    I had an original XK120 in college back in 1968. It wasn’t such a rare car then.
    I loved the engineering on that Jag. Those leather wrapped rear springs had grease fittings on both sides of the rear axle. Made for a quiet ride. There were grease fittings on the inside of the brake backing plates to grease the wheel bearings. There were over two dozen grease fittings on the front suspension EXCEPT for the upper ball joints. Those had oil cups. The front brakes had 12-inch drums.
    Mine had a THREE speed gearbox. Behind the shift lever was a little flap in the carpet which covered the transmission dipstick, which was about as long as my index finger. When you turned the key on, you would hear two clicks up front from the electric chokes and a buzz in the back from the electric fuel pump. It was NOT necessary to touch the throttle to start the car, just like fuel injected cars today. If your throttle was goosey with those SU carbs opening too quickly, they were probably low on oil. The throttles were air operated with oil dampers and you had to check their oil often.
    All the fasteners on the bottom end of that gorgeous motor were safety wired, just like an airplane motor. The crank case held 12 and a half quarts of oil. And those square flaps behind each front seat? A six-volt battery in each one, wired in series for 12 volts.

    That paintjob is just phenomenal, such a beautiful shade of platinum/gold.
    Many people see cars purely as a 'go from A to B quickly' tool and I don't blame them. Sometimes when you're in a busy area and you spot a nice car, you can often see some other dude also glue their eyesight to this car and then you see each other and you just know both of you be like 'hell yeah he knows what's up' in their heads and then you just part ways and I think that's pretty cool. 😁

    Its not about noise in case of leafs. Its about reducing wear and surface tension. Leafs that are oily, work faster and smoother, react quicker. Due less surface resistance. Its not case of sound but handling and reliability.

    Modern and ancient all at once. I think style-wise this is up there with the E-Type. The leather-wrapped leaf springs could not be any more British.

    I helped a customer with his restoration of an XKE convertible.. It was a thing of beauty. Shortly before he left he started one of these. I think you might see it enjoying the lesser travelled roads near Montreal now. Nice car.

    Ted-my absolute favorite❤. It’s like driving a piece of Art Deco fashion. It amazingly still looks fast to me: sleek, sinister and sassy. I have a Mark 7 the sedan version, but the restoration is stalled while other stuff gets a little love. I agree with you about the upgrades. The antiques can be difficult to drive in modern traffic with 1940s technology and driving speeds. Thanks for this one and Happy Holidays.❤

      @@ac2litre thanks Ian. It’s been a slow restoration though. Right now, it’s getting a disc brake conversion. Seats, wood, exhaust, wiring all redone.👍

      @@marial8235 A thumbs-up to your "old man" for persevering with the project. The car I'm restoring (1949 AC 2 Litre) also has that distinctive split-screen and a sumptuous interior, similar to Jaguars of the day.

    Thanks for posting the driving experience of this Jag. I completely agree that these classics should be driven and not just kept as a collector's item somewhere in the back, only being polished for value and status. Fortunately, most owners here in Europe still think the same and, from spring to autumn, regularly show their beauty to the outside world. I also completely agree that it's okay to modify the car for safety before use, even though many purists might think otherwise.

    I had a chance to drive a 52 or 53 XK120 in 1971 but the transmission wasn't in very good shape so I eventually bought a 1967 Pontiac GTO

    Late 40s Studebakers had metal covers on their leaf springs that had to be pumped full of graphite grease every once in a while by the dealer who had a special tool for it.

    Actually, you shouldn’t change into first until you are stationary. It’s only intended for getting away from a standstill and they only introduced synchromesh to it in order to make it engage easily without having to double declutch. I think the handbrake is the fly-off type too. Great drive by the way.

    In the South it's emergency brake as well. I'm fully confident that's the case literally everywhere and people bizarrely saying it's electronic are wrong and have never interacted with a car older than 2010.

      It seems a bit strange to me for it to be called an "emergency brake"
      That implies it's for emergencies, but it's used literally every time you park. Sometimes even while waiting at traffic lights. In an actual emergency (aka your brakes failing) I suppose you could use the handbrake but it's a very rare case and in almost every actual emergency situation the footbrake will stop the car much faster

      I'm no expert in the matter. I think that cars built like this just couldn't survive in a consumer market, even back in the day, and even as special as they were when new, compared to anything else. Even a commuting "tool" like a Beetle, eventually had to go away, especially when certain manufacturers started producing cars capable of 100,000 miles, without much work... and then it became 200,000mi. I'm right there with you though; what happened to the beautiful styling, the difference in styling, the notable styling and feel from certain manufacturers? Now everything looks the same, looks like it's from a "Transformers" movie, and once you park it in a big parking lot, good luck finding it again, because it looks like everything else sitting around it.

      Nothing wrong with a good Moss ’box. The whine in 1st gear is absolutely beautiful, part of the character of the car in my opinion.

      @@nicholasscarff2621 We'll have to agree to disagree! My experience of them goes back to when they were still current, on Mk1s and Mk2s, and I felt that the whine made them seem terribly fragile even if they weren't. My main complaint was about the ridiculous amount of travel between, particularly, 1st and 2nd gears. I believe a lot of these boxes were built by Jaguar to Moss designs and I wonder if Jaguar had the machining ability to do a good job. Probably wrong!

    The xk120 coupe is by far more beautiful to look at than the xk140 coupe, which is way better looking than the xk150 coupe . To drive , if your are 6ft , like me , the 120 is a pig , with your shins and knees literally scraping on the dash board , which is a pity . The xk140 , however addressed this issue with a lot more leg room , the 150 , driving wise was somewhat better , now your chest was not at risk of being crushed over a bad bump as they then fixed the upper dynamics of the driver's cockpit , I believe , if you were the pretty much standard British height of 5ft6 of the day , the 120 was a true delight to drive . As you enjoy it , size wise you must be close to circa 1950s British male stature . Its one car I have always loved the looks of but hated the driving position that I avoided ever driving one further than absolutely necessary . If it had the interior dimensions of the 140 , I would be as happy as a pig in the perverbial to drive one everyday .

    the way the brits say it is incorrect anyway. stems from a latin american native word so the "U" in jaguar is pronounced "oo" not "yoo."

      That original 4 spoke wheel is one of the features that Jaguar fanatics either love or hate. To me it’s just flat out ugly, and it takes up too much room in an already tight passenger compartment. I’ve seen a number of these with aftermarket steering wheels, usually 3 spoke with wood rims, that are far more attractive and not as large. I drove one of these once, and being Swedish, I’m “husky” and the 4 spoke steering wheel was so large that when I turned the wheel my knuckles touched the door! Still, it’s a fun car to drive, although nowhere near as thrilling as an E-Type.
