  • We take a favourite walk from Vindolanda Roman fort up onto Hadrian’s Wall to Housesteads fort and back. In summer it’s possible to reach Vindolanda by the AD122 bus or by car but the car parks are for use by visitors only to Vindolanda with an entrance ticket. The site is one of the highlights of a Hadrian’s Wall visit and is highly recommended www.Vindolanda.com #HadriansWall #Vindolanda #RomanBritain #Housesteads

Its worth mentioning that the milestone is often missed by visitors as it is not actually on the Vindolanda site, its across the road from the back entrance.

Thank you both for sharing your walk. I’d love to walk it this summer! Any recommendations for a non local?

The AD122 bus runs from spring to autumn and is a marvellous resource for doing linear walks a calls at all the main locations. Book your accommodation well in advance as there isn’t a huge amount of choice close to the wall but the bus offers a chance to stay in Hexham or Haltwhistle and bus in

Another enjoyable stroll, thank you! Is the milestone accessible from the site of Vindolanda itself? I remember seeing the replica down near the museum and it said it was so many metres away, but not how to reach it. I haven't been to Milking Gap but will do so in the future, this looks like a great walk.

Hi if you exit the main museum by the entrance and walk to where the drive meets the lane and turn left at the bottom of the hill is a gate and stile and the milestone is just inside the field, just a minutes walk. There’s also a stump of a milestone as you drive down the Stanegate to the west gate still in situ
