Steam in Bosnia 2019

- Steam-hauled service trains is today not normal at all in Europe but some spots remain where steam locomotives are used on a regular basis, shunting and sometimes venturing on the mainlines, as is the case in a number of collieries, in Bosnia where is video is from can you see the former Yugoslavian Railways classes 33 and the shunting engines 19-12 and 62-125 in the mains around Tuzla and the narrow gauge mainline from Banovici whit the narrow gauge engines 25-30, 55-99 and the 83-159. The tour was arranged by Tanogo Tours from 30 October to 2 November 2019.
The Deutsche Reichsbahn built these in the middle of the war using simpler construction techniques and fewer precious metals as a stripped-down variant of the Class 50 freight locomotive in common use at the time. Even the Germans must be surprised that their service has lasted into this century
Especially with a projected 10 year service life
German engineering was (and still is ) superior. It was what Japanese engineering is today.
apaitu
In Austria, they were used until 1976. My father was working on such machines for a little time at the end of the 60's.
Its projected to be 10 years working but look at it now, still going strong even after the WW2
The worlds most prolific steam locomotive class, the German "Kreigslok" (DR Class 52) with around 21,000 built across numerous countries during WW2. So obviously quite a number are also preserved in a number of countries, in addition to Germany. I drove one at Stassfurt (steam centre), an old DR Roundhouse, with a mile or so of running line, just to the East of the Harz mountains in the old East German zone. The "official driver" was a Dutch Railways driver, who spoke English, but the Fireman was a young German who declared his loco was being invaded by the Allies, im stark Deutsch (in strong German) !
Of course Stassfurt is only a 25 minute drive east, of the famous Harz Mountain Railway (HSB) and its 100km network of steam hauled routes, subsidized by the EU as an official public transport network. The HSB use a fleet of 66tonne 2-10-2T on metre gauge, along with a couple of now extremely rare 0-4-0+0-4-0T Mallet tank locos, in all year round service. One of their lines climbs to the 4,002ft summit (by normal adhesion) of the famous Brocken Mountain. Of course the Harz mountains are probably more famous for the infamous Valpurgis Nacht (Night of the witches) every 31st of April. When for hundreds of years it has been the tradition for all the most beautiful girls in EVERY town and village to run naked through the streets at midnight. This of course attracts around a Million tourists to the area on this day every year ! Re-enactment of the classic play "Faust" on the Brocken mountain top on this day, complete with all the debauchery included (banned in Britain) allows the HSB to operate into the early hours, as its the only way to reach the summit, unless you want to be eaten by mountain lions & wild boar !!!!!

Just visited these locomotives over Halloween this year. An experience I will never forget. Wad amazing!
tell me more please! do you have contacts there in Tuzla, and do you know if they are still operated by the coal mines?
@@krimskrams I don't have contacts I'm afraid, but I do know that a German touring company y have prga used a Plandampf for October this year with all their steam locomotives so they still must be running. They had pretty much all of them out when I went and that was last October the 28th 2021
@@matthewpalmer2049 the details are pretty scarce on the tanago website. the German description reads "as far as they are able to plan it" so it's not even certain that these locos will be operational until that point. there is no price listed either, so I guess they are still waiting for a go ahead or something. I hope I can see it for myself though
@@krimskrams when I went, 2 of the 52s were running, one is in an overhaul and one in for a boiler washout. The 33 was running, and one of the narrow gauge tenders.
@@krimskrams there are also FarRail Tours there are planing at toure to see the steam in april :-)
The last regular serving steamers ... not of the noble 01, 03, 11 or 18 but ordinary 52s.
But look how beautiful they are, unpolished but reliable and industrious 🙂
Nice Kasper i'm from Bosnia and trains like that are very rare to see in our country😋
This is a place i could feel comfortable in. A bottle of Zmaj Pivo and these steam hauled consists!
Great footage, beautiful sound. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
It's interesting to see they're using the two engines running back to back technique.
Beautiful shots! Great machines!
Hi - I'm very interested in using some clips from this video in a video I'm preparing about the BR52 Kriegslok. I have over 1.6 million subscribers and in return for permission I will give full credit and provide a link to your channel for my subscribers to visit. Look forward to your reply. Mark
Hallo Mark I have no problem whit that so you can just use what you want from my video to your video about the BR 52 Kriegslok 🙂 i'm looking forward to see it 🙂
@@Kaspertog Excellent! I'll send you the link when I've published. Thanks for your assistance.
Hey mark, saw that video! Came here looking for you, i guess i found you! Have a good one!😁👌
I must admire your drive to spread neutral knowledge about ww2 technology, incidents and how they could possibly affect our modern day lives or those lives that lived back then.
Hi Mark,we are still waiting for " Halyard mission" episode on your channel. Thanks
In Sweden the last steam locomotives came out of their mobilization shed in 2008 but the last mainline use of steam had been in 1972 and the last industrial use of steam engines had been in 1978.
The best steam locomotives had been kept in mobilisation sheds to be mobilized in case of a war in Europe until 1992.

Very nice video, Kasper, with the steamtrains.
Thank You and Thumbs Up.
Have a nice sunday.

as nice as it is seeing theese german ladies still operating. they do look like they are barely cleaned..... in germany you will mainly see perfectly clean steam locos.
also that at 2:12 ..... that cant be good for their wheels, keeping them locked and letting them just slide on the tracks
Germany uses steam locos for turistic trains and no tourist would ride any train pulled by a dirty engine.
The dirt keeps the rust off

Herlig video med damplok til overflod :-)
1:58 Didnt know a locomotive in reality couldnt wheel slip THAT FAR
yeah that engine slid a good 200 feet
I also think it was wild to see how far it slides. The reason is a mixture of carbon dust and oil that makes the rails smooth and thereby makes the train slide silently away.
@@Kaspertog and when silly buggers challenge trains at level crossings
they want to see that and tell them that was at 5kmh.
Awesome! If diesel price goes down, which I fear it won't, that could be place to visit while driving from Nordic to Greece. With that old '92 VW T4 with projected life expectancy of 10 years too. ;-)

Steam locomotives of the class 33 with many 2 axle type Es freight cars loaded with coal! This is just nice.
New Bosnian High Speed Rail 🔥🔥🔥🇧🇦🇧🇦🇧🇦
I hope this doesn't get too much publicity, so that these engines can work for a long time without being withdrawn for environmental reasons
I do not think you have to worry about the climate being a big factor down there, because the coal mined goes directly to the coal power plant in Tuzla as their only energy source and the economy is so bad that it is cheaper to use the steam locomotives than to replace them with diesel :-)
These are former DRB Class 52 locomotives, right?

That moment when the matrix is lagging...
Are they still in service now (2022) ? I heard recently the last industrial steam in China at Sandaoling has finally ended, and Bosnia is a lot easier and cheaper to get to! I'd love to go and see it
There should still be active driving with steam in the mines around Tuzla and the two railway experience companies Tanago and FarRail Tours are planning an excursion there in 2022. The steam locomotives are only used for shunting in the mines. And about steam in China I am unsure but i believe that the last run of steam in the Sandaoling mine was ending at the end of 2019.
Really amazing video.
Superbe vidéo. Je pense que c'est à Tuzla.
Hi, great video and thanks for sharing this video of working steam in action in the 21st Century.
Do you know if these locos are still running in 2024? I was planning to visit if they were. Best Regards from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks for you comment :-)
About the Bosnia Steam locomotives are there still in use in 2024 but only ad the coal mines in Dubrave, Šikulje, Banovići where there also have the narrow gauge network. The big former Germans build steam locomotives can only been seen at the coal mines in Dubrave and Šikulje but there only run whit them a few times each day inside the area. They are not used on the main railways anymore. The depot of the steam locomotives are in Bukinje, close to Tuzla, where is normaly possible to buy acsses to from the workshop manager. But if you what to have the full experience then I would recommend going on one of the photo excursions there. FarRail Tours have one in October (18.10.2024 - 23.10.2024) It was on a photo excursion I went on in 2019 and can only recommend it. Since the yield if you go down there yourself is quite small. Best regards Kasper
@@Kaspertog Hi Kasper, Many thanks for giving me the inside of what’s happening with the BR52’s on the coal mines near Tuzla. I will for sure check out the tour organised by Farrail. May these awesome machines keep going for as long as possible. Best Regards Eren

wow this is so awesome...are these still used in freight service there today?
yeah
Yes but only in the mines not on the main railways anymore.
Can I visit the mines by my own?
How come at 2:02 the side railes on the seam engine are not moviong but the train is?
Because the other side of the train's cylinder is still working properly, and the side you see at 2:02; the wheels are sliding on the tracks.
@@parachuteguy3992 - That can't be good!!
@@nightlightabcd its done on locomotives that only get used for shunting. most likely the cylinder on the right of one of their more useable BR52s is busted so they removed it from this locomotive as theres a lack of spare parts
I think the breaks are on to stop the movement, but it takes some time because of the weight of the cargo.

The Steam locomotives are still runding but only in the mines, where most of the videos are from :-)
@@Kaspertog Thank you. One more question, is there access to where the trains are moving or passing? Would love to fly there, drive and see them work.
@@francoiselesensuelite6884 there is not really any access to the mines without permission, but it is possible to see them on the legal side of the gate in Sikulje, and from a small road at the end of the mine in Dubrave. But the runs are very minimal. I was down there with the Tanago Tour who arranged permission and extra shunting and lot of ohter things on the tour.
@@Kaspertog Excellent info, thank you very very much! I may try the tour, I may do it on my own. Appreciated it greatly.
Why does steam come out from it from both sides close to the ground, that seems to decrease visibility why don't they put out all steam from the top
short answer: so it doesnt blow up. long answer: spend 10 minutes of your life reading about steam locomotives in wikipedia
To think those were only intended for a ~10 year lifespan…and tjeyre still running today! Thats precision german Engineering right there!
Are these steam-locomotives still active?
Yes, still. They haul coal to the biggest power plant in Bosnia. They even have a facility where they maintain them so that they will remain in service for years to come.
@@heyyo162 Thanks. 👍
