I worked in Taiwan for a while as a musician and had a part time job setting up electric guitars for an import export business and all of us who worked there teaching or unboxing guitars had come to the conclusion that about 2 guitars out of a dozen were fine instruments...also you'll find Yamahas, Epiphones, Ibanez, Squier, etc all subcontract to some of the same factories. The Japanese built a state of the art factory for Yamaha in Kaoshiung Taiwan and they make instruments for several companies. I got my Korean made anniversary model strat from one of these orders.....hands down, Ibanez and Yamaha are the best companies for consistency. Squier has improved but not quite as consistent. I like my Korean made strat better than several American made strats that I've played..I worked in Taiwan as a musician and had a part time job setting up electric guitars for their import export business and all of us who worked there teaching or unboxing guitars had come to the conclusion that about 2 guitars out of a dozen were fine instruments...also you'll find Yamahas, Epiphones, Ibanez, Squier, etc all subcontract to some of the same factories. Agree. My 1989 Korean Samick Squier Strat is as good as any Fender Strat once you put some decent pickups in it - hey they had to save some money somewhere. Also, it has a plywood body and sounds really great! It's all about the geometry when a guitar is cut on the CNC machines. There's not much to getting a good Strat I would say - the neck pocket has to be right depth, and the neck heel also has to have the right depth. If these are in tolerance you will be able to set up the guitar beautifully. Where there is inconsistency on the production line you will get some bodies and necks that marry together perfectly, and others that do not.

Fantastic information - thanks for taking the time - and the consistency factor for those brands is no surprise. There are a lot of great instruments coming out of Korea.

I reviewed loads of Chinese-made products. Some are great. Some are not so great. China is a huge country and it has pretty much the same mix of the good and bad as anywhere else, just on a larger scale. Quality control varies as it does anywhere else including the USA. This is not a China-specific thing. As you say, often small runs, sometimes through necessity requiring the substitution of materials. The bottom line though is that we judge a guitar on its merits, not where it is made. Or I do at least.

He doesn’t say Chinese guitars are junk. He likes a lot of them. And he doesn’t say all American guitars don’t match posted specs, he specifically calls out Gibson.

I was watching videos of chinese guitar factories today, with a wide variation of organization. What be really nice is to have a "Picker" to pull our stuff from the rows of product, and do the most obvious checks of frets, neck etc. You see many "Chickenbackers" that all look the same in photos, yet many factories are making these..... In the end, its nothing new really. Your points, as usual, are well taken. Who knows maybe the "off" spec has a good sonic result LOL

Stay on the topic.... the buyers of instruments or other items from China report that they found but American products are the best ones in all ways... tools, instruments, etc. the products fro the USA are the best ones. Making excuses helps no one and he learned better....

I don't think it's that cut and dried - and I worked for an American manufacturer!

If you are buying it review then sell of course you don’t care about spec accuracy. But if your keeping it you care
