I have never in my life had heat damage on my natural hair and my mom used to use the scorching hot pressing comb off the stove every 2 weeks on our heads, my sis and I, growing up. Our hair was very long, thick and bouncy. And that heat was way hotter than the Chi and other popular irons of today.
