Great story John!!! Back in 1970 prior to my deployment to Cambodia I was stationed at Camp Drum New York. (Fort Drum now) My unit had armor training with a Marine unit. The weather was cold and the conditions were spartan. The Marines CO sought me out because I had shown his men how to build a fire using coal. I gave another “class” to a second group of Marines who were pretty rude to me being an 18 year old Army guy. However when were late for the morning formation I ran to their tent and opened it up and dragged the coal stove outside. Someone knocked the chimney down and a few minutes later they would have been casualties from Carbon Monoxide poisoning. They treated me much better after that! Their commander joked he wasn’t sure there was a medal for saving wiseguys!! I went on to serve in Operation Giant Slingshot in Cambodia…The Old Army Scout…

Love the sticker story. Patience and never forget. LOL
I bought a ship auger bit and used it in my Dad's old and quite powerful 1/2" drill motor. The bit was well over an inch. I bought it to make some Halloween rocket-type stoves/devils in a few pieces of my firewood for a neighborhood party. I needed to drill down about 2/3 way in the end grain of the log to be able to cross-drill the eyes, nose and mouth. Let me tell you; when the auger engaged the top of the fire log, that drill wound me up! I even secured it on my upright drill press, and it bogged the motor to a halt. I immediately abandoned that and bought a big spade bit. I could handle that and finally got the job done. My wrist was sore for several days. It's now funny thinking about how powerful and aggressive those things are. Do stupid things and learn! LOL However, my devil flaming fire logs were a hit with the party crowd. Thanks.

Particularly fun episode for me, you did the auger bit up just like I hoped you would and the story was hilarious in itself but also brought back great memories. In High School one lunchtime me and a friend snuck out to the parking lot and covered another friend's Junker Chevette with stickers, we had rolls of stickers like they use in party stores on beer and such. Two of us spent the whole lunch hour covering that little car in stickers, windows and all. I think the whole school was rolling in laughter as he was leaving the lot that day..........And to his credit he took it as the good-natured prank it was and never got mad about it.

I have had good luck curing enamel paint with large incandescent bulbs in reflector lamps. You have to find the right distance to get the right temperature. I like about 120 degrees or so. You get a hard finish in less time than room temp cure.

John, fun story. The auger bit resto is great. FYI you’re halfway correct about the weld spatter on the bit. I know what happened, have seen this first hand. Someone, probably an electrician was drilling a hole and hit a live wire 💥 that arched on the bit.💥 I’ve seen the same on pliers that cut live wires.

One time in marine corps bootcamp, some DI's thought it would be funny to give 3 of us recruits foot locker combination locks without the combinations because they knew that those 3 recruits would get slayed come next time we had to open our footlockers because without the combination they wouldn't be able to open them. Knowing the DI's were playing this dirty trick, I went through during the squad bay field day and started taking all the locks and mixing them up. Now everyone in the platoon had different locks than their combination so all the locks had to be cut off because nobody's combinations worked. And with the tight schedule those Drill instructors have to follow, nobody got slayed for it

We used to be able to hear the "booms" from Camp Smith and I'm close but not that close.
The "weld" on that Naileater bit was probably someone hitting a live wire. Great bits and they do eat nails, pulls them right out and get wrapped around the worm. Worst thing is when the worm gets dull or worn they don't work very well. The worm pulls the bit through the wood. I don't miss wiring house anymore...lol

1967, Defense Language Institute Monterey California, there was a bus load of us Jarheads going for language school. It stopped outside of the post. A major for on and admonished us to be on best behavior.
" We are guests and students here. God help you if you cause trouble"! He told us. Even so we had some sh*t birds. They didn't have a happy ending.
On the flip side we had a force recon guy. Very quiet guy. One Friday night an Air Force guy started ragging on him. The Airman was drunk of course. I got ahold of his buddies and told them get control of this clown or he is going to be hurt very badly. I explained what a force recon guy was and he already had a tour in the Nam. He was not gonna fight according to the Marquis of Queensbury rules.
The next morning the drunken Airman apologized profusely. This recon was dangerously a bad ass. But he was quiet and almost humble, you could feel he was not to be messed with. Everyone treated him with respect and did likewise back. It's the quiet guys that are dangerous not the loudmouth blow hards.

John, Great story and I have a few doozys that I will never tell. My Grandfather was a carpenter at Fox studios before and after WWII and I have all of his tools and his 1950s Craftsman table saw. All of his bits are rusted. Can you give me the videos of all of these bits you have re-stored? How do you sharpen this style??

Maybe the auger bit drilled through a wall and shorted out on some live copper wires?

    ScoutCrafter,
Great Story. Was it spatter or a crack repair?

Bob- Believe it or not I think it hit a live wire!!!

@ScoutCrafter That is possible. If it hit a live wire I would expect a deposit of copper. I know when a welding lead shorts to a steel deck you find a deposit of copper in the steel. We had over 200 deposits in the deck of one of our ships during new construction.

I think someone drilled into a wire.
