. We played their music all the time. Their music brings back so many memories!
thats incredible
What a interesting story to hear, proves how small the world is.
Your story is incredible, and I love it, I'm from Scotland, soon to be 28 born in 1996, I was introduced to this sound from the game fallout 3 (my favourite game series) introduced to me in 2008 and played the absolute death out of it when I was 11ish?I fell in love with it all, and undertook the assignment to understand it all! these days this music is my vocabulary, and can happily say I cannot wait to introduce my daughter to Danny Kaye, the Andrew sisters, Marty Robbins, the ink spots and a hundred more, this music has to be immortalised in history because it's the best and always will be.

Never would've guessed the lead singer was so animated and expressive. Incredible performance. Amazing footage.
That there is Bill Kenny. He ended up having a pretty good solo career!
See the dark skinned guy sitting behind the group strumming guitar? I'm 99% sure that's Bernie Mackey who not long before this, filled in for Fuqua who was in the army. Mackey came back very briefly in the early 50s, then joined Deek Watsons spin off group in the mid 50s... then led and was a member of various spin off groups until he died.
Has to be after October 1945, since this lineup is after Hoppy died, Deek was forced out, Charlie is back from the Army and Billy Bowen is there along with Herb on bass. Original lineup in 34 was Jerry Daniels, Hoppy, Charlie, Deek. Jerry was replaced by Bill Kenny in 36 and that was the lineup for most of the hits until Charlie went to the Army as Austin said.
GREAT THANKS FOR THIS DOCUMENT

Fallout 3 got me into the ink spots. Legendary band from a legendary time period. They don’t make them like they used to. Thanks for uploading
I started to like jazz when my brother-in-law gifted me with fallout 3 and now I can't stop listening to jazz before going to bed.
i can't believe this group exceeds most nowadays modern boyband. the music is easy for ear and heart.
Why even drag boy bands into the conversation? There's nothing wrong with liking both. I like both. Does that make me somehow tasteless?
@@nevaladder no this just means you are one fanatic facist which cannot stand others opinion.

Brilliant. Bill Kenny is a GENIUS, and only Herb could pull off that patter with such earnest and class. Would love to see a live of "World On Fire."
I can't believe I didn't find this video before now, I always thought how it was a real shame that The Ink Spots would probably never catch a video recording due to a whole number of reasons. Thank you for uploading this!
I can't believe you didn't find this video before now too! Lol I thought when I uploaded this it would get 10,000 in the first week. I often wonder why it has such a low view count. I know a few people on Twitter and Facebook have copied it and uploaded it to their accounts... perhaps that's the reason. It makes no difference to me. I'm just glad that it's available! If I ever come across more footage of them in the future you can bet I'll share it here first. And here's a playlist I made of all of the footage of them available here on RUclips... maybe you haven't seen a few of these either. ruclips.net/p/PL3C9234E70AE04B17
@@AustinCasey my man, u are such an angel for giving us this playlist
Black artists are the most established in our music industry. They have so much influence on our culture; they deserve their roses 1000%.
It’s undeniable that black people are responsible for some of the greatest music ever created as a whole.
everyone looks so done with bill kenny at 3:36
"we get it, you can sing high notes, let herb have his moment"
Lmaoo dude you just made my day way better 😂
Give him a break. They know he sings tenor, that's what made them so famous. Credit where it's due, please.
...which is not to say that each of them makes the whole. I love the deep, gentle voice of Herb and how I wish time could stand still so artists like these could still be here. But, it looks silly to envy one of them for what he does best...
Teafed didn’t get that vibe at all
@@luciferscatmilk Did anyone expect Teafed would??
That is just incredible. Perfect falsetto, voices of angels!
I am tripping out on how great these guys are. From the 1940s!!! And it is shocking all the great tv and films they have been featured on. My 11 year old reminded me of them, I am in my 50s. Imagine creating something so beautiful almost a hundred years ago.
I love the ink spots.
who doesn't
Everyone back then: The ink spots? Who's that? (Don't take it serious lol)
Everyone today: The ink spots? Yeah, I know them from fallout 4 and they're lit ashell
You don't say that someone like the ink spots are "lit as hell" they are not some wannabe mumble rapper....
Everyone knew them back then. They where in fallout 3 and new vegas as well you just hear them in fallout 4. I see where you were going with this but most of the people coming to watch this on here prolly have never hear of fallout they have only heard of the band lol
Dave Wrench89 to be fair I first heard of the group from playing fallout 3, I then imported the album ‘we 4’ while working at a music store about 8 years ago (I live in New Zealand) and have listened to a fair amount of their music. There’s no denying the fallout series have garnered the ink spots more exposure and more fans as a result
Big, tall guy hits high falsetto notes. Young, thin guy has old man bass voice. My head canon did not match reality.
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Wonderful group, & timeless outstanding music, I love The
Inkspots!
This gentleman paved the way to many vocal groups to followed in the next decade know as Doo Wop. Thank you for such good harmonies to my ear and heart.
thanks to fallout Radio for showing me such a Masterpiece
talent! BOY OH BOY the talent of yesterdays musical performers.. look at em go with no special effects just what theyve learned and picked up as times gone on... you dont see the same thing in todays top performers man... i highly value the musical talent performed live for an audience, strip away the special effects and music machines just show me skill like this
They were smooth as silk
Nice
thank you fallout
These guys were so talented
Sad to think every one of those talented people on stage most likely are gone from this planet earth. Maybe everyone in this video are all gone since everyone here are 21 in age and older.
Sadly, the last member died on 2009. Wish i could meet them back in the day.
Fallout 4 is still my favourite game it's so memorable.
true musicians rip 🤧
First heard of these gentlemen in Watchmen from 2019. Never heard such beauty.
Just stunning! What a beautiful sound. Where is this kind of talent today?
Unfortunately music this era isn't as well thought out.

retakes and all this is great!
That's the problem with today's society we never appreciate the splendour of the past enough, until we hear or see something that gives us a moment to think and investigate. But that's also the good about today's society that we are willing to do just that and then appreciate that past in aspects we had no idea were such a wonder to behold. Bill Kenny's vocals is one of those....just incredible.
like who doesn't love the ink spots
Probably close minded people who only listen to one genre
Man this is real talent! Big respect to these artist's they are immortal
very very touching ... i cant stop crying this is just amazing
The Ink Spots should be considered one of the greatest singing groups in the last one hundred years. I certainly do'
This is 2020 and most of us are house bound because of Covid19. This video brings some joy into this time
Absolutely, all the best friend! ☮️💜🤟
This was great music. I’m 75, I grew up listening to them, and the Mills Brothers and others. No stupid antics, no fowl language, no jumping around, no butt twerking or crotch grabbing. The “singers” today should watch and learn.
Bill Kenny was a class act. The Ink Spots are my all time favorite group. Bless them. 🙏🏻
foul
Everyone is talking about hearing this band on Fallout, but I heard it first on Megadeth- Set the World on Fire.
This is the first time I've heard their voice speaking normally
This is just utterly gorgeous. Love the Ink Spots but I've only just seen this...incredible live sound, and Bill Kenny is so beautifully expressive (in terms of his stage presence as well as vocally). The dude on bass (is that Bill's brother?) is just so cool too. Incredible to me they could sound this good live (and this is live...no lip-synching!). Thank you for posting, a complete joy to behold.
The ink spots in a wild and hilarious name for a black band.
U think so?
Never thought about it that way 😂😂😂😅
they were well aware of choosing their name.
Bill Kenny the greates voice same elvis and howlin wolf 👍👍👍👍👍
I've been a gigging musician since age 15, in 1967. I just discovered the Ink Spots, and I'm smitten. Lead singer Bill Kenney has got to be THE BEST tenor singer ever. His precision, charm, and entertainment quotient is unequaled. I feel uplifted every time I hear his voice.
These men have such soothing voices it's honestly very pleasent to listen to.
This is the same stage where Hoppy Jones (the original bassist/deep voice guy) collapsed and died.
He collapsed here but I believe he died later at the hospital. Thanks for pointing this out I actually never considered that the 1 million times I've watched this. Thanks!
Who didnt like this ?! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
The man on the far left is my favorite.
Bill Butterball Bowen 😊
when I was young boy my Uncle loved to sing Ink Spots songs (solo) at family gatherings. loved the group ever since. CDs now available, and I also found a second hand Vinyl record recently. In great condition considering it was released almost 60 yrs ago.
Tony Williams of the Platters was a great lead singer, but I think Bill Kenny was better...
La música más bella de la historia
You know he loved singing with how he moved his head whole doing it, really took it seriously and i love that

"The ... BEST !!!"
All four men were good, but Bill Kenny was in a class by himself.

Discovered these cats yesterday. That lead singer has me shook
It’s horrifying to think that everyone in this video is dead.
There may be people in the audience that are alive today (in 2022). Any 21 year old there would be 96 today. Certainly not impossible. In 10 years your assumption might be more accurate though.

heard them in teriyaki god
Que maravilla de canción, aunque no soy de la época siento muchas cosas increíbles con cada segundo de esta canción
My question is why they started every song the same way? Lmfao they brought the 4 chords and overused melodies stigma that we have today but back in the 40s
With all due respect, you're entirely wrong. None of the songs they recorded had the same melody. None of the songs they recorded had the same chord changes. They sang songs with 32 bar forms. Each song has probably a dozen chords, maybe more depending on the song. The only thing they kept pretty constant was their intro (which still had variations) and their format of high tenors lead, spoken 2nd chorus, and lead taking it out. They followed a format but their music was far more sophisticated than the Pop music we hear today... or that we've heard since the 60s for that matter. But don't be confused... there were Pop critics in the 40s too who criticized them for their commercialism and formula. They didn't care. They did what they loved.
Why does it keep cutting ?
I think they wanted to show them from different perspectives😅
Pick up shots, one from afar showing them enter the stage, one close up showing them start and finish the song, stitch the two together and overlay a spliced audio of the two you get a seamless version that looks like multi-camera, very efficient
I love ❤️ these old Fred G. Sanford songs.
