Ghoti - Failed Cards, Archetypes, and Sometimes Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh

  • Setting: The beach at night. Light Pollution: Minimal. A faint breeze whispers of things unseen over the fuzzy buzz of breaking surf. The ocean is dark, but the sky is full of stars, and one must wonder what strange fish navigate the cosmos. Enter: the Ghoti. This archetype of bizarre spacefaring sea creatures (Shif, Fairy of the Ghoti, Ixeep, Omen of the Ghoti) has traveled from The Most Distant, Deepest Depths for the sole purpose of synchro summoning during your opponent’s turn to gain advantage while interrupting plays (Arionpas, Serpent of the Ghoti). But maybe they could have saved themselves the trip, because despite their trickiness and explosive resolutions, the Ghoti never really managed to infiltrate the competitive TCG scene. Everyone strap on an O2 tank (Deep Diver, Doggy Diver), because be it underwater or outer space, where we’re going there is no air. Let’s dive in.

"Failure archetypes" really started from "archetypes that can't do what they're supposed to do" to "archetypes that mostly consist of bad cards with few playable cards" to "archetypes with some good cards but need help outside their archetype to run properly" to "archetypes that can function normally but not consistent enough" to "archetypes that perfectly functional on their own and can be combined with other tools to be better, but they are just not tier 1"

@@quijassajiuq900 It's almost like your idea of "failure" isn't the same as DuelLogs' original theme for the series. It's almost like people can sort things into tiers, themes, consistency and viability without resorting to just labelling them as failures. It's almost like you don't even perceive the problem people have with the growing broadness of this channel's use of the term, let alone understand it.

I honestly kinda hate how the game got to a point where any given deck or strategy is either a top 1 meta contender or considered a failure and garbage. The deck functions properly, is built around a cool idea and is unique and beloved by many, that would never be considered a failure in any other game or context ever except YGO, sad

Well in Duel Links, more decks have a lot of viability due to the slower pace of the game allowing for games to last beyond the first turn. Despite some rather overpowered skills (a common complaint), I find a ton of variety in deck building on PvP and find that most strategies that just don't cut it in the TCG or Master Duel are perfectly serviceable and even really good in Duel Links, and not just because of "meta chasing". They were careful not to add some of the most powerful searchers and negates and archetypes in the game that allow for cheese, and many of the comboes that do work are quickly banned or restricted, thanks to the mechanics of the ban list not just reducing the odds of a strategy working, but out right preventing it with another strategy (since you can only have 2 cards from the limited 2 ban list PERIOD, many archetypes end up being a choice of "either you can do this offensive strategy but have no defense, OR you can go with this defensive strategy but gotta tribute summon to get your main win condition on the field." thus balancing the game a lot more.
Also, in Duel links, trap cards are extremely useful. They aren't too slow as not many cards can wipe out back row and even if they can, a lot of cards generate advantage even if they are destroyed in DL, meaning you'll see a lot more "Bluffing" to bait out spell destruction. Also spell/trap negates are EXTREMELY rare. So you can use most spell and traps pretty safely. Dark Bribe is literally one of the few one card spell negates you can always just plop down IF you draw it. Ergo, in more restricted formats (basically ones that don't have Tears...) you can play some solid games, but as much as people like to sh8t on Duel links cause they can't do 30 minute FTKs in the game (which is somehow more fair than "SKILLZ TO THRILLZ") it's arguably the best way for causal players to enjoy the game. Also the pay to win aspect is BS. I've spent like $30 TOTAL in the 5 years I've played the game. You can get SO many jewels for free just playing PvP regularly. There's NO penalty for losing, so I don't know where they get that foolishness.

Played since PSV, the game has always been like that. If it isn't Tier 0 and costs a month's rent to build, might as well run nothing but normal monsters.

I main Ghoti, so here's the summary: They lack the sheer power of competitive decks, and need to snowball to win. The game is too fast for snowballing to be a solid strategy, but if you're somehow allowed the time to grow you can become a force to be reckoned with to all but the strongest decks. It's a very high end NOT competitive deck, but not competitive nonetheless.

I really like Logs videos but holy shit, ghoti of all the shitty decks out there and being a TCG exclusive deck that really try so hard to make something new and Fresh a failure. For real?
The deck has Flaws but the deck has a solid gameplay, is not clunky, it doesnt brick themselve, have a good amount of starters, a massive and easy removal, good synchro options and non fish synchro option.
The deck is a solid deck and have many strategies and plays around many things but YGO is a game about not letting people play and be One-sided thats why a deck that lacks of any form of prevent your opp to play the game is a failure eventhough you wipe and banish all the board, if you let your opp have a turn u fail.

This is kinda controversial, Ghoti to my knowledge has exactly 4 tournament tops, all of them though are only regional tournaments and none of the decks are pure Ghoti (mostly runick variants). It can be considered failed in the understanding of failing to reach its full potential. Its a fun deck that lacks in speed and needs to much set up for to little pay off, that could've been more meta relevant if it got a little more support.

    • @drewbabe
      @drewbabe 2 месяца назад

Yeah I think people calling this deck kind-of a failure would be justified since half the cards are in fact garbage (I have ONLY seen near-pure Ghoti work in synchro events in MD where the banlist was heavy-handed enough to make it so you couldn't play full-power meta synchro decks, and also couldn't play Runick Ghoti or Superfishy Samurai.) But the main deck level 2s, Snopios, and the synchros (besides Guoglim lol) are legitimately good cards, arguably so is Psiics but I haven't played TCG format enough to test it out fully. Ghoti is rogue playable as an engine when paired with something else, but overall yeah pretty middling. Then again, Superheavy Samurai, when taken as a whole, is mostly made of bad cards, but the new support was so broken it needed multiple hits on the F/L list. So one could almost argue that archetype is a failure if you ignore a chunk of its cards and the fact that it's used more as an engine... same with Ghoti.

Ghoti is suppose to make fun of how illogical the English language is. Now, the English Language is very dumb, but GHOTI is probably the most nonsensical way to go about proving it. It totally overlooks regional accents and I think that's why so many people still don't get it even after it's been explained. Silent Letters, Words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings depending on context, those are good examples that don't need nonsensical examples made up. Regional Accents are not. Every single language has them and there aint really anything to stop it from happening.
In the case of Ghoti each letter is suppose to represent something, but the GH are the only ones that have any real legs. You're suppose to pronounce the "GH" sound like an "F" sound, but a lot of people don't do that. The more you attempt to explain it to someone who doesn't have that accent, the less sense the whole thing makes. the GH is suppose to sound like Rough, but Rough doesn't sound anything like Fish.

The Ghoti actually has cards with effects that do things and have an iota of interesting effects to go over. They have strengths that can be highlighted. They have weaknesses that can be delved into. They have a direction that they can be pushed towards if given new cards. The closest thing that AoJ really had going for them is a synchro monster that was good in every other synchro deck.
An AoJ "failed archetypes" video wouldn't even get past Flamvell in it's length. Rata's video going to 19 minutes is due to his video structure and isn't indicative of much. I know I said 5 minutes originally, that was intentional hyperbole to emphasize how nothing AoJ actually is.

a macro would be toxic, we don't need fish-rise heart. plus that would make using ASS Dragon with it harder. honestly we just need better fish synchros to go into, there's only one playable one besides the Ghotis (White Aura Whale; none of the other White Aura synchros are worth the ED space IMO.) it's nice that it synergizes well with Chengying and that it can make Icejade Gymr easily, but neither of them are fish type so they can't be made with the quick synchro from the main deck tuners. Chengyng you can quick synchro with Hop-Ear Squadron and Gymr you can quick synchro with ASS Dragon and the main deck duners, but what would be nice would be a fish synchro that has an omni negate (Baronne de Fish or Borreload Savage Fish lmao) so the deck has something to go into besides the board wipe, especially since (if you play it right) the Deep Beyond wipe can trigger some on-banish effects and let you make Arianpos or something. Imagine if they had a level 6 or 8 synchro that let you banish a fish from your hand to quick effect omni negate on a SOPT, or just a generic HOPT omni negate on a level 10 fish synchro. That'd make the deck come together, as it would be an extra interaction that wouldn't let you put up a huge board of negates (at least in the TCG where the good generic synchro negates are now banned.)

I like gothis because they are cool space fishes that use the Vanish zone like a pit stop

Ghoti are fun in master duel, love the puzzle play with sharing your opponent's turn. They run well paired with white aura monsters.

Funny how you’re making this video now considering it’s one of the 3 rental decks in the upcoming Master Duel water and wind event.

I love ghoti, but I play the deck like a psycho and use it as an engine to summon earthbound immortal Chacu Challua because it’s funny

I've taken Ghoti to Master V. I wouldn't call it a failed archetype. Just not built to be very meta.

I need to experiment more with them. Currently only using the one that special summons a Fish from the hand to get to Coelacanth faster.
I assume Keaf doesn't banish as cost, and cannot banish itself and another monster while its effect is negated by lets say, Coelacanth?

Ghoti sadly is just too focused on the opponents turn. Not enough of a game plan on your own turn. Could be wrong tho.

Fish Synchro on opponents turn, gymir, accel synchro, chenying and such on yours. Not slow at all

Not on its own, but it does have one. The White Aura stuff can let you make Dragite without sacrificing any Ghoti set-up, and before that, Runick was a good way to get non-tuners while facilitating the Bystials and gaining other interruptions.
Pure Ghoti definitely isn't the strongest, but "failed" is a stretch

I can kind of see why no one would really want to try to make this work outside of having fun, when the alternative is spamming shark, kraken, and jellyfish plays for seemingly better setup for reaction plays.
