  • “It’s a message not just to the politicians. It's a message to the French industrialists as well, that: we have you in our sights.”
Despite China’s “divide and conquer” tactics, the EU is maintaining a “united front” in upholding tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, says former BBC China reporter Robin Brant.

As always, a very clear but informative broadcast. It clarifies the EU vs China battle at the moment. We should boycott Chinese EVs as they are threatening our industrial base.

The Chinese make all the BMW's, Volvo's, Mercedes etc, they even own the brands that might be made elsewhere like Land Rover, Rolls Royce etc, so all this is just talk, closing the door after the horse has bolted!
China is in an economic war with the West. Autocrats like Russia and China play us for the long game, and our politicians are too weak to deal with it.
      Rant over.

The Chinese Hi-so buy Hennessey and Louis Vuitton because its expensive and they want to show off, so making it more expensive isn't going to have that big an impact.

99.9% of French people, and indeed Europeans in general, don't need or consume these luxury brands, so should not care what China does.

@@CSILon96 The tariffs are the response, they are just retaliating to the subsidies. In Europe it's more likely to be luxury brands doing bullying that car brands. The US definitely does these kinds of subsidies on some of their exports, not usually on their cars, which are not in much demand in most parts of the world..

All European governments do subsidize their "green industries". The difference is that China CCP directly subsadizes those companies wehereas EU governments do it indirectly by guaranteeing the companes' loans. At the end of the day, both mechanisms end up pumping money into this branch. We should instead learn from the Chinese how to produce efficiently with low costs.

@@panchovilla5940 labor cost is of course one of the major costs but it should not fool us. In today's modern auto industry, over 90% of the job is done by robots and highly-skilled engineers that program them. Their salaries are way higher than the 2 bucks you say. We have lost our R&D engineering capacity to China. They have learnt our know-hows and now they are doing things more efficiently than us. We should re-build our engineering and industrial base.
