I never listened to this band before - the name made me think it was some kind of hard-core grungy type set-up. But this song has made me grateful to be alive. Beautiful, just beautiful. Will be checking out all their stuff now, especially as they remind me of Cream.

Hershey 1985 is right up there among the best as well. Rain finally coming to an end. The moon peeking through the clouds above the stage. It was magical. =)

When you showed up on my RUclips feed, I thought the idea of watching a younger black man listening and reacting to the Grateful Dead was absurd. Especially in 2021. I'm so glad I didn't ignore the suggestion because I have met a man who embodies all of the values, beliefs and attitudes of my particular subculture. He lives it and shares it daily. You, brother are a true keeper of the flame. In this world of endless differences, there are things that make us more or less the same. Music is one... It's a great place to start. Thank you...

Yeah, when this band brings you to that moment when you wonder if you're even listening to music anymore.
Best line from Jamel in this reaction..."You don't even have to know what the it is, but you gonna feel it." That pretty much encapsulates the past 37 years of my life being a Deadhead. I've never been quite able to put into words what it is that I'm feeling, but the Grateful Dead damn sure make me feel it.
I only saw the Dead once but it was around '72 and Pigpen was still there. He added an R&B element to the band that could never be replaced.

It is a cover song -- about nuclear war. Written in the early 1960's by a young woman from Canada. Check out the original, too. But I am mesmerized watching you listen to this for the first time. You are so feeling this. And rightly so. Welcome to the family, friend xo
The original version of this song was written by a Canadian folk singer by the name of Bonnie Dobson. She used to preface her performance of it with something like: "I'd like to play my new song entitled Morning Dew. May it never happen to us."
Long familiar with magical Dead performances of this, but not previously aware of the original and other covers. Found Dobson's original is an excellent listen - not quite the same words. Some of the other covers provide interesting alternative interpretations. Check out is when she is accompanied by Robert Plant.
Duane and Gregg Allman do a pretty cool version of this with Butch Trucks recorded in 1968 🍄

At the '72 London Lyceum, Garcia spent much of this song w/his back to the audience bc he was so into the moment that tears were streaming down his face. That happens to me @ every single live show I go to, I can't control it--the moment I look around & see everyone around me flowing along & the music strikes a chord that hits me in the feels, waterworks just pour down my smiling face.
I got this song at my 1st Dead show. and I needed it. my soul was saved that nite. thats how I felt, and still do.
I cried like a baby. so believe me, I know the Magic. Jerry was glowing on that stage. he looked like an angel to me. such a powerful, beautiful human. Thank you Jerry, and the boys.

I recall listening to music never stopped at a show in the late 80s and it was really hot that summer, and it was the end of the first set and it was a Tuesday and when Bob was about to say the line “and the cool breeze didn’t come on Tuesday” it was great. Another show in Raleigh there was a huge bolt of lightning that came down the same second the first notes to Dark Star began to play. I can tell a dozen of these anecdotes but don’t wanna go on any longer. O one of my favorites was being stared at by Edie Brickell when her band opened for jerry and da boys. For a WHOLE song. I was in the 4 row on the floor though, in the middle. But I wish I woulda approached her somehow for at least an autograph. She was so gorgeous and talented and Bobby Weir was glued to her on the side stage, he wanted to get some of that!
What's so amazing to me about this tune is that it's so wide open, but yet every space is filled with just the right amount of instrumentation. Masterful.
I know I’m late to this party but that’s my favorite thing about the dead. The beauty of their musicianship is that they truly listen to each other on stage. None of them are trying to play the loudest solo or steal the spotlight. They each have so much to offer and they all provide the space for each other to bring it to the table, creating such mind-blowing collectives of incredibly rich musical tapestries built on a foundation of deceptively simple structure. Some of their greatest performances come from songs entirely based around two or three chords, and it gives them all a LOT of room to really work with it and find their groove. “Fire on the Mountain” from this same show is a prime example. Just two chords, but the song is stretched to 15 minutes with an explosive ending. Absolute masters of their craft, each and every one of them.

Jerry could crawl inside a melody like no one's business and make you feel it in your spine. He made the notes sing in ways only he could have dreamt up or conjured or whatever magic he was channeling at times. I play a bit and Ive studied Jerry since I was like 14. Ive heard 100 other people try and describe his special sauce - the loping lazy path back to the roots, the unexpected detours between scales, the spaces in between notes (the non-note). All the above and 1000 other reasons. I still dont think anyone really can understand why he lit so many of us up and continues to 26 years after he left us. And maybe thats exactly why its his special sauce

Closest I made it to Jerry was 95 lot in ATL and some beautiful Rose dose- a single hit 2nd hand off my buddy's tongue had me tripping harder by a million than 2 tabs of local Athens Demon Point THE NIGHT BEFORE. But I didnt want to try to go in cuz I didnt wan a jinx it by thinking I wouldnt get another chance...

J is the best reactor out there, and this is one of his best. He emerses himself and is able to get the gist of the song on his first listen. For many of us oldies, watching J brings us back to those times when we first “got into” a song or band. Auditorium Theatre. Listened to that yesterday. My hometown at the time. Got to see 3 May ‘77 shows: Barton Hall and both Auditorium shows. I was about to recommend this Stella Blue to someone.

5/8/77 is a great show indeed. But if you really deep dive into the band's live concerts, there are lots of shows just as good. And many shows even better.
Most available and very clean in the trading community. As far as best, there are lots. Me personally, I dig 11/17/73.
One of the interesting aspects of going to Dead concert was that no matter how many you went, they were all completely different. Even on the same tour, every night different songs and even the songs that were the same were different versions!
I feel this is the greatest Morning Dew ever played and watching you discover it like this is like watching my emotions embodied out in the world. So glad you enjoyed, brother Jamel!

As a Deadhead for the past 45 years I have to admit I'm reliving the first time I heard all of these songs through watching you fall in love with Jerry and the boys. I was lucky enough to catch 24 live shows and one Jerry Garcia Band show with special guest BB King in Burlington, VT back in '83. We have always called Jerry our father. All I can say is welcome to the family my brother.
This song can be used to tell how Jerry was feeling it seems every time they played it. His voice and his playing is always using a different emotion. EVERY TIME.

Great choice Jamal. This was the period with Keith Godchaux on the keys. He was in the band from 1971-79. The 70s were prime Dead for me. Brent joined in 1979. You also need to dive into the period with Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. He was in the band from 1965-72. He sadly passed away in 1973 at age 27.

Great suggestion. The Hard to Handle from the Yale Bowl (07/31/71), available on Complete Road Trips, is one of the great Dead performances. Pigeon rips it up on vocals and Garcia's solo towards the end is one of my favourite solos of all time. Awesome stuff.
They opened with “Jack Straw” and played a very rich and colorful “Morning Dew” my first show, Astroworld, Summer of ‘84. I’ll never forget it.
This is one of those songs you can listen to a hundred times and always pick up on something new that you missed before!
The RESPECT you have for GOOD music makes me SMILE, SMILE, SMiLE!!!
Always enjoyed likening this song to the day after the show, literally walking around in morning dew after camping, coming down (or not) the next morning. Remembering everything that was experienced the night before, expanded things seen and heard, the show, and coming back into orbit. After all the craziness, and trying to make sense of it all...it doesn’t matter anyway. ❤️

Jamel, I don’t know how I missed this reaction but I’m so glad I did! My very first show in 1983, they played this song and my spirit left my body and floated above me. Every hair on my body stood up! This song will always take me to that place. The power of music to transport you body and soul to other places is so amazing, ✌️☮️
