- Now that budokai tenkaichi 4 is real and coming to us soon! I thought it was a good idea to check out the original budokai game to see the series in its original form! And I gotta say the original budokai tenkaichi is brutal

It is simply false advertising, however malicious or intentional it may or may not be, and might give a few people the wrong expectations for a hot minute going in. That’s all.

FUN FACT: the reason Cell reuses the first form voice is cause there was no room for more audio files. In Japanese Cell has the same voice for all forms so when the game was translated into English they had no room to add voice lines for each form.
I’m probably the only one with a head canon that Cell screeches in his 1st form voice

Each game tends to run into its own version of this problem. In Burst Limit Cell primarily speaks in his perfect voice. In The Breakers which got released recently he primarily speaks in his Semi Perfect voice, though not as often as other cases
and that continued in subsequent games. i think by that point they were just cutting corners until burst limit. that always bugged me whenever i used cell in budokai 1-3.
given in 2 and 3, he uses his perfect form voice when you use his super spirit bomb.
its not so much a hardware issue, its just that the game was originally developed in japan (where cell has the same voice across all transformations) so they gave perfect cell the ability to use 1st form cell's voice lines, because to them it wouldn't have mattered because the voices are the same
I love how half the game just plays itself in every cutscene
That's for the first time, you mostly play Goku's battle, when you complete the mode you can replay some other battles.
Just so you know Doto, after you complete the story the first time, go back and play it again for alternate battles and what ifs (like if cell absorbed someone else lol)

How I completed this game as a kid is beyond me, I didn't know how to block, throw supers or any combos, I just threw hands till they died 💀
I was not expecting this game to be so damn brutal. Nowadays we’re lucky if we see a drop of blood let alone what Cell did to Trunks.
I wanna see him do the "alternate stories" cause they dont ever really do stuff like that ever.
Alternate Stories and The Legend of Hercule for the finale
I don't even remember how I got them, but I remember the one where cell has a nightmare and ends up absorbing krillen, making him tiny, then fight tien and Yamaha, I think.

Honestly, one thing the OG Budokai had above all the other DBZ Games. It was that the cutscenes went hard as fuck. I wish they gave the same energy for all the future installations.
Wait, it's not over yet... There's still the extra Battles in Story Mode, including the 3 "What-If" Battles! You *have* to play those before moving on from _Budokai 1_
I remember playing this on the gamecube, and I could NOT for the life of me get past that vegeta training part Lol. But now that I look back on this game, it did its job so incredibly well. The cutscenes are amazing, and though the gameplay isn't perfect, it felt like binging another arc of dragon ball all over again.

I remember this game. Can't believe it has been 20 years. This felt amazing to play at the time.
What I remember the most is how hard it was to use the super moves. Some of those button combo's were brutal. Then by Budokai 3, they changed it to make it super easy.
Budokai 1 isn't over! There's bonus levels after you finish the main story, including the first What If's within the Budokai series!
You gotta do those cause they're very fun and one of them spawned one of my personal favorite and hilarious What if's too.
Jesus Christ that Cell fight at the end gave me PTSD when I was a little kid, but nevertheless the Budokai Tenkaichi 4 trailer has re-ignited my excitement for DBZ games on console.
Side note: when you replay the story mode after beating it for the first time you'll be able to play the parts where the game skips at first, so you'll be able to play Piccolo in the Saiyan saga, Vegeta in the Namek and Android Saga, and the what if scenarios.
Plus for the fact that they got all the voice actors from the show for the game. That made it even better

Difficulty always seemed to scale in Legend of Hercule Mode, so it didn't really matter. The higher you went, the harder they seemed to be.
Dotto there's a cool alternate timeline version of the story mode you can play after the main story to unlock more stuff. I'd love to see you play that as well.

I was born 2006 but my father was very well off so I had the ps2 and every game that came out. Several years later my mom goes through storage and I have a BUTTLOAD of games the budokai series being one of my favorites.

You can replay it again now with more story missions and expanded story with Piccolo, Vegeta, etc. And a few "extra" stuff in there too
Also do Hurcule's extra story mode too, it's great
Also, stuff like the health drain and playing as mecha frezia IS a thing, but they're skills to give your custom fighters in the PvP modes

Hey @dotodoya you probably know this but this is budokai 1 from the budokai series of 1,2,3 and infinite world. If you want OG budokai Tenkaichi then check out budokai Tenkaichi 1 but you may be a little disappointed. They didn’t perfect the series until 3 but I love all of them being a DBZ fan and my childhood lol.
Doto you gotta play the extra missions when you go back through the story . There are super cool amd unique. Loved seeing you give this old game some love. One of my favorites

Doto it's like Infinite World you have to play the story twice. Also use >K,P,P,P,E to make your beams connect

Now, you make me wanna challenge you and go back through all of that. Thanks for playing through this game. Loved every dang second of it. Now, I say you should play Budokai 2. It isnt as great as Budokai 1, but you get characters up to the Buu Saga. Its just the story mode is a board traveler, so ya have to think on things, and figure out hoe to stay in place to find some dragon balls.

This game may seem outdated and goofy now but man, playing this as a kid back when it released was such a fun time and it was actually this game that got me to start watching the anime more, before this game, I only casually watched the anime on Toonami

12:33 The reason why Cell uses his 1st form voice both In taunts, normal attacks and when he's hurt In the old Tenkaichi games Is because Cell's japanese VA doesn't change his voice between forms.
So there's only 1 sound for these mentioned In the english version.
