- In this video, we start collecting the material to begin our timber frame sawmill shed. The 5 initial posts are the starting point an d require a specific size log in order to make the post dimensions we want.

Love the Clark Griswald reference 😂
Forks would do you some good. My BX23s with forks work wonders with 12' logs and keeps them clean.
Use the hollow sections to make storage containers. Maybe for the cabins.
Great job Kelly you're a good woman, i pull my logs down but i got forks on my tractor i switch between bucket and forks works well for me been there done that enjoyed the video take care👍
If u backed up your side by side to the tree you could of reached higher up the tree, but just getting a bigger tree the height you are seems to be working fine too.
I've been waiting for this building to get built. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
Troy and Kelly good to see you guys getting ready to start the mill structure. It would be nice if you gave updates on the other videos like how the chicks are doing, Kelly show up your seedlings.
my favorit part of a build. harvesting and milling the lumber.. will be doing a nice project soon. now wait on my half cut off thumb to heal first. 6 trees all ready flaged. have fun with the build.
Looks like an interesting project
Gragging your logs though the dirt and gravel hurt your blade? I was thinking maybe forks. Just a thought. Love your videos I really learn a lot. Thanks
Troy,
You need a scale stick.
Laser levels are hard to see in brite sunlight so i have always used a reciever.
Assume your laser line is elevation 10, subtract everything below the line to get the concrete elevation and add the height above the laser line to get the clearance height. Subtract the concrete height from the clearance height to get the length of your post

I like the rough timber idea.
good time to do some thinning of smaller junky looking trees
encourage ground cover to grow possibly pig forage
suggestion get grapple for tractor that way not needed to lift as high plus make clearing brush and move trash plies
I thought about a grapple as well, but it would require significant investment (front hydraulics add or diverter valve plus grapple). I also wonder if that loader will lift those 12"+ x 12' logs with the heavier grapple on it.
@@mburke1211 1200 for grapple, 200 for hoses and fittings.
@@bradjenkins932 more than that because his Kioti doesn't have skid steer quick attach. He would have to rebuild part of the front endloader. Probably would be worth it.
@@PeaceIntheValley 350 for quick attach.
good video kelly you and the boys need to check his math before last cut, you forgot to cut trees for beams. take care, be safe and well.
You obviously have other uses for the logs besides the immediate long beams. How come you did not ribbon the trees that met your needs on your first hunt?
You need rest and a hot toddy Troy ... honey, whisky and lemon with a little boiled water
I have a magnetic scale/cheat sheet of what diameter log to the largest cant
Dragging
I'm surprised you didn't ribbon the trees with diameters. I would totally forget the "good" trees
what do you mean by "ribbon" the Trees?
@@PeaceIntheValley surveyor's ribbon colored pink or orange that you can write on with a sharpie. They often use it to mark boundary trees during surveys or tree harvesting.
i was thinking paint an x on the trees you want to harvest
@@zombiemaster123456 that is a start, but he needed to prioritize which ones would give him the most posts of the correct size without felling too many trees. Once you determine the candidate trees you need to prioritize them and just having paint means you will probably have to remeasure each of them.
I'm not an arborist, but I am an engineer.
Great video, Troy and Kelly! I love the content and the longer format. I'm sorry you guys have been sick. I hope you feel better soon. Flu or whatever it is can really knock you down. You two make a great couple of hookers! 😉😂 God bless you! 🥰
I wasn't there to remind you but you did cut them at 12 ft.
Others must have asked why you don't pull your logs down double length?
If you had a Grapple, it would save you a lot of hard work.
Yeah, if I had a new tractor I could do great things...

Please wear a hard hat when falling trees. Saw a guy killed by a widow maker
could always use whole tree just peel bark basically timber construction ( 🪵 log construction) only need to saw mill tops and bottom when doing rafter and headers
