When campaigning for president, he stayed at Super 8 motels instead of fancy places. He even refused Secret Service protection because he didn't think his security was the responsibility of the taxpayers. While he was in Congress, lobbyists didn't bother to approach him because they knew that he would not be swayed from his beliefs no matter what they offered. Whether or not one agrees with his politics, it's indisputable that he was a man of principle.
