We have a 2016 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Sport w/ 54k miles. We are very thankful for all the details you gave on this very creative, low cost solution. For our repair, we used the 1/4” nozzle on the reflow heat gun, positioned an inch from the chip (With a square cut out in aluminum foil, masking the rest of the board still inside the aluminum housing) starting 250C for one minute stepping up to 300C for three minutes ending at 310C for an additional two minutes, we let the unit cool down for 45 minutes installed it and the ACC error went away. Once everything was reinstalled, we took our car out on the freeway to do a verification test and everything is functioning perfectly. From start to finish it took us one hour to complete the entire disassembly repair and reassembly process.
Note: as other commenters Have recommended we used a large plier to apply grip to the widest point on the rearview mirror mount grip it tightly and did a quarter turn counterclockwise to remove the rearview mirror without incident.

Thank you for posting this video...I have been waiting for the camera to come in from the VW dealership so they could "fix" this issue and charge me another $1500 on top of the $500 diagnostic fee for 2 months now. Saw this tutorial this past Friday, ordered the heat gun kit from Amazon. Came in on Saturday. Did the repair this Sunday morning early before going ot church ... AND IT WORKED!!!. Did all the details that were presented. Heated it at 610 degrees F for 3 1/2 minutes. Let it cool down about 20 minutes...all in all about an hour of effort. I really appreciate the details you had in the video, plus the link to parts, etc. It emboldened me to try the fix. You are doing good work in sharing your knowledge with the rest of us...especially when the fix is quick and inexpensive and the parts are literally years away from shipping.

Gotta tell you, you're my hero. I've been living without cruise control on my 16 Touareg for a year with VW continuing to say the camera is back ordered (their analysis of what was needed). I followed your procedure exactly though I used a wagner 750 heat gun and put on a focused nozzle. Did 600 degrees farenheit for exactly 3 minutes with the nozzle at about 2 inches from the chip moving back and forth (side to side). Reinstalled and now works perfectly. Thank you, simply thank you!! Not sure how you figured this out but based on the below, you have saved several people a lot of money - something to be proud of. Well done!!

Have a 2016 7P6 Touareg and after watching your video numerous times and gaining enough courage to attempt this, I bit the bullet and decided to have a go. What is there to lose? Purchased a hot air reflow gun and followed your instructions. After cooling down, I put the module back into the car and hit the start button. No more chimes and the systems all work again. I ran a VCDS scan and no more error codes for the first time in 2 years.

Thanks! You saved me a lot of money too, but I didn't tabulate it. I only spent about $38 on Amazon for a simple solder reflow workstation. (Basically a temperature controlled solder iron with a heat gun.)
The trickiest part was with the plastic sun shield / heat shield that fits in with the camera module, at least with my 2013 A6 3.0 TSI. Mine was very brittle and was already broken by somebody, so it fell out when the module came out. It took some patience and some superglue and some tape to hold it up before reinstalling the camera.
I used a different heating protocol on the Xilinx processor chip. I warmed it up at normal low end soldering temperature, about 265C, for about 30 sec, ramped it up to the high end for soldering at 285C for 150 sec and finished with 310C for 60 seconds. This worked on the 1st try; the car immediately recognized it and cleared the error.
It's not surprising that a processor chip sitting under the sun all day for several years would undergo temperature cycling that could stress and crack a couple soldering joints and need resoldering. Maybe that's why the weird little trim piece (4G8907225A) is there; to block the sun hitting the camera module.

    • @rhetoricByEric
      @rhetoricByEric 8 месяцев назад

My method failed after a week. Instead I tried a one minute warmup at 265C and then 310C for 3 minutes and brought it back to life. It's been a couple days so far.

Worked like a charm on my 2016 V6 Touareg Exec!!! This from a girl who did the entire process, start to finish, on my own.
Dash message first showed up a year ago…dealership quoted me $1,100 plus to install a new camera. I found your video after someone posted it in a Touareg Facebook forum, and figured I had nothing to lose. Worst case, it didn’t work and I could order a new camera myself and do the install. I found one new for $550 at a dealership one state over.
Had the camera out, fixed and back in under 30 min. Worst part for me was getting the rear view off and back on again. Takes some force, but I knew that from reading other comments here.
Used a $30 rework tool from Amazon and a cheap torque screwdriver set. All told, $40 vs $1,100 plus.
    245c for 1 min. 320c for 3 min.
    I cannot thank you enough!

Amazing. 2016 Touareg with the ACC issue and this resolved. $30 tool from amazon and 3 mins on 300c. I left things disassembled since a few have said they need to repeat the process a week to 10 days later. In addition to just working the OBD error goes away after a post fix scan. I should also note that I did the fix without completely disconnecting the camera in case you want to leave in place to eliminate chance of breaking a variety of plastic clips. 🎉

This worked on mine as well, but as an electronics repairer I wouldn't recommend doing this in place (without removing from the car) because you are relying on gravity to work FOR you when heating up the solder to re-bond so you REALLY want gravity to be pushing down on this chip from the top when the solder melts.

I've bought my '17 Touareg a year ago and my lane assist/ACC has never worked. Dealer wanted $2500 to install a new camera and align/recalibrate the entire system. Glad I waited because I just found this video and today I got my camera working again. Disassembly was a little challenging for my first time but not that difficult. Mirror was really tough to get off, I'd recommend a large wrench or pliers to give you some added leverage to coax it off. Turn it counterclickwise just like the video says and it will pop off, it's held on by 4 metal spring clips that snap over a mount underneath it. I took a little more time to reheat the chip on my camera. 30 secs at 265c, 150 sec at 285c, then 60 sec at 310c. I went a step further and did 4 additional mins at 330c. Also, my heat rework gun has an adjustable fan, I wasn't sure where to set the fan speed so I just put it at medium. Normally I might have hesitated before tackling this repair, but since my dealer did confirm the camera was the problem, I felt pretty good about this solution. Terrific step by step instructions on this procedure, thank you for a good video.

Thank you for this valuable video! After watching your video, I removed the circuit board and took it in to a local computer repair shop to have them follow the video and apply the heat (300 degrees Celsius) using their more sophisticated heating device and magnifying software. They only charged me $25. I reinstalled it and it's fixed. You saved me about $900.

Incredible. This method worked great and fixed the issue. Removing the rear view mirror was a real pain - had to use a pliers to twist off. 310ºc for 3 minutes and installed once cooled. I did not remove the ribbon and did not have issues with it when heating. Re-install was easy. Thank you for the video. Saved me $2,000.

Thank you so much! The idiot dealers wanted to charge me 5000 dollars to change both sonars and insisted that was the issue. Your fix worked, although I winged it with a heat gun and guesstimated the temp. Maybe 45 seconds at 300 plus.. Bottom line it worked. Thank you!!

    • @DeanMackin-TNTRadio
      @DeanMackin-TNTRadio Месяц назад

Yes, 3 minutes is way too long. Once the gun gets to the indicated temperature it only takes seconds for the solder to melt and subsequently re-bond after you take the heat away (which only takes seconds). This damage happens a lot here in Australia as it is not uncommon to have days here where it is almost 50 degrees Celcius (and sometimes over) in Summer, so that camera gets really hot inside, especially when parked in direct sunlight without the wind to cool the windscreen in the moving vehicle. This is a brilliant fix! Thanks.

Easiest to get it off with some wide grip pliers on these spots. Both for on and off. I also found that putting the big plastic cover on first really helped. Make sure not to pinch the wires as you put the mirror back. Amazing. Saved ~$1500+.

You Da Man! I am the sort that CANNOT abide anything not working on my vehicles. The hardest part of this was getting the mirror off. I ended up using a pliers handle for everage both off and on. the second hardest part was waiting for the housing to cool. Starting it up and seeing Systems Nominal was indeed exhilerating. I am astounded VW isn't on to this. The replacement was covered by my extended warranty and the tab would have been $1,500-1,800. They could charge $500 all day long and get it. My outside mechanic didn't want to touch it but I bet he will now! Thanks again!

Thank you so much for this video! I have a 2016 Touareg TDI Lux and for the past 2 years my ACC and lane assist would come on and off while driving. About 3 months ago the ACC assist error code became a permanent chime every time I would crank it. I stumbled across this video, ordered a heat gun from Amazon for $16 (the Diafield 1850), set it at 600 degrees F for 3 minutes, and then reconnected camera and it works! Took it for a short test drive and everything was working great. Was nervous about removing mirror and camera but I took it slow and easy and everything came apart and went back in fine. Hopefully it will last. Thanks for saving me some big money.
UPDATE: After 5 days, the dreaded light came back on and so I did the same procedure again but heated gun up to 700 degrees for 3 minutes. Warning lights are off and ACC is working fine after 3 days of use. Hopefully, the second round will fix it for good.

Started off with 1 minute in the 200-250 Celsius range, followed by 2 minutes at 300C. Let it cool off and reassembled. The plastic backing on the windshield bracket assembly that is between the glass and the camera chassis was so brittle it cracked and fell apart while I was reinserting the camera. Used super glue and gaffers tape to salvage it. I live in So Cal and the direct sun cooks the camera and all the plastic around it, the camera chassis is hot to touch just from the sunlight. There needs to be a better way of insulating this area.

Hi. Had the same trouble trying to get my mirror off. It is on VERY tight. I used robo grip pliers to twist it off and remove it (squeeze gently just enough to grip the mirror, but not so much to crack the plastic). If you have a large enough adjustable wrench, that might work even better. It still takes some effort but it gave me just enough leverage to make it turn and pop off. Like the video says, use a counterclockwise motion. It will come off! Good luck.

Hi! I also have a 2017 Wolfsburg Edition with 98k miles. Just did this today and as soon as I reinstalled the repaired camera, all of the errors were gone. These cameras are $750-1000 (US) and frequently on a very long backorder. This ended up being a terrific fix for me.

This is the best news I have heard after digging through a ton of threads on the topic. I have an OBDII dongle but only get some generic info about it. Does anyone know if these codes relate to this fix:
    93440 [0x016D00]
U111300: Function limitation due to received malfunction value
    FAULT_CIS_VIDEO_FAIL
    Status bits: 1

    Unlearning index: 184
    Odometer: 95803 km

Thanks for this video! With these parts backlogged forever this is a huge help.
    2015 VW Touareg
    I just tried resoldering with:
    245 X 60 seconds
    310 X 180 seconds
Plugged it all back in and still getting the same warning.
Any thoughts or suggestion on wast to ensure the resoder works? @cashfixescars
