      I miss when you could just plug in a cord or even just put in CDs. Then there’s even those stupid cars that to open the glove compartment you need to use the touchscreen when a handle would be a million times easier.

    For the Selena Gomes music video: It’s not uncommon for huge/mainstream creators to copy the work of smaller creators. But it’s normally not the singer that does it. It’s the director of the music vid or producer or someone like that. The artist is normally none the wiser and just going with the idea.

    I've found that using touchscreens requires me to focus more on what I'm pressing. Physical buttons let me feel for where I'm trying to press and it's easier to memorize exactly where I need to press, whereas touchsceens require me to confirm with my eyes that I'm hitting the right thing.

      The only reason it works well on smartphone keyboards is because it's a fixed width and we can use proprioception to tell where the buttons are supposed to be. With car touchscreens, we're kinda just tapping at a random point in space, without proprioception, so the only way to tap consistently correctly is by having ridiculously large buttons or looking directly at it

When I used to cashier at my job the physical keyboard buttons would make a noise every time I pressed one and it was just a keypad so I didn't have to look at it to know what I was pressing. After getting promoted I still cashier a little bit here and there but now that everything is touchscreen nothing makes a single sound and I have no idea what I'm touching if I am not looking at it. For the Selena Gomez story a lot of those seem like massive stretches. Anyone shooting in those same locations is going to come up with similar shots and framings just based on how the room is arranged, there’s only so many ways to frame a person sitting on couch against a wall with a single picture. I think at most someone saw Sarah’s work and that’s what inspired them to choose that location, and then subconsciously that may have influenced some of the design choices. But that’s just how art works, everyone is inspired by and draws ideas from everyone else. The bar for calling something plagiarism needs to be much higher than “dancing in a room with a fireplace”.

      I was going to include this in my comment. What you have to remember is that locations only offer so many shot options. Lighting, production, room shape, etc. play a lot into what rooms are used in a location shoot. When you scout a location you may be forced into certain angles to exclude elements that you do not want in your frame. Or maybe simply two creatives walked into a room with limiting composition options and framed their shots similarly. It happens all the time

    the whole point of having tactile buttons and knobs in a car is that you can control it without having to look away from the road. A touchscreen is a homogenous, sensitive surface so you can't tell what you're doing without looking and if a bump or a quick tap causes you to misinput you have to spend even more time to back out and get to what you actually needed. The only benefit I can think of is for GPS, music, and a backup camera, most of which can be handled by just connecting your phone before you start driving.

    • @puggirl415
      @puggirl415 11 месяцев назад +9

      So agree. I usually pick a less loaded car cos I'm not going to use most of the crap they load on and I don't want to deal with it breaking. I'm sure some touch screens are good but because these cars aren't as robust as my phone and they don't have good updates I don't want to mess with a touch screen. The car I have now had a system available but it was in 3g. I got the basic model instead without the touch screen and was gratified when they wanted us to pay money to get an upgrade so the thing would work in 4g. Bt now even that is dead so no I don't want technology in my car from companies that won't back up their tech with free, easy and good updates that don't brick the system or worse.

    • @modarkthemauler

    I agree 100% with the assessment of touch vs tactile controls in cars. In my car it's fan and temp controls that's the problem, since they are controlled from the screen and you have to press many times when going from hot to cold. Compared to just twisting a knob it requires more time and focus. It also means that I can't adjust temperatures while in reverse, because the reverse camera hijacks the whole screen. That sounds like a minor inconvenience but it actually comes up quite often.

    As someone who’s worked in the car industry for several years with a background in electronics and computers, it honestly scares me how much things are moving to touch screens and full electronic controls. Putting aside just the safety concerns of distracted driving, there are so many more reasons to not use these kinds of systems. Having key safety features locked away because your radio screen malfunctioned or being unable to safely shift into park due to the touch screen not functioning is a terrifying thought. Not to mention that some of these cars straight up have network capabilities now and could be vulnerable to attacks down the line. I can see it now cars being held in ransom for bit coin or the hacker will take away your ability to shift into gear. And don’t even get me started on the repair costs if something breaks.

      I have a 4runner, which I purchased recently, and was looking at Highlanders. I'm not sure what vehicle you were looking at but the Toyota vehicles only use touch screen for media and navigation. Which you would not be able to do tactile buttons for. Even the volume and radio channel is still controlled by dials. Everything else is controlled by buttons and dials. In fact, many people turn away from Toytoa products because they retain their "analog" styling, and people want something more modern.
      The Santa Fe on the other hand, can be stolen so very easily. I'd send you a link about the massive recalls, but RUclips frown on links in comments.

    In regards to the Selena story, when you read the headline my reaction was “omg this will be juicy” but when you played Sarah’s video of the comparisons, my reaction instead was “that’s it?” Creatives pull inspiration from everywhere. • @99Plastics

    • @airbrushpower
      @airbrushpower 11 месяцев назад +61

      I thought the same thing. There is no question that either Selena, the Director, or someone involved with the video is a fan of the original work, but you're right, creatives draw on inspiration all the time. I have worked in photography and video for years and the industry puts together inspiration boards and clips for projects they're working on more often than not.
      The other point I realised as I was typing this, is that the location is a place you can hire and the furniture is all already there. So when Sarah Bahbah said "there's Selena dancing around the exact same furniture"; well that furniture is there already. If you had've sourced it and dressed the set yourself thats one thing, but its like filming in front of a location on Hollywood boulevard, and then accusing artistic theft because someone else shot in the same location with the same building in the background.
      If its an accessible location, that you haven't dressed yourself, then its open to anyone...

      To be fair, it wouldn't be hard for a director to look at her video and then do "we can do a video like this" and just copying shots but changing things so it isn't just 1:1. I think she's quick to play the victim, but I still wouldn't be shocked if they did actually do it.

    • @xLostInTheCrowdx
      @xLostInTheCrowdx 11 месяцев назад +20

      It's absolutely not art theft. It is not similar enough for this to be a claim or case for her. It's crazy to me that people don't understand "If you've thought of something, there is 99% chance someone else has too" 100% reaching.
      It's possible either Selena or the director saw the artists work in the past, but even if that's the case it's not 1:1, there are very clear differences. It's like saying if I took a photo in a mirror, I then own all mirror photos and should be credited. The only way this would work is if I MADE the mirror, and they copied every aspect of the original work. They didn't do that. At all.

    The problem with seeing work that looks like yours is that unless it’s blatant or you can prove the copier is familiar with your work, you could just be drawing inspiration from the same source
    As someone who works in the entertainment industry you see it all the time. Audiences are always quick to compare the two works assuming one copied the other even when both creators have sighted the same source as inspiration
    There’s also accidental recreation where you start creating something thinking it’s original only to realise part way through you’re just recreating something similar you saw before. This is actually common enough that musicians even joke about accidentally writing songs that already exist

      The industry even has a term for it, "parallel thinking," because everyone is inspired by something, conscious or not, and eventually people all kind of arrive at similar ideas if things tend to look good or make certain impressions on people. Like with music for example, there are only so many chords and progressions and notes, and there are sounds that naturally flow and sound good together and songwriters can arrive at the same ones without ever hearing about each other.
      Not saying this is the case here, it's entirely possible the art direction of Selena's video was copied, I'm not the one with that information. But to think they absolutely couldn't both come up with the concepts...it's hard to argue without setting precedent that anything remotely similar can't happen. 100% originality will never exist again, but even 90% can't if we start calling everything similar a copy of whoever got to it first.

    Anyone who is pro touchscreens in cars... they boggle my mind.
    On those touchscreen cars, when the touchscreen breaks, or even just the electronics break or mess up, you lose everything. On an older car when the little knob breaks for the air-conditioning, the hazard lights or the windscreen wiper stick etc only 1 thing breaks, you don't lose every other function along with it. 1 button for each thing the machine does means if one part breaks ONLY that part breaks, they literally do this on almost all workplace machinery in warehousing, manufacturing, farm tractors, for that exact reason, 1 part breaks not ALL of it.

    About the Selena story: When i was in school my teacher used to say "Be carefull to scream copying unless you can put the art next to each other and they're identical" and this? Being a European that's the look people make when they try to get something to "look French or south European" especially the bathrobe breakfast thing, i've seen that so many times i can't count. Like in my opinion that's not copying? It's shot in the same place sure but that's about it? It look like stereotype French movie on both ends and where did the inspo for that come from? Falsely accusing people of stealing her "creations" seems to be Sarah Bahbah's mo.
      I used to be a fan of her but stopped years ago when she tried to pull a similar thing saying people were stealing her art for using captions/subtitles in their pictures as if she had created the concept like come on.
      Selena’s ‘Love On’ music video references the 1960s Italian film 'Contempt' starring French actress Brigitte Bardot, the inspiration is VERY clear, some shots, hairstyle, looks, the intro of the song is in French and the "silenzio" and “LA FINE” at the end… all clear references to the film and Brigitte.
      Also about the location, SO many artists have filmed there before Selena (Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Cardi B, Lady Gaga...)
      And the 'Back To You' music video is inspired by the 1965 French New Wave film Pierrot le Fou.

    Regarding the Taylor Swift story. As a Singaporean it irks me that the govt did that. I saw somewhere that 70% of those who are attending are from the neighbouring countries. When she announced her tour dates and venue and I saw SG is the only stop in SEA, i knew I had to compete with many more people for the tickets and guessed what, I missed out. What the SG govt did was selfish.
    Coldplay came to SG with 6 shows too and they had stops at our neighbouring countries and they still sold out and I met many fans who were from neighbouring countries that missed out shows in their country so they decided to fly in SG. That still created the tourism revenue that the SG govt craved so much. Regarding the Selena Gomez Story.
    The artist is claiming to be even more of a victim for being a POC even though Selena herself is a POC. Also at 3:58 her bringing up the fact while being a POC, she's also Palestinian felt unnecessary and seems like the only reason she said it was to easily gain public support cinsidering the all the drama Selena had about not properly supporting Palenstine.

    I think the Taylor Swift only touring in Singapore thing is less "is this selfish of Singapore to screw over neighbouring countries?" and more "Is Taylor Swift selfish for accepting that deal despite how well she knows her fanbase and how disappointing and enraging it would be for her fans?" Singapore didn't force or threaten Taylor (at least I hope not lmao) to only perform there; they offered her a business deal and she took it. I see little difference between Singapore "buying" Taylor and other countries "buying" sporting events, as you mentioned.
    To me, however, it is blatantly clear who people should be annoyed at, and that is Taylor. I'm not a Swiftie or mega fan, but I fully understand and feel the upset from her fans. I’m from there, moved down south a few years ago but yeah… nitrous and butane are obviously serious fire hazards and it’s puzzling as to why especially at night, although they probably have a night shift, those canisters aren’t in some kind of containment that would prevent a spreading fire from blowing them all up. The Selena thing is a great example of how derivative film is as an art form. That’s not an inherently bad thing, but it is when artist try to claim ownership over a style/aesthetic/movement.
    The language of film is an imitation of the composition and artistic values of visual art. That’s just how the camera communicates.
    My opinion on the video in question is that it doesn’t steal at all from the other filmmakers work. From the fonts used, to the framing, location and colour palette, these are not new ideas. Just an assembly of many old ideas which happened to speak to the artists involved. Nobodies stealing. That’s what art is.

      Eh I agree and disagree. I do think it’s hard to lay claim to shots or aesthetics, but she lined up multiple pretty uncanny parallels all within one video. For a shot to be pretty much the same in the same exact location multiple times throughout one music video is pretty suspect. I don’t necessarily think Selena herself knew she was copying as I kinda doubt she had much creative direction over the project, but I do think there was likely someone on the team who had seen the other artists’ music video in that location and used it heavily for inspiration. It’s just too many coincidences where, in an isolated context they would be just coincidences but this is a little too specific

    RE: Sarah/Selena
    I'm not denying the WoC often have their work ripped off without credit (Literally happens all the time!), and I cannot even say for certain the director never saw her work. But I think a lot of the examples she used were not strong enough to support her case. The aesthetic she has was common in films in the 50's, in France. The women mimicking art behind them was even done in Disney's Frozen. People in matching outfits, people making out... It's all been done by multiple visual artists. This woman's work, you could have told me it was a Lana Del Rey music video, and I would have believed you. The still images with the yellow text look like those 80's aesthetic anime screenshots with the subs on. Women with oversized sunglasses and towels on their head, that could be from any Instagram influencers trip to the Mediterranean.

    The Selena Gomez/Sarah Bahbah story raises an interesting dilemma in the space of art: The original thought is no longer truly possible. At this point, talent and merit in art is earned by taking an idea and best representing it in a tangible form-not having the original thought. While yes the two music videos are very similar, shots are still presented "uniquely" enough through framing and lighting to be transformative. I say "uniquely" because I'm speaking literally on how the art is presented and not with the context of things like the teams behind both music videos being the same or not. I personally feel like this is a case where both music videos likely had similar inspirations, but because Bahbah's music video(s) already existed she got the claim of the original thought.

    • @Jmv2.0
      @Jmv2.0 11 месяцев назад +14

      I just feel like is a bit of a reach. A lot of the visual themes in Selena and Sarah’s videos are not specific enough for someone to make a claim for originality. For instance, the robe scene where she is looking out of a balcony eating breakfast. That scene has been recreated SO MANY TIMES before , that’s why I don’t truly buy Sarah.
      I also do vaguely remember her previous allegations against Selena back in 2018 with the whole promotional video and tbh it was the same thing. Her ideas are not specific enough in each situation to lay claim that Selena specifically copied her. In 2018, Selena claimed that she was inspired by silent films and the Italian countryside (which you can clearly tell from the back to you music video), this time around, Selena claims that she was inspired by the luxurious life she enjoyed in France while working there… again it tracks with her music video which is about romance and love.

Haptic buttons tend to have reduced responsiveness, and I don't know who they made the touchscreen for but mine always thinks I'm trying to swipe instead of press because of how bumpy roads are where I live. All of the similarities she pointed out just feel like eventually two people will have the same idea even if they aren't copying each other. Like literally two people invented calculus at the same time, independently. It's probably worst case scenario just being too "directly" inspired by whatever gave her the idea, not outright copying for the sake of being lazy

      @@HearMeLearn It's blatantly obvious this isn't merely two people inspired to make similar music videos at the same location - one person saw the music video of another and decided "I like that, I'll do it myself". There isn't necessarily a problem with that, you can love the location of someone elses video and wish to do something similar and that's fine - what isn't fine is being 'inspired' by specific shots and scenes in someone elses video and recreating them for your own with minor if any changes to the thing that 'inspired' you. At some point it just becomes copying.

    Edit: As someone who has only ever primarily driven a car with physical controls, I find the the "futurization" of newer cars to be detrimental to the overall driving experience. As we have seen, when technology takes the place of something, there is almost always a consequence of some kind. In the auto world, tactile feedback has *always* been important, because driving a car isn't just a visual task, it's physical, auditory, etc. When our attention diverts, even for a second, we lose some of that focus and getting back into it can be difficult. Touchscreens and the like have their place, and can definitely be utilized where necessary, but analog buttons and switches are almost always going to be more reliable and more comfortable to use.

Like doing things in a similar fashion isn't stealing... or copying... like it would be different if it were shot for shot, same outfits same movement same clothes same editing. but it's not. Im SO tired of artist crying wolf on something that is similar ... there isn't anything original anymore so things are BOUND to be similar. But also making something your own isn't stealing or copying. It would be like Michelangelo and Leonardo saying they are stealing from one another just because they both have painted things in a similar style of realism/used the same color palette. Again, coming from an artist ,who doesn't like Selena, doing something similar doesn't equal copying/stealing.

    I understand that indie artists deserve to have their work be recognised and well received, but honest to god, the tiktok about Sarah comparing Selena's MV to a bunch of other works had the same exact energy as kpop stans doing the same thing with different kpop artists and the content they produce. As a kpop stan, I cannot stress _how_ often this has happened and for many, many, _many_ years too. It's not a new argument or drag. Just continual comparisons and screaming that this new group copied an older group's concept or album art, or MV or whatever. And most of the time, the comparisons are not only reaches but just pure coincidences. No one owns a concept, a location or anything of that sort. I don't understand why Sarah's making a big deal out of Selena's team choosing to work in the same exact location that she did some years or months prior. And why bring up the fact that she's Palestinian? What does her ethnicity have to do with anything? I don't condone Selena stans hating on her, bc that's completely unnecessary and it literally does nothing to solve the situation. Each and every single example Sarah gave was ridiculous and just so happened to be a little similar to something that was done before. I've seen this tired argument so many times in the kpop community that it is the exact same thing here. Nothing different. And if you're in the kpop community, you _know_ how kpop stans can get with one group copying another group. If you're not in the community, I'll tell you right now: it's bad. But it's also annoying and it's a tired and used up argument for almost every single group out there. Kpop stans who've been around and seen it all tend to ignore it, but that doesn't mean it's not there. I also don't think Sarah should apologise for this, it's unnecessary to, but it would be better if she didn't attempt to grasp at straws about something like this in the future, especially if the similarities are not one to one the same exact thing.

Even though it's starting to have mechanical issues, I'm reluctant to look at anything new partly because everything has touch screens now. The biggest problem is the lack of a tactile feel of the buttons. You can learn the location and feel of buttons over time, but with touch screens you're just blindly poking some part of a flat surface unless you look to know what you're doing. The comparison to touch screens and texting with phones is spot on; it's a safety issue.

    I live only like 5 miles away from the industrial explosion in Clinton Twp, MI it sounded like a war zone it was going on for over an hour. I have some friends that live even closer and had debris in their yard or their fences taken out by debris. Some of my friends that live closer even evacuated for the night with their pets.
    The biggest concern was what it was and what was billowing in the air, seemed like forever before they cities made Facebook posts about what was going on and the news didn't cover anything right away either, it just all happened so fast and there was so much confusion. There were so many people outside on their streets the Clinton twp police department needed to call on the surrounding departments to help push by standers back and keep crowd control.
    A fire truck had a huge dent and broken windshield from debris, and a firefighter got injured as well but is making a recovery.
    It ended up being a building stocked eith a bunch of CO2 canisters and thats what was blowing up and falling all around. So the shrapnel was all chunks of metal from those canisters.

    😊 Phil, I just wanted to say I am loving the new format. God bless you and hope you have the team fortitude to keep it up! If it becomes too much of a grind for the team shorter episodes are always welcome to me too❤

    I would LOVE for more vehicles to go back to using analog devices like switches and knobs. It feels more satisfying and like you are actually doing something to change something. On top of that, if one knob goes out, it doesn't mean the rest of them are broken like a screen does. I drive a 99 GMC jimmy, a 2013 Chevy 1500, 07 Pontiac grand prix, and a 2021 Toyota sienna, and while I love the sienna for all of its features, the others are so much nicer to drive at night or long distances simply because there is less going on, and you don't have a screen shining at you. My moms previous sienna, a 2020, was worse with 3 stalks, one just for cruise control, though a older screen. the cruise control in all of my other vehicles is confined into a small switch and a button on the end of the turn signal, except for the Silverado where its 4 buttons on the steering wheel. Cars today feel overly complicated just to be complicated. Touch screens just make it worse, as now we have screens the size of small TVs within cars, containing almost every function of the car. I like the screen in the 2021 sienna because its big enough to use, and works well for the reverse camera and all of its features, but the majority of the cars functions such as AC and cruise control are still analog, and it doesn't take up the entire dash. I don't understand why manufactures felt the need to include massive screens with every feature, beyond just trying to follow what tesla does, and seeing as teslas quality is terrible, I don't know why anyone would want to do that in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I like having a screen for apple car play, radio selection, etc, and the HUD in the sienna is pretty cool, but they aren't a necessity to the cars function, and if either broke, I could still drive it long distance with creature comforts such as AC. Plus I just miss the faint green hue of the jimmy's dash when I'm in other cars.

    I drive for Amazon and every one of our vehicles has a touch screen. They are older vehicles though so things like headlights, turn signals and windshield wipers are all physical buttons. the screen is mostly for back up cams and playing music.

    Touch Screen cars always felt like something that youd need a co-driver for. You cant feel what your pressing on a touch screen so you have to read it which means eyes off the road
