This is extremely simple. Protesting, in and of itself, should never be illegal. However, if in the course of your protest you break any other laws then you should absolutely face the legal consequences of that. End of discussion, let's move on.

Yeaaaah, but if you arrest someone in a protest due to breaking the law a riot happens... The cops get blamed... People get angry. Or a riot happens anyway... A lot of people who go to protests want to break something and do whatever they want, so any chance for a riot they'll take it.

It's not about taking away the right to protest, it's about preventing unequal protest.
An organised march of 5000 people through central London causing some disruption is perfectly acceptable, the problem is when a dozen extremists can bring an entire city to a standstill by blocking a major motorway costing not only millions of pounds but also peoples lives.

    • @Imreallyboredsick
      @Imreallyboredsick 5 месяцев назад

People do and should have the right to protest but not infringe on others' lives and cause that kind of disruption that Just Stop Oil has. A woman missed her own mother's funeral, and cancer patients have missed important hospital appointments due to their protests. No matter the cause, that is not, nor should it ever be acceptable. That's why those protestors have been jailed. In addition to disruption, that one occupation of the motorway last year alone cost the police about £1.5 million. This should not be acceptable in any kind of society.

People do and should have the right to protest. But it is truly unacceptable what Just Stop Oil have done. The problem with a lot of protesters is imo they do it more for themselves so they can feel good about themselves than for the actual goal and in the process they lose sight of whether what they do is actually practically helping.
You want to help the planet? Start with things like I have started doing for the past 15 years: I drive a small economical car, I eat very little if any meat, I only throw things away that really are worn out and can't be repaired etc.
In The Netherlands where I live they made a calculation estimating that if all the Dutch would dispense with eating meat for 1 day per week you reduce so much CO2 it's the equivalent of the output generated by 1 million cars. That's the sort oif thing that's going to make a difference, NOT walking around in a bird suit and making obscure theater that leaves other people scratching their heads whether you have lost your sanity or not.

A bunch of eejits who turn attention away from the groups actually working to make the difference who are far larger & in doing so turning people against it. The Suffragettes weren't the group who should be remembered but the suffragists. The Suffragettes bloody burned down the house of an MP who was for the women's right to vote. Eejits. The thing that actually made a difference was WWI & women showing they could do it like men & thus won the right to vote.

    "Reasons for suffrage opposition
The opposition to the right for women to vote was a multifaceted phenomenon in which women themselves played a major part.[24] One reason for women's opposition was their belief that women were equal to men (although women were expected to be "equal" in different spheres from men); and that women already had significant moral authority in society, which they would lose if they entered the corrupt world of partisan politics.[25] Anti-suffragists were also appalled by the violent tactics of suffragettes, who had attacked Members of Parliament with whips and a hatchet.[26]
Many female maternal reformers, who sought to protect women's defined spheres of motherhood, education, philanthropy, and civil service, felt that women were the better sex for preserving British society through social service to their communities rather than by meddling with politics.[27] Many women had little desire to participate in politics, and believed that to do so was women just imitating men, instead of using the moral authority that came from being "real women."[25] Some feared that the right to vote would lead to uninformed women in making decisions on important political matters. Since Britain was in the process of colonizing other regions around the globe, some viewed the right to vote as a threat to their imperial power as it would make the British look weak to other nations who were male oriented still.[28] Some suffragist female groups developed militant and violent tactics which tarnished the image of women as peaceful people that the anti-suffragists had been striving to preserve. Anti-suffragists used these acts as reasons to show that women were unable to handle political matters and that both genders had different strengths.[29]
Women writers promoted anti-suffragism through their wide readerships by raising questions of what ideal women were to be like."
    from Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-suffragism
Suffragettes were mostly women from higher classes and had therefore a safer place and more protection in society, while women from lower classes feared that they would lose the protected places they had in society.
Inform yourself before you compress a multilayered historical phenomenon without a proper explanation and context to make a cheap punchline.

There was a woman who missed her mother's funeral and an grandfather who missed his granddaughter's birth. Cancer patients have had to rearrange hospital appointments. It's just so selfish. In a free society, people should have the right to protest, but not to the point on infringing on other's lives which is what Just Stop Oil have done. Not to mention they keep targeting historical objects and paintings which is always despicable.

We have constitutional guarantees - but we have selective policing on that. IF you block my path and restrict my movement - jail. If I restrict what you say - Jail. If you use violence and intimidation - jail.

Pretty much all protests cause inconvenience but protesters need to learn to stop before the public mindset goes from "Yes I was inconvenienced a bit but I understand where they're coming from, I get why they are upset and I kind of agree with them." To "I was so inconvenienced by them that now even any slight mention of their cause will remind me of that and gets me so angry that I don't want to hear a single thing about it and will ignore it whenever it is mentioned even if it is actually a good cause."
These idiots are actually doing their causes great harm by making large chunks of the public angry at the entire cause and making them ignore it due to their antics.

Why don't these protesters glue themselves to the runway serving the COP summits? A small private jet travelling to COP emits two years worth of CO2 that you would emit in a day. It is not childish to ridicule these acts of vandalism. I'm young, and my generation is inheriting these issues, and I've actually got to live in this world when those generations who've caused these issues are no longer living in it. I'm sorry, but invading public events like the Snooker World Championships, throwing orange paint everywhere, whether it be at a politician on his wedding day or on ancient monuments such as Stonehenge do absolutely nothing except needlessly cause a massive clean up bill and mass disruption to society for no legitimate reason. If you do not see the problem of righteously punishing ordinary people 'for their own good' I'm legitimately speechless.
