This is the video that sold me on the EF-X3 immediately! Mine just got here yesterday and I don't think I've ever been this transfixed with a piece of gear. I'm absolutely mind-blown that I own one.
@@HANGINGOUTWITHAUDIOPHILES the spinning bit towards the end reminded me a bit of Willy Wonka! How do you find the Echofix compares to your original RE-201?
@@fraymes it’s a great unit. Really fantastic. The 201 I have is quite thin and brutal. This is very much more full and feature full also. It’s a wild thing to have a new tape echo in 2023. Just love it!
@@HANGINGOUTWITHAUDIOPHILES try getting it serviced. My RE-101 was incredibly thin until I had a tech go through and re-align the machine, heads were all out of whack. I have some good reccomendations in LA!
Thanks so much! Putting ones real head in the eye of the storm is a real rush. I need to explore more with the arrays and the head. Tbh the localization you imagine will happen is quite crude. When a speaker is behind the head then the level it generates is not “equal” vs one pointing directly at an ear. I would like to see how to make the circular pans really feel legit
I just got one of these and don’t do modular but want to take advantage of CV remote speed like in this video. Any advice from the internet? Also in there a community of folks with these devices chatting and troubleshooting? I haven’t found anything
@@HANGINGOUTWITHAUDIOPHILES Have wanted to try this sort of thing for SFX design for a while, love how the delays sound bouncing through the space of the room too. Inspiring video!
@@HANGINGOUTWITHAUDIOPHILES I know! I remember you making a comment of that sort many moons ago. And I‘m pretty sure it‘s not gotten easier. Did you find someone to do the editing for you or are you doing it yourself? Anyway, your explorations are some of the most creative I‘ve seen. I sometimes imagine some of your Nitty Gritties put to video - what a blast that would be! Whatever you end up doing, I appreciate it! Lots of love from Berlin ❤
Thanks. Well this is available to the patreons as huge 30 minute unedited recordings. There’s a lot I couldn’t get to production. A whole section with an oberheim SEM for example that never made the cut
A loveley delay unit; beautiful guitar playing and a reaaly cool idea to use Fritz. I imagine that in a good sounding space with decent surround sound systen (like a theatre).....
I thought it would have been more affordable. I wonder why they're so expensive... What did they put in this thing?? I'm not saying it's not an awesome piece of gear, but that's a lot for a tape delay.
Yeah, tape delay, real or digital, is what I use for pretty much all delay. It's the shizzle'z fosnizzle or something. Really cool that someone is finally making new tape delays.
There’s really is nothing like it. Plug-ins have a certain charm but I find that tape juiciness is hard to imitate and playing machines like this leads to so many happy accidents
Perhaps this is irrational, but modern tape delays always seem to have some weird proprietary tape cartridge thing, which is a bit worrying - I don't especially want to spent silly money on a delay unit only for the company to fold and then be unable to get another one of these silly cartridges when the tape inevitably wears out. I'm a lot more inclined to get this one purely on the basis that it just has a plain ol' tape loop.
@@HANGINGOUTWITHAUDIOPHILES exactly. And yeah, the worst offender is Fulltone given how bloody expensive the unit is. Less concerned by something like the T-Rex Replicator given it’s a lot cheaper.
@@MV-es3sk the heads are definitely more full range on the new machine so I’d say if you boosted the mids an lot on the source before hitting the machine and cut the lows it might help to force a little grime ! Also a little distortion either before or after. The echofix is a more clean and Hifi echo for sure. Sometimes way more useful Thanks the space echo
Every comparison with the Roland I've heard, this new tape echo sounds worse. If I were spending $2-$3000 on a tape echo, I'd go for the restored Roland every time.
The mixing of this video is utterly phenominal

Fantastic video! I love the previous echo fix, this one seems like a nice update.
Isn’t it a wild thing to have a new tape delay? I was inspired to see you with yours. I knew I could trust it was solid after you endorsed it !!
I vote for more HOWA video content this year
What a fine fun trip this video was!
Thanks! High praise from you sir. Definitely not a definitive look but hopefully gets across the joy of this thing
Dude! What a brilliant video.
Too kind sir! Don’t know how you guys all make so many wonderful videos all the time. This stuff is exhausting ! lol
Those sounds you extracted from the machine are MADNESS!
Just, magnificent madness...
Absolutely loved this.
I have a RE-301 at the center point of my setup. Everyone should own a real analog tape delay.
ochd and flange duties! Nice.
Love the video
Cheers! Yes. Ochd to tape speed. Gotta love it :) one ochd is never enough!!
TIL Nitty gritty segment is even cooler with visual reference.
Ah good!
I fully agree with funknode!
@@MikeMuncher hmm. Well I’ll certainly try ! These videos take me so long! lol.
Thanks for sharing. Loving the sounds at 04:35
Love the sounds and thoroughly enjoyed the production 👍
Thanks !
Love the video nitty format
Amazing video guys, keep up the good work!
Awesome fun, wonderful sounds 😊
What modifications have you made to your RD-8?
My gas just went up. Great video
woah a video nitty, alright lfg!!!
The demo we needed, but didn't deserve. 🙌
A filmographer and a sound auteur. Brilliant work Jamie!
Too kind :) glad you liked it !

In the podcast I somehow missed that this was a real tape machine. Not a digital module.
Awesome!
Beautiful video bud! Wish I could be in the room for that quad speaker setup 💋🤌

Shane is amazing.
Absolutely! Hats off
Great sounds! I love the mixing of the individual delay taps in the physical world with that Neumann head.
It sounds so good - I'm a bit jealous!
I’d love to hear what you’d do with one!
Headphones are essential for this!
Lordy it's trippy.
Yes! The head recordings only translate in the phones :)
NITTYYYYYYY!
What a video!
Brb adding a few more delay taps to my puredata patch... for reasons...

Quad tape delay is insane. Rn I'm running the individual outs into a land mixer and getting a stereo pingpong out! its amazing!

Nice Sequentix sticker.
I put that there for you !
201 looks like is distorting much more in the meter department.
It breaks up way sooner and has WAY less bass. The distortion is cooler on the 201 imo. It is just so familiar I suppose. Old heads!
